Chaos erupted in the mess as soldiers and medical personnel rushed to the fallen officers. The soothing melodies of the flute were drowned out by the commotion, and the once-harmonious atmosphere turned into one of panic.
In the hospital wing of the cantonment, Priya and Vayu lay unconscious, connected to various monitors. The medical staff worked tirelessly to stabilize their conditions. The news of the poisoning spread like wildfire, casting a shadow over the cantonment that had barely recovered from the bookstore tragedy.
Kaushal, guilt-ridden and distressed, recounted the conversation with Neha to Col. Sharma. "I should have been more cautious. I failed to protect them."
Col. Sharma responded, "We can't dwell on blame now. We need to find out who's behind this. The poisoning is an attack on the very core of our military family."
In the investigation that followed, it was revealed that the poisoning was a deliberate act aimed at silencing those who had exposed Crimson Dagger, and one of the staff members was involved in this. But before anyone could interrogate him, he was found dead in his staff quarters with a suicide note stating that it was his last attempt to kill Priya and Vayu.
Lieutenant Colonel Riya, though still recovering from the recent events, took charge of the investigation. She addressed a gathering of officers and soldiers, her words laced with determination, "We cannot let fear dictate our actions. The poisoning is an attempt to break us, but we stand united."
As Priya and Vayu gradually regained consciousness in the hospital, the scent of antiseptic and the low hum of medical equipment surrounded them. The unwavering support of their military family was evident as fellow officers visited, expressing concern and offering words of encouragement.
In Col. Sharma's office, Kaushal and Riya gathered to discuss the urgent matter at handâthe message Kaushal had received from Neha regarding possible leads on the Crimson Dagger mastermind. The gravity of the situation hung in the air as they prepared to unravel the mysteries that still lingered.
Neha conferenced in and began to narrate a story that left Col. Sharma, Kaushal and Riya in shock.
"I have been narrowing down on all the intercepts from our cantonment, and it seems the traitor is somewhere in Leh. Surprisingly, there have been encrypted messages sent and received from the Jaisalmer cantonment, which means the culprit is operating in the shadows from there. Then I was able to decrypt one message that had a name on itâa code name, Shadow Serpent. It instructed me to poison the trio, and that's when I called you."
The revelation sent shivers down their spines. The threat, once thought to be dismantled, was still lurking, pulling strings from the shadows.
"We can search for everybody's phone," Kaushal suggested.
"No, no, that will not help, Kaushal!" Neha continued her tone grave.
"The signal is lost now; I think it has been deactivated after the incident. Maybe it was that mess staff who did suicide. But I still think there is someone very close to you who is keeping a tab on all the movements."
Riya, her mind racing, chimed in, "Can it be Khymer? We have been trusting him, but I get a hunch that he may be an operative of Crimson Dagger, trying to distract us."
The possibility hung in the room like a storm cloud. The very person they considered an ally might be the puppeteer orchestrating the chaos.
In the following days, the cantonment got back to normalcy. Khymer, unaware of the suspicions that loomed over him, continued to play the flute, trying to bring moments of calm to a place gripped by tension.
Riya and Kaushal, torn between trust and doubt, decided to discreetly investigate Khymer's background. They delved into his past, reaching out to contacts in Leh to gather information about his life before he arrived at the Jaisalmer cantonment.
Neha, tirelessly working to trace any remnants of Crimson Dagger's digital footprint, discovered an encrypted communication channel that seemed to be active in Leh. It was a lead that could potentially unveil the true identity of the elusive Shadow Serpent.
As the investigation unfolded, Riya and Kaushal found themselves conflicted. Khymer, with his serene demeanour and musical talents, seemed an unlikely suspect. Yet, the evidence pointed in his direction because he had a troubled childhood, as his father a Mess Staff had been subjected to charges of theft and forced to leave. Thus he could have been an easy target of Crimson Daggerâs manipulation. But this evidence was still not strong enough to hold him liable as there were no traces of him in any secret operations or phone calls, urging them to question the very foundation of the case Riya had built.
One evening, in the cantonment's mess, Khymer played the flute as soldiers gathered for a moment of solace. The hauntingly beautiful melody filled the air, momentarily lifting the weight of suspicion that lingered.
Riya and Kaushal, sitting at a corner table, observed Khymer closely. Riya's eyes reflected a mix of emotionsâtrust, doubt, and the burden of responsibility. Kaushal, glancing at Neha, nodded subtly, signalling that they needed more concrete evidence before making any accusations.
Major Arjun, sitting next to Riya looking intrigued, asked, "Who's this Night Flutist everyone's talking about?" Arjun had gone on a leave of ten days when the night flutist story happened.
âThe one you are listening to right now!â Kaushal introduced Khymer and explained how his music had turned the cantonment into a place of tranquillity.
Riya, a glint of suspicion in her eyes, suggested, "Perhaps Khymer's story is mysterious as well."
Priya unaware of Riyaâs suspicion, catching on to the idea, said, "I am happy that I am still alive to celebrate the music and unity."
Major Vayu, still recovering, agreed, "Yes, itâs essential to highlight the positive aspects, especially after two murder attempts. I donât have the mental strength to continue."
Major Arjun, listening to Khymerâs tunes, turned to Riya and said, "This is a beautiful sight. It's like a balm for the soul, especially after the recent incidents."
Kaushal, listening to the conversation, warned, "Our roles are dynamic now; we cannot relax completely. Though Crimson Dagger has been eliminated, donât lower your guards yet."
Priya was light-hearted as she had stopped worrying because she believed if someone was trying to kill her, there was someone who was trying to protect her too. So trying to change the topic, she chimed in, "Speaking of challenges, have you heard the latest gossip?"
Major Vayu, intrigued, asked, "What's going on?"
Priya, with a mischievous grin, replied, "Rumours have it that there's a budding romance in the ranks. Lieutenant Colonel Riya and Major Arjun, care to confirm or deny?"
Riya and Arjun exchanged a knowing glance before Riya chuckled, "Well, I suppose the whispers in the cantonment are not limited to mysterious flutes. Nothing romantic here, but we're good company."
Riya, who had once despised Kaushal, Priya, and Vayu, now were good friends; it was like everything happened for a meaning.
The news was met with cheers and playful teasing from Priya and Major Vayu. Kaushal, observing the light-hearted banter, couldn't help but smile. Everyone in the Jaisalmer cantonment was sure now that Crimson Dagger had no presence there, except Kaushal and Riya, who had strict orders from Col. Sharma, that no one should talk about Crimson Dagger until all evidence corroborated.
But little did they know that the winds of change were once again whispering.
âWe will win in the next mission, Pa!â Major Agni said, sitting in the infirmary, cut the call and hid it.
