Chapter 22// "I never said you were a handsome sex God"
We all have that one class that bores us to death, the class that just drones on and on, but it's a class that you just can't drop. Well that is AP History for me, the bane of my existence.
Currently I am leaning against my arm and I'm slowly slipping in to a deep slumber. That feeling when you're physically forcing your eyes to stay open, then all of a sudden you're told to write 2 pages of notes in under 5 minutes. It's impossible because you're unable to keep your eyes open long enough to even look at the projector board. It's like lifting your head up is the most painful task possible.
My teacher is droning on about our American history, maybe if I just close my eyes for a few seconds... Someone kicks the back of my chair and I sit up straight.
I turn around to glare at him; already knowing exactly who it is. His brown eyes gaze at me while he smiles. Well at least he's wide-awake because the rest of the class look half-dead.
"Look alive sis"
"Fuck of Daniel" I mutter.
"Can you get Elliott?" He asks.
I look at Elliott who's sitting in front of me. His head is placed on his arm and his eyes are closed. His dark brown hair, which looks unusually light due to our bright school lights, is flopped to the side slightly.
I kick him from under the table "What did I miss, I swear I wasn't asleep, and I swear I didn't sleep with her!" He blurts out in shock which makes me silently laugh.
"Daniel wants to ask you something" I casually shrug.
"Bitch" Elliott mouths. " I know" I mouth back.
I hear a soft sound. A sound that makes your head whip from side to side in fear.
A light buzzing sound. It's faint but it's still there. What's it doing here in the end of February?
That's when I catch a glimpse of the creature hugging on to the light.
Everybody's eyes are on it, some girls are actually squealing. Do they not realize that that attracts wasps?
It slowly comes down towards our table; I sit morbidly still, only my eyes moving to follow the wasp.
But what I'm not expecting is the scream I hear, it's a very masculine scream.
I glance over to see Elliott clutching on to Aidan for dear life. Actually everyone is looking at Elliott.
"MISS" Elliott screams absolutely terrified of the tiny creature.
As the wasp gets closer to him, his chair topples backwards sending him with it. Some how Aidan is able to balance his chair without having Elliott make him fall too.
The wasp decides to go behind me and Daniel jumps up off his chair.
I just sit there laughing to a point where I am unable to breathe.
Daniel is waving his hands in the air, I think that's what causes the tiny thing to flutter back up to the bright light.
Everyone silently looks at Elliott and Daniel who are pale faced and almost shivering. Of course Aidan and I only know why.
Elliott picks up his chair and slowly sits on it as opposed to Daniel who doesn't even attempt to go back to his chair. He just silently sits on the floor next to Elliott, clutching on to him like Scooby would hold on to shaggy.
"Well...then" Our teacher says, she's completely speechless.
That's when the wasp decides to make a reappearance and it slowly floats down. One of the bimbo's points towards it, then goes on to hiding her head in the shoulder of the boy next to her.
"MISS!" Elliott screams again in absolute fear, he looks at her like she is going to be his knight in shining armour and save him from a simple wasp.
Theoretically it's girls that are scared of wasps. Girls that are prissy perfect, they squeal and run in to a boy's arms. As the male stands tall and strong and defends the girl from the tiny creature. Theoretically.
As the wasp floats around Elliott and Daniel, they clutch on to each other. It lands on the desk in front of me and I sit frozen.
That's when I think Daniel loses it and practically jumps over Aidan who is calmly sitting on his chair, without a moment to spare a horrified Elliott follows in sync clambering on top of Aidan and nearly falling to the floor in the process. The class just looks outside the door to see them both red faced, no one is even thinking of the wasp that isn't buzzing around anymore.
Aidan and I begin screaming with laughter.
*Flashback to 10 years ago*
"I wouldn't do that if I were you" I warn them shaking my pigtails as I swing from a high up branch. I kick my legs backwards and forwards in my light summer school dress.
"Shut up stupid Cress" The 8 year old Elliott replies like it's the most offensive comeback ever.
"You two are so silly, playing with a bee's home" I sigh.
"Be quite or I'll throw it at you Dawson"
I don't understand why he calls me Dawson, that's not my name and its not like he calls Daniel Dawson even though he has the same second name as me.
"Elliott!" Daniel warns. His hair is a shaggy mess falling over his face and his shirt is untucked which makes him look even scruffier.
I roll my eyes at Elliott.
Elliott is swinging a rather large stick around; while Daniel is closely examining the beehive.
I don't think Elliott meant to do what he did, but that doesn't change the fact that he drops the stick directly on top of the beehive.
I sit on the branch in shock, watching the 2 boys running away from a handful of bees to the nearest source of water.
The young Elliott swears in a colorful vocabulary.
Even after a few days of being stung both of them were stuck lying in bed like they had chickenpox. Every time I looked at the stings, I almost gagged.
Now, every time I see a wasp or a bee, I never forget to point it out to my brother and his best friend.
