Chapter 20
Sickly? Husband's Contractual Wife
Chapter 20
To find the one who wanted to kill Amoide and put all the blame on Selena, I needed to suspect everyone around him. Even under Raymondâs meticulous medical care, someone managed to kill him.
It was clearly a premeditated murder by using poison. Whether in the west or east, poisoning was the surest and most secretive way to kill an enemy. To poison Amoideâs food or medicine, the perpetrator had to be among the closest people to him and was able to gain Camillaâs trust. Someone who wouldnât be suspected even when doing something suspicious. And⦠It was Raymond who fitted all those criteria.
He knew Amoide from a very young age. He also had the most crucial information about Amoideâs health. How the illness first occurred, the signs and symptoms of his illness, and ways to alleviate the symptoms. Everything.
âRaymond can kill Amoide without being suspected.â Of course, it was possible that I could be wrong about Raymond. Nonetheless, I couldnât just rule him out from the list of suspected people. I did feel a little guilty for doubting him. Whenever Amoideâs condition worsened or collapsed, he would rush to this mansion immediately, and he would go home only after Amoideâs condition improved.
At that moment, Raymond looked up, as if he felt my persistent gaze. I quickly turned my head in another direction.
Raymond put down his stethoscope and said, âMiladyâs condition is good and healthy. That day, Milady must have been so surprised and anxious. I think Milady lost consciousness due to prolonged exhaustion. Iâll prescribe some medicine to recover Miladyâs energy.â
âIâm really fine now.â
âNot only the husband, but the wife must also take care of her health.â Raymond advised me in a warm tone.
âI know, so we can have a healthy successor.â
Listening to my words, Raymond added, âItâs not necessarily just for that.â
âYou know about my health well. You even examined my health before I got married to make sure that my body is in the best condition for conception.â
âThatâsâ¦â Raymond smiled with a troubled look.
âItâs okay. I understand that you did it because of motherâs order. I donât blame Raymond. Iâm rather grateful.â
âPlease donât mention it.â
âRaymond is such a meticulous person. You have a strong sense of duty, and youâre always so kind.â I showered him with all kinds of praises that came across my mind.
Feeling a little embarrassed, Raymond awkwardly cleared his throat and laughed. âIâm flattered.â
âYou deserve it.â I checked his expression and got to the point. âThank you for coming just in time. Actually, I was wanting to meet you personally to ask for your help in an urgent matter.â
âUrgent matterâ¦?â
âYes, itâs very urgent.â I lowered my voice.
Raymondâs expression changed noticeably when he saw my serious look. âDoes Milady feel uncomfortable somewhere?â
I took a moment to answer his question. âIâm not sure whether itâs a problem or not.â
Raymond opened his eyes wide in embarrassment at my answer. âOh my God, I must have missed something. May I examine Milady again?â He hurriedly opened his medical bag again.
I waved my hand, trying to stop him. âNo, itâs not about meâ¦â
His hands stopped from trying to open the medical bag. Raymond turned to me and waited for my next sentence.
âItâs about my husband, Raymond.â
âMilady meansâ¦His Grace?â
âYes.â I looked at him with a serious face.
âOh, I was so surprised. So, itâs about His Grace.â Raymond sighed deeply, trying to calm himself.
âItâs actually related to my husbandâs health. Itâs so urgent that I need your help. Soâ¦â I dragged my words as my fingers fiddled with the teacup handle. âIâd like to know more about Amoideâs illness.â I looked at his expression and continued, âIs there something that I should know as his wife? Such as the fatal flaw of my husbandâs body?â
âThere is no such thing.â He answered instantly, as if it was an automated response. âMilady has been in good condition except for losing consciousness last time. If thatâs what Milady has been worried aboutâ¦â Raymond seemed a little embarrassed.
âRaymond, Iâd like to know what kind of medicine you prescribe for my husband. As well as the medical treatments you did on him.â I spoke in an earnest tone.
âMay I know why Milady suddenly wants to know about these?â
Once again, I twiddled my fingers with the teacup handle. âIâve been too indifferent toward my husband.â
ââ¦â
âWhenever he got sick, I could only cry beside him. I couldnât do anything to help him at all.â I picked up my handkerchief, pretending to wipe my tears, and furtively glanced at his face. As expected, he looked troubled. I could see wrinkles around his brows.
âIs it hard for you to talk about Amoideâs real condition?â
It seemed like Raymond was instructed to confide about Amoideâs condition only to Camilla. Thus, he was a bit troubled due to my sudden request.
