Chapter 34
Sickly? Husband's Contractual Wife
Chapter 34
While contemplating the dilemma before me, I grabbed the hem of my dress as if it were a dry mop.
âWell, it must be a difficult request?â Walter said, whispering with a serious expression on his face.
âYes, itâs difficult, butâ¦â
I, too, murmured with a heavy sigh.
Walterâs expression became heavier. I couldnât decipher what he was thinking, so I felt nervous for a moment.
âWhy⦠What are you thinking?â
âHm⦠You look fine on the surface, but maybe itâs thatâ¦?â
âThatâ¦?â
âItâs the sickness that makes that part where you sit on terribly uncomfortable.â
âThe part⦠where you sit on..?â
I couldnât understand what he was saying, but I suddenly shouted.
ââ¦What?!â
âItâs all right, you wonât even need this much medicine for it. Ah, but donât be stingy with the application, just put on a lot. Though if itâs gotten serious already, then you should see a doctor, even if youâre embarrassed. Any illness is nothing to be ashamed ofâ¦â
âI-Itâs not like that at all!â
ââ¦It isnât?â
Walter, who had excitedly taken out a new kind of medicine from his medicine cabinet, put back down the bottle in his hand, sullen.
âIâve never guessed wrongâ¦â
âItâs for someone else, not me.â
âOh? Itâs someone elseâs sickness? Has it gotten out of hand? If so, then just medicine wonât suffice anymore.â
âI told you, itâs not like that!â
At my words, he stroked his beard and took a sip from the bottle that was next to him.
âBefore you lecture meââ
He held up the bottle with clear amber liquid inside. âItâs a concoction of herbs.â
Without anyone asking him directly, Walter answered me first, as though he sensed what I was about to say.
âYour wife has succeeded in making you give up drinking, I see.â
âOf course. This is just herbal juice.â
ââ¦All right.â
I nodded half-heartedly.
âSo, whatâs wrong with that person?â Walter asked, returning back to the subject at hand.
I finally made up my mind and brought up the issue.
âWalter, please take a look at this medicine.â
âMedicine? What medicine?â
When he asked, I opened my pocket and handed over a bottle with round pills inside it.
âThis.â
Walter adjusted his glasses and inspected them closely. He opened his mouth again. âItâs a pill. Do you want me to find out whatâs in them?â
âYes, I actually have the prescription,â I said, then gave that to him as well.
âOhâ¦?â
Walterâs eyes glistened as he gazed at the piece of paper.
âYouâre asking me to analyze the medicine even though you already have the prescription? How interesting. Really interesting.â
âWhat?â
Walter had an interested look on his face.
âIf you want me to analyze this even though you have the ingredients listed down, then that means you donât trust the person who made it. Isnât that the case?â
I averted my gaze.
âItâs not to that degreeâ¦â
âBut, youâre suspicious of the medicine. Am I right?â
I couldnât bring myself to be honest with him, even though he kept insisting. âI just want to make sure. To double-check.â
âYes, sure. If you say so.â
Walter opened the bottle, sniffed, then placed a few on his palm. He smelled them a few times again, picked some out then popped them into his mouth.
âWalter, waitââ
To my surprise, I reached out to him, afraid that the effects might be different if someone other than Amoide took them.
âHmm⦠Thisâ¦Yeah, it isâ¦â
With his eyes closed, Walter chewed on the pills for a long time.
ââ¦.â
Then, his eyes turned serious. âSelena. Whoâs taking this medicine?â
He hurriedly spat out the pill in his mouth.
ââ¦.â
I shut my mouth like a clam again.
âI donât know who it is, though it seems like theyâre important to you?â
ââ¦Yes.â
âYou want them to live?â
âOf course.â
I could feel Walterâs expression dimming.
âW-whatâs the matterâ¦?â
âNo, no. Continue. What are that personâs symptoms?â
âHe suddenly collapses without any reason, but sometimes it seems like heâs too healthy.â
âHeâs doing fine?â
âYes. Heâs strong.â
As I stared at the bandage on my hand, I also remembered him crushing the snakeâs head.
âWhat kind of strength?â
âJust⦠normal strength.â
The memory of Amoide lifting me in his arms made my face somewhat hot. I brushed a lock of hair behind my ear to forget how he looked without clothes onâand diligently came up with another memory.
[ Get lost. ]
âAnd, heâs got a terrible personality.â
âPersonality?â
âYes, heâs always in a sour mood. I think itâs been that way even before he got sick.â
This was just a guess, though.