Elliott grabs the handle of the classroom door and aggressively closes it shut so the class is left inside with the wasp. I see Daniel let out a sigh of relief and Elliott starts to gain a bit of colour back in to his face.
A few moments later, the wasp scurries out the class, probably scared by Daniel and Elliott's reaction.
Our teacher  walks over to the closed door, slowly opening it and looks at the two boys who are red in the face.
"Boys am I seeing things, or is the badass Elliott and Daniel really afraid of a tiny wasp."
"Miss I think you need to clean your glasses because that thing was huge" Daniel expresses using his arms to show what he means.
They both nervously walk back in to the room and take their seats.
"Boys, I need to tell you something, see when the both of you begin dating. I would advise you to date in the winter"
"Why is that Miss?" Elliott asks.
"Because Mr. Grayson if you go for a lovely picnic with a beautiful girl, there will most likely be a swarm of wasps around. And the girl will expect you to look out for her, be her knight in shining armour. And you will run away screaming for the tops of the hills, I'm just trying to give you a bit of advise to help save the little dignity you have left"
If Elliott could be anymore embarrassed he would have melted in to a puddle because right now his face is red, a deep a dark shade of red. While Daniel has his head in his hands with humiliation.
"Now back to the lesson, though I expect people will be coming in and out of the class asking what all the screaming was about"
"Elliott..." I gasp pointing behind him placing a scared expression on my face.
"...is there something buzzing behind you"
He instantly jumps up running a hand through his hair, I laugh at his reaction, realisation hits him and he glares at me with his big blue eyes.
"Not funny cress"
"Oh but it's hilarious Elliott"
*
At the beginning of lunch there was a shout out between Aribella and one of her cheerleaders. Something to do with the fact that she wasn't able to lift one of the other girls up. Aribella embarrassed her by exclaiming to the whole school how she shouldn't be on the team, the poor girl was mortified but something that caught my eye was Winter watching the unfolding scene very carefully.
Back in Winter's day she was an amazing cheerleader, probably better than Aribella, but stepped down from the team after the fight between the 3 of us.
Her and Aribella had the exact same argument maybe one hundred times worse before our friendship split apart.
It seemed to almost pain Winter, watching the way Aribella was treating the unlucky girl.
A loud crackling sound runs through the school, I immediately know it's the speakers.
"All students and staff must listen carefully" It's the Head teacher's loud voice "The storm outside has become very dangerous and we have been warned to keep students in school until further notice. Electricity has gone out over most of town, and will probably be out here soon"
There's a slight pause.
"But lessons will go on as usual for the rest of today"
Some people stand up in outrage and other scurry up to the window to see the state of the weather outside.
Emily and I silently follow the crowd to our large window.
Outside the cars are shaking and all sorts of things are flying in the air. The sky is dark and the rain is falling from the sky at an unbelievable rate.
"Oh my, I don't mind having to stay in school, look at the state of it out there"
"Yeh but I still can't believe we have to go to class" I sigh.
Lessons do presume as usual but most of the teachers are in a state of panic, well on the bright side thankfully the power hasn't gone out yet.
As the final 10 minutes of class drag on there is another announcement from our Head teacher "All students will meet in their registration classrooms, if students wish to leave the building at they're own risk we cannot be blamed. Students will stay in school over night and all classes tomorrow will be dismissed till the weather calms down. Thank you"
When the bell rings I silently walk to my locker and place most of my books inside. I swing my bag over my shoulder and walk up the stairs towards the history class that we are usually situated in for registration; everyone from my class is pretty much there by the time I arrive.
This is the class that we were assigned to in the first 2 years of high school and it's usually the class where your friendship group is formed. Or that's just the way it is in this school.
This class has always been a bit on the crazy side, it's filled with some of the most popular people in the school, which also includes the biggest bitch that has ever walked on this planet.
The second I enter the class she opens her mouth "Crescent why don't you go take a walk in the storm, maybe then we'll all get rid of you"
I ignore her and walk to the back of the class where Emily is on the phone, probably to her paranoid mother. That's when I remember that my mom is actually at home and I should contact her. I look at my phone, still no signal. I sigh and look around for Daniel, but he's sitting with them. All 6 of them sit there looking like a group of attractive models waiting for a photo shoot.
Well kind of, I mean from what I can see Elliott and Carter are trying to see who can hold there breath the longest and Alec is attempting to wrap his leg around his neck. Daniel is making stupid faces trying to make Elliott and Carter laugh then there's Conner, who's got a ghost of a smile on his face as he watches Alec.
I take a deep breath and make my face expressionless as I walk up to Daniel.
"Look who it is" Aidan pretends to look me up and down.
"Sup Cress" Alec kindly smiles. I just smile back.
"Ha, fuck you bro, I won" Carter punches Elliott on the shoulder. Elliot growls at him, I know he hates losing but he's also looking at me.
"I think we need a rematch, it's Cress's fault I lost" Elliott argues.
I tilt my head questionably "Why is that, Elliott?"
