Chapter 979:
A woman with messy curly hair and smudged makeup stepped up next to him. âYeah, stop bothering us! Youâre being ridiculous,â she added, glaring at them.
Allison turned to face them.
The man and woman stood just a few feet away, their faces full of hostility. It was clear that they were Amyaâs parents â the same couple the old neighbor had warned her about.
âIâm Amyaâs boss,â Allison said, her tone calm. âDo you know where she is?â
The couple exchanged a suspicious look.
âHow would we know?â they replied.
Mindy Hayes, the woman, pouted and ran her fingers through her hair. Her guilty look gave her away. She clearly didnât want anyone knowing what had happened to her daughter.
âIf youâre her boss, why arenât you looking for her in Ontdale? That useless girl hasnât been here,â she said, brushing them off.
Troy Hayes, the man, waved his hand in annoyance.
âI may be her father, but that girlâs been nothing but trouble since she was little. If sheâs in some mess, thatâs on her, not us.â At first, he thought they might be from Shadow Nine. But when Allison said she was Amyaâs boss, Troy quickly assumed his daughter had gotten into some kind of trouble.
Mindy reached forward, pushing Allison aside. âMove out of the way! If she owes you money, thatâs your problem, not ours. I always knew she was good for nothing! Such a worthless girl doesnât belong to our family!â

Allison had already seen Mindyâs move coming and stepped back just in time. Mindy missed, tripping forward and hitting the ground with a loud âOuch!â
She quickly scrambled to her feet, covered in mud, and glared, ready to yell. âDid you do that on purposeââ
Before she could finish, she stopped, taken aback by the sharp, cold look in Allisonâs eyes.
âAmya is not worthless,â Allison said firmly, locking eyes with her. âYou two, as her parents, are the real trash.â
In that moment, Allison finally understood why Amya had been so shy when they first met. The girl had lived in a cramped, filthy apartment, hiding from the world.
Amya was clearly brilliant with computers, but she had been suffocated by parents like these.
âYou!â Mindy screamed, her face burning with anger.
Troy, just as furious, snapped, âAre you here just to stir up trouble?â Meanwhile, a group of people came running toward them, with the village leader at the front.
He wore casual slacks and looked to be in his thirties, but his face was set in an expression of polite caution.
âExcuse me, is that black Maybach parked outside yours?â he asked, sizing up Allison and Kellan.