âWell, itâs possible for a man to have extraordinary strength. Although Iâm a pharmacist, not a doctor.â
âPeople who come here regularly donât think that way.â
Anywhere you went, the treatment from a formally trained doctor would be expensive. However, since Walter was competent enough to concoct medicine that was as good as that kind of treatment and better yet with a relatively low cost, of course, people would flock to his pharmacy.
âAnyway, heâs sick, but Iâm just wondering if thereâs another reason for it.â
âAnother reason?â
âFrom thisâ¦â
âYou think thereâs something in the medicine?â
I nodded my head vigorously.
âWhat if itâs poison and not medicine?â
Hearing my claim, Walter opened up the paper with the prescription on it and read it again.
âI know that the prescription itself, it⦠looks normal enough,â I said.
âThe medicine and the prescription match perfectly, Selena.â
âThen, that meansâ¦â
âThereâs no problem with the prescription. Neither with the medicine.â
âReally?â
âIf there were traces of poison in this medicine, then wouldnât the one taking it be dead already?â
âBut, that would be too obviousâ¦â
âItâs obvious if you die at once.â
âYes, stillâ¦other peopleâs stories arenât always pleasant. Thereâs this sayingâcomedy at a distance, but a tragedy from up close.â
If it was someone elseâs story, then I can just enjoy watching with my arms crossed. Unfortunately, this was my story, so I couldnât just stand by and do nothing.
In fact, it might be all too simple to approach the matter.
âAs long as I donât kill my husband.â
The reason Selena faced such a cruel demise was because she poisoned her husband. So, all I needed to do was not do that.
Right now, I had no reason to poison him because I knew how the narrative went. It would be simple. If heâs happy, then Iâm happy. Letâs all be happy. That way, we can all have a happy ending that way.
Regardless,
Thereâs no way everything would be that easy.
ââ¦.â
Amoide was already ill, and heâs set to die young.
At that time, his wife, who would be next to him, might still be unfortunately involved and falsely accused of murder. Or, there was still a possibility that someone would assassinate him under the guise of his illness, then lay the blame on me.
Either way, it wouldnât change. My death was inevitable at this point.
So, at all costs, Amoide needed to live.
âBy the way, didnât you say that the person taking this is precious to you?â
ââ¦An important person.â
I barely remembered to correct him. There might not be much difference on the surface, but there was a subtle difference between the two words. No, theyâre totally different.
âAnyway, you want that person to live, donât you?â
ââ¦He must live.â
Because if he does, then I can continue living as well.
âThen, itâs going to be difficult.â
âWhat will be difficult?â
âThis medicine.â
âYou said itâs made exactly according to the prescription?â
âYes. Painkillers are commonly prescribed for neuro stabilization and pain reduction.â
ââ¦Of course.â
That meant this medicine wasnât for essential treatment.
âItâs a prescription drug for patients who suffer from extreme pain. Itâs a very potent formulation.â
âHe does look especially in pain whenever he collapses.â
âWell⦠Itâs a prescription for a person who has only a few days left to live. The purpose is to reduce their pain so they can pass on peacefully.â
For a moment, the strength in my legs that kept me up wavered.
âAre you all right?â
âYesâ¦Iâm fine.â
I stumbled and grabbed the edge of a desk. I slowly opened my trembling mouth. âThen, is there no hope anymore since heâs taking this medicine?â
âI donât think so.â
âWill there be any difference if I try to stop it?â
âIâm not sure.â
âI mean⦠Heâs been very, very healthy lately. I feel like heâs being more energetic, and heâs had a better complexion nowadays. Is there still no hope?â
I grabbed Walterâs arm tightly.
âSelena⦠Wellâ¦â
Walter seemed to be surprised by my sudden onslaught of questions.
âEven I knowâ¦â
â¦I knew that Walter wouldnât have the answers I wanted. Nevertheless, I couldnât stop clinging onto hope.
âThe doctor who takes care of the patient would know his constitution the best.â
ââ¦Yes.â
There was nothing wrong with the medicine. That was clear.
His body was in a really bad shape. He might be holding out this long only because he was already exceptionally strong before he fell ill.
âI understand. Thank you.â
I gently let go of Walterâs arm.
Even though I had already confirmed what the ingredients of that medicine were, I felt even more frustrated.
Trapped in a complex maze, I managed to find a single ray of light from a miniscule opening.
However, it wasnât an exit, so the despair that flooded my senses was far greater.
