Standing at the doorstep was Major Neha, a fellow officer whom Riya had known for a year. Neha was known for her level-headedness and was often sought after for her advice, but Riya was not very fond of her because she used to indulge in night outs and activities that didn't gel with her disciplined lifestyle."Neha? What brings you here at this hour?" Riya asked, her surprise evident in her voice.Neha's expression was one of concern as she stepped inside Riya's quarters. "Riya, I couldn't help but notice that something has been bothering you lately. You seem troubled, and I wanted to check in on you."Riya didn't want to show her weak side to Neha, so she sternly asked, "I am not sure what you mean; can you be more specific?"Neha smiled, "So there is nothing going on, Riya? Looks like you are burning the midnight oil on tomorrow’s visit then. I thought I would ask, as your lights are generally off by this time. I was passing by and had seen you in a pensive mood earlier at the dining table, hence thought of checking once. But no worries, I will leave you then to your solitude and planning!"Neha's taunt was evident, and Riya could make out that her mood today had become the gossip of the cantonment. Still, she didn't budge and let Neha leave, closing the door and realizing she had been over displaying her emotions since the evening. But immediately there was another knock at the door. Riya thought it might be Neha again but found her buddy, Sonia, instead. Sonia was known for her sharp mind and ability to read people, and she had a reputation for being discreet and trustworthy. Most importantly, Sonia had been Riya’s best friend since her first day in Leh as they were of same age and could talk openly with each other. Though Sonia was Captain Veer’s wife, there was no professional bias between them and even though Veer addressed Riya with respect, for Sonia Riya was her dear friend.Riya now knew her close ones were aware of her tensed mood, and she didn’t ask her any reason but rather let her in.“You have been so disturbed since evening; Veer was telling me you may need some support. Then when I saw your quarter lights are still on, I couldn’t stop myself and thought of stopping over!”Riya appreciated Sonia’s genuine concern, and her emotions threatened to spill over. She couldn't hold back any longer and decided to confide in her."Sonia, you won't believe what's happened. Colonel Dinesh, the one I've always looked up to, has suggested Kaushal for the promotion instead of me. It doesn't make any sense, and he wouldn't give me a straight answer when I asked why."Sonia's brow furrowed as she listened to Riya's story. "That does sound strange, Riya. Colonel Dinesh has always supported you. Have you tried talking to him about it?"Riya nodded, her frustration evident. "Yes, I did. But he didn't offer any satisfactory explanation. He just kept saying that there are reasons beyond merit for these decisions."Sonia sat down, deep in thought. "This doesn't add up. Veer always praises Colonel Dinesh, and he's always been fair and transparent with everyone. There has to be something more to this."Riya sighed, feeling a sense of relief at having someone to share her concerns with. "That's what I think too, Sonia. But I don't know how to get to the bottom of it. I can't let this injustice stand, but I also don't want to jeopardize my career."Sonia offered a reassuring smile. "Riya, we need to gather more information before jumping to conclusions. Let's start by talking to others who might have insight into this situation. It could be a misunderstanding, or there might be a valid reason that we're not aware of."Riya felt a glimmer of hope. She had been so consumed by her frustration and doubts that she hadn't considered seeking input from her fellow officers. "You're right, Sonia. We should gather more information before taking any drastic steps. I appreciate your support in this."Riya was thankful to Sonia for stopping by and talking things over. It was a relief to share her concern with someone, though Sonia was not in the army, her intuitions and suggestions were always precious. She always thought Captain Veer was so lucky to be married to Sonia.Riya decided to team up with Captain Veer, and over the next few days, they should set out to find out more about this decision. Carefully discussing the situation without revealing too much, they should talk to fellow officers who might have insights into the matter. As the official delegate visit was on the next day, she realized it was quite late and better to get some sleep before the long day. Next day, Riya focused on her duties, determined to give her best despite the lingering uncertainty about her future. She knew that her actions and dedication would speak louder than any promotion.During the delegate visit, Riya's unit performed admirably well, earning praise from the visiting officials. Colonel Dinesh commended Riya for her exceptional leadership and performance during the event. It was a moment of validation, a reminder that her dedication and hard work were not in vain. However, the news of Kaushal being promoted was shared during the visit, which once again shattered Riya’s belief. The thought of working under Kaushal, who had shown disdain for her in the past, filled her with apprehension. It seemed like an insurmountable challenge, and Riya couldn't help but feel that something was amiss. As the delegate visit concluded and the visiting officials departed, Riya found herself with a heavy heart. She had given her all, demonstrated her dedication and leadership, yet she felt that her efforts were overshadowed by the perplexing decision to promote Kaushal over her. The injustice gnawed at her, and she knew she had to uncover the truth. That evening, as she sat in her quarters, Captain Veer and Sonia joined her once again. They had been discreetly gathering information from their fellow officers, trying to piece together the puzzle of Colonel Dinesh's decision.Captain Veer began, "Madam Sir, I’ve been talking to some of the officers, and there seems to be a prevailing sense of confusion regarding Colonel Dinesh's choice. Many believe that you were the obvious candidate for the promotion, given your track record."Sonia added, "I also gathered from the officer’s wives, they have heard whispers of some bias within the higher ranks. It's possible that there is some favouritism going on that we're not aware of."Riya nodded, her determination renewed. "I've been thinking the same. It's clear that there's more to this than meets the eye. But how do we get to the bottom of it?"Captain Veer leaned forward, his expression serious. "We need concrete evidence. We should consider discreetly looking into the decision-making process, without drawing too much attention. Perhaps there are documents or conversations that could shed light on the situation."Sonia chimed in, "And we need to find friends within the higher ranks who might be willing to help us navigate this situation. I cannot guarantee but will try to find more, but Riya you shouldn’t feel alone in this, you are very strong, I know, so don’t be emotional, this too shall pass!"Riya felt a surge of gratitude for her friends' unwavering support. "You both have been incredible. I can't let this injustice stand, not just for myself but for all the hardworking officers who deserve recognition based on merit. You are right, yesterday I was very depressed and was draining out but coming days it will be tough for both Kaushal and Colonel Dinesh!"~~~~~