"Dawson, you're so breathtaking that you stole my breath and I had to breathe, therefore causing me to lose against my will"
"Now that is one hot pick up line" Carter laughs.
Daniel is sitting on a desk looking unamused by Elliott's comment, from the corner of my eye I see Aidan look as though he's calculating something important in his head.
I use my thumb to point at him "What's he doing?" I ask Daniel.
"He's trying to come up with the best prank ever, though he's not having much luck"
"Anyway do you have any signal?"
He nods at me.
"Can you call mom and tell her that we're okay?"
"Mom? No chance" He scoffs. All his friends are looking between him and I.
"Don't be immature, she brought us up, the least we can do is tell her we haven't died in the storm"
"Don't be stupid Cress she isn't my mother nor is she yours, she doesn't care about us anyway"
"Don't be silly Daniel, come on give me your phone I'll call her then" I demand bringing my hand forward to take his phone. But he pulls it back.
"Come on let her call her mother" Conner tells Daniel, I give him a thankful smile trying not to blush but Daniel looks even more annoyed.
"Man you don't know anything so keep your opinion to yourself. My mother is dead and I don't need some women pretending to take her place." Daniel snarls at him. This isn't unusual of Daniel he always gets like this when I talk about her.
"Well she matters to me" I say my voice straining, "She's the only family I have other than you"
"She's not blood relation" He replies, people are looking over but they also look bored, it isn't uncommon for Daniel and I to be arguing in class.
"What, blood relation like dad, yeah great help he is in New York sitting on his arse enjoying his life"
"You just never talk to him" Daniel glares back at me. I glance up and see Elliott looking at me he hasn't said anything yet which is very unusual. I force my eyes to look back at Daniel and not in to Elliott's deep ocean eyes.
"She was Mom's best friend and you treat her like shit, what would mom have said"
Daniel looks really angry now but at that exact moment the lights black out. A small scream runs around the room as the class becomes dark. It's still faintly light outside, so it hasn't become pitch black yet.
I turn around not wanting to argue with Daniel anymore, he's such a brick wall.
For a while Emily and I sit on the hard carpet, playing various games, like knots and crosses, would you rather and songs that begin with every letter of the alphabet. Emily and I are practically wrapped on top of each other trying to saviour our body heat. Actually a small group of us have crowded together.
I can't concentrate any longer my stomach is rumbling and I'm freezing. For once I wish we didn't have to wear school uniform. My legs are shaking in my tights and my blazer is tightly wrapped around my body. The temperature is still decreasing at a terrible speed.
People around me are beginning to complain about hunger. I Â remember that I have a big grab bag of Doritos in my locker and a packet of haribos, who knows what else I have thrown in there for a day when I am on my period.
I stand up quickly and walk up to the teacher at the front of the class; he looks like he's ready to jump off the building.
I begin to ask him but he just waves me off. Well I'll just take that as a yes then.
I quietly walk towards the door, people glance at me but I ignore their stares.
I walk out the door and the corridor is freezing. I take a few steps but then a shiver of fear runs down my spine, it's getting darker and darker, even though all the classes are full it's silent.
I almost feel like I'm being watched.
I turn around slightly and I swear I see a pair of green eyes staring at me, a pair of vicious and venomous green eyes that I've never seen before. I blink and the emerald looking eyes are gone.
I open the double doors to the stairs and reach for the banister when I suddenly hear footsteps move behind me.
"Dawson" I turn around, my dark brown hair flipping over my shoulder.
Elliott is standing in front of the double doors. His dark green hoodie is open showing the front of his school shirt. He is looking at me carefully, something about his expression looks rattled.
The wind continues to howl around us and the giant raindrops attack the roof, I can almost see my breath rise in front of my face due to the lack of warmth.
"Your going to your locker, I just thought I would come with you and it's dark and I know you're scared of the dark"
He comes closer to me, taking each step delicately like I'm about to run away from him.
"How do you know where I'm going?" I ask him. I mean I could be going to pee.
"Emily" Is all he replies as he comes to stand extra close to me.
"I was just going to get some food out my locker" This makes him smile, I smile back but I'm still shaking. I don't know if it's due to the cold or the hallucination of green eyes that I saw.
Then he does something I don't expect. He slips his green hoodie of his shoulders and hands it to me.
He's standing there in his school shirt and trousers, looking completely unfazed by the cold.
I gently take it from his hand "What do you want me to do with it, put it in the washing machine for you when I get home" I joke.
"Ha ha very funny Cress, but you look like you're going to die from shivering any second"
I can't really refuse him, and the hoodie looks so cozy that I take it and slip it on under my blazer. Instantly I am hit with his sweet smell of honey and spice.
"You don't look very cold, are you maybe some sort of wolf" I ask him raising my left eyebrow.
"Really Crescent, one minute I'm Edward Cullen, then a wolf and a extremely handsome sex God, What next?"
"I never said you were a handsome sex God"
"But we all know you were thinking it" He winks at me.
