Chapter 875:
âIâm not sure when heâll be back,â she said.
That wasnât exactly the truth.
Verruckt was in his office, but he was getting ready to leave soon.
After getting Colton settled, Allison left and headed down to the second basement level.
As she walked through the workspace, she quickly spotted Verruckt sitting at his desk.
Even from a distance, Allison could tell something was wrong with him.
His eyes had darkened to a deep red.
He was pressing his temples, as if struggling to keep control.
Allison moved closer. âDo you need a doctor, Mr. Shaw?â
âNo need,â he answered.
Verrucktâs forehead was drenched in cold sweat, and his breathing became heavier.
âThis isnât something regular medicine can fix,â he said.
As he spoke, his tension only grew.

Allison had only asked out of politeness, so she was about to head back to her desk.
âThen Iâll get back to work,â she replied.
Just as she turned to leave, Verruckt grabbed her wrist. His hand was large and warm, and a chill of danger ran down her spine.
Verrucktâs voice was raspy and low. âGo⦠get the candy from the cabinet.â
That was when Allison realized the candy on his desk was all gone.
âAlright, Iâll get it,â she said.
Allison did as she was told, searching through the cabinet behind him.
When she opened the bottom drawer, she found a box of peach-flavored candies.
She paused for a moment as old memories flooded her mind.
But she didnât have time to think about them and quickly placed the box in front of Verruckt.
âHere,â she said.
Verruckt took the box and popped a piece into his mouth. He lowered his head, his face unreadable.
âAt two this afternoon, Iâll head to Eastshade Dock. After that, I wonât need these anymore.â
Once Bill gave him the final antidote, he wouldnât need the peach candies anymore.
That would mark the end of the past.
The isolated lab on the island, and the girl named subject 001, would be nothing but memories now.
