Chapter 939:
âAnd?â he replied, utterly unfazed. He held her hand as they walked forward. âWeâre a couple, arenât we? Besides, a kiss in the daytime isnât the same as at night. Night kisses are something else entirely.â
As he spoke, the sunlight streaming through the glass illuminated his shoulders, highlighting his broad frame and narrow waist. He looked like heâd stepped out of a paintingâeffortlessly captivating.
Allison squeezed his hand in mock protest. âKellan, youâre deliberately teasing me.â
âCaught me red-handed,â he replied, his grin widening.
Still holding hands, they made their way to board the plane. Before long, the engines roared to life, and the plane lifted off.
Kellan flipped open a newspaper, scanning the headlines with a casual air. âAllison, thereâs an article here about Bill and the research institute.â
Hearing that, Allison leaned closer, her eyes skimming the bold type. âSo there is.â
The front page screamed of scandal â a research institute fire and the assassination of Mayor Bill Onett.
âThe military disclosed that inhumane human experiments were conducted behind the scenes, with Bill as the mastermind behind itâ¦â
Allison skimmed through it. One by one, the rich and powerful involved in human trafficking had been named and shamed, their crimes dragged into the harsh light of public scrutiny.

On the back page, the upcoming mayoral election took center stage.
Kellan tapped the paper lightly. âMrs. Blakeâs husband will likely take office if everything goes as expected. Heâs got the spine to deal with this mess properly.â
Allison, still absorbed in the report, frowned. âItâs interesting how this article focuses entirely on the experiments and Josh, but skirts around the real reasons behind the mayorâs assassination and the research institute explosion. It almost seems to greatly reduce the chances of us being discovered.â Not a single word or image hinted at her involvement.
She turned to Kellan, suspicion clouding her gaze. âDid you have a hand in this?â
Kellan leaned back. âNot entirely. Ferdinand pulled some strings, too. Heâs the worldâs largest advertiser, after all. His team ensured that this version of the story makes the rounds globally.â
Allisonâs lips quirked in a faint smile as she folded the newspaper. âI shouldâve known. Heâs thorough, Iâll give him that.â She remembered how Ferdinand had covered their tracks back on Burned Islands. âThank him for me, will you?â
âIâll pass on the message,â Kellan said, setting the paper aside. Something else seemed to cross his mind, and he added, âBy the way, Ferdinandâs been spending a lot of time with your friend lately, the lady from the Green family.â
âRebecca?â Allison asked, tilting her head.
Sheâd deliberately kept Rebecca in the dark about her time in Vrining, not wanting to burden her friend with unnecessary worry.