âI have to find a way to get his help naturally, without any suspicions. By any means.â So, I decided to use another method. With a desperate look, I said, âRaymond, actuallyâ¦itâs really hard for me to tell you about thisâ¦â
Looking at my eyes, he took a moment to think and spoke carefully, âIs Milady worried that it would be difficult to conceive the baby due to His Graceâs condition?â
âRaymondâ¦â With a pitiful look, I covered my mouth with my handkerchief. Although it was just an act, the embarrassment I felt was real. âItâs really hard, Raymond.â I lowered my eyes with a deep sigh. âAmoideâ¦now, he isnât like how he used to be.â
âIsnât like how His Grace used to beâ¦?â Instead of trying to pry further, he just observed my countenance. It seemed like he understood the hidden meaning behind my words.
âDidnât you already hear about this from mother?â
ââ¦Hear about what?â
âI thought she already told you since it is a serious matterâ¦â I blinked my eyes innocently.
âPardon me, Your Grace. I really donât know what Your Grace is referring toâ¦â Raymond said in a strangely quivering voice.
âItâs a private problem of a married couple, so I donât think I should talk about it in detailâ¦â
âPrivate problemâ¦â Raymond, who engrossed in trying to decipher my indirect words, suddenly bowed his head. It seemed that he managed to figure out what I was trying to say. âIâm sorry, Your Grace. I was overconfident with my skill.â
âNo, it isnât groundless confidence. Your medical skill is definitely the best in the capital, Raymond.â I eagerly praised him and waited for his next words.
âWellâ¦H-his Graceâsâ¦â
I could see Raymondâs ears turning red. âAlright, weâre almost there.â I held the teacup with both hands. As the warmth from the tea transmitted to my palms, my nervousness faded and I felt a sense of relief.
âAs a doctor, I had been too complacent with my duty. I should have listened to Your Graceâs words more carefullyâ¦â
âItâs not your fault. I was also reluctant to tell you about this since itâs a private matter of a married couple.â
âYour Grace doesnât have to do so. Your Grace could tell me anything. Anytime.â
âThat makes me feel a little less burdened.â I covered my flushed face. âSo Raymond, you have to tell me everything. This is something we all have to go through.â
âOf course.â
âSo, speaking of whichâ¦â
âYes, please tell meâ¦â
âWellâ¦Medicine and treatment are important to boost Amoideâs stamina, but most of all, shouldnât he eat nutritious food as well?â
âYes, Your Grace is right.â
âThough sometimes when I see my husband eat, I donât think the food is good enough to boost his stamina.â I said as I recalled the type of food served for Amoide. I didnât eat with him all the time, but I knew what he usually ate because I always saw his meals being transported on the food trolley. To put it simply, all his food was grass. I always thought that the main reason behind his cranky personality was because he ate a lot of grass.
âHmmâ¦Your Grace meansâ¦â
âI want to change my husbandâs diet. Can you help me?â
Raymond nodded his head at my careful request. âHis Grace had been served with a limited type of food to prevent any possible outbreak, butâ¦Your Grace has a point. It would be good to change His Graceâs diet a little bit.â
âThen, Iâll talk to the chef and decide on the menu.â
âI will help as much as I can.â
âIâm so relieved that youâre willing to help me. Letâs do our best to make sure this family gets a healthy successor soon.â I saw Raymond off with a smile. Shortly after he left, I lifted the bell next to me and shook it lightly.
The door opened immediately, and Rona came inside. âDid you call me, Milady?â
âRona, go and ask the chef to bring the records of Amoideâs meals from the past month. Including the recipes for all the food, too.â
âT-the chef?â Rona asked with a slightly frightened face.
âYeah. Why?â
âThe chef is a bitâ¦â For some reason, she hesitated to answer.
âRona?â
âNo, it is nothing. I understand.â Rona quickly nodded, as if she made a big decision. Her expression looked determined, like a warrior who was about to go to war. Looking at her reaction, I beckoned her and stopped her from leaving the room.
âRona, I donât know why, but you looked very scared.â
âNo, I am not.â
âBut why is your face sweating?â
âPardon?â Rona hurriedly wiped off the sweat on her face with her sleeve.
âWhatâs going on?â For a moment, it felt like I had given her a very difficult task. I looked at Ronaâs expression for a moment and pulled myself up. âCome with me.â
