Chapter Thirty-Nine
When I wake, I sit up and curl into a ball, crying. I knew today was going to be a hard day, but not this hard. I canât be mad at Stanya, she tried to save my life. The Fates fought dirty, and they won. They went after someone who was nowhere near as trained as I am to be dealing with the Fates. She thought she was saving me, when in reality, they should have asked why were they willing to take my life when I havenât made a deal with them? Iâm devastated that everything I fought so hard for, has been destroyed.
âNat, Iâm so sorry.â Stanya says, reaching for me. âI-I thought they had killed you.â
I wrap my arm around her. âItâs not your fault. You didnât know. They didnât play fair.â
âIt was horrible. They told us you were dead. Gedric has been stuck like that since they told us that. Halthin actually started crying. They were so convincing.â
âI know, they made me watch so I would know when you made the deal. I couldnât let them do that to you. I tried to warn you, but that bastard lied and said it was my magic failing.â
âTheyâre pure evil Nat. They were only using me.â She sobs harder. âI feel disgusting, and horrible, and useless.â
âThatâs what they do,â I say, pulling away from her. She looks at me. âThey used you Stanya, there is no shame in that. Iâm just glad you got out of it alive.â
I glance over at the boys and Gedric is just standing there pale as can be, looking like he might actually vomit this time around. Halthin is giving me looks like heâs unsure what to do.
When my eyes land on him, he finally speaks. âHow are you alive? You were so cold and so pale. Gedric felt your heart stop.â
âHavenât you three learned to spot illusions?â I ask then shake my head. âSorry, they invented them, so that wasnât fair. Itâs still a little sore for me.â
I turn my head to Gedric. Heâs not moving. I look over to Drew, and heâs passed out on the floor. I let out a deep breath from my nose. âHalthin, please get Drew onto the bed so he can lay down. Stanya, help him will you? Iâll see if I can get Gedric to snap out of it. Itâs literally the only thing I can do right now.â
They nod while Stanya is still crying. I turn my legs to get off the bed, making room for Drew. Gently, I touch Gedricâs arm, making his eyes move towards me. âHey big guy, are you doing okay?â
âNat?â He asks, his voice unsure.
I nod, âItâs me, and no I did not die.â
Gedric grabs me into a tight bear hug, making me gasp; but not from the sheer pain that he has caused from my shoulder. âI felt your heart stop. How are you alive?â
âIt was an illusion. They knew I wouldnât give them what they wanted, but they knew Stanya would in order to save me. I couldnât let them take her life in an exchange to bring me back here. I had to make a deal with them.â
He squeezes me tighter, holding me closer to him, but I canât really breathe. âNever do that to me again.â
âIt wasnât my call,â I tell him with my very limited air supply. âGedric, Iâm not going to be able to breathe soon.â
He lets me go, my lungs automatically gasping as I take in air. He looks me over, âWhat deal did you make?â
âI believe my exact words were, âIf Ari is defeated, with not just the Champion, I will bend to you Fates, and follow in servitude. This is for an exchange that if I win, the Servants of the Fates shall be released from your rule.â But they only agreed to Articus, so Iâm hopeful Iâm going to win this one.â
âHow in the name of those moronic Fates, can you look me in the eye and say that? I canât beat Ari alone.â
âMy words were; âIf Ari is defeated with not just the Champion,â meaning not just you. So in other words, if youâre not the only one to work in defeating Ari, then I donât have to serve them.â
I hear a distinct roar as the ground shakes, making us lose our footing. This makes me laugh while the ground shakes under us for a few minutes. âLooks like someone just realized they were tricked.â I look up at the sky and shout, âFairs fair!â
The ground stops shaking in that moment, allowing me to stand back up. âWhat was that?â Halthin demands from me.
âI believe the Fates and I have reached an accord.â I straighten myself. âI hate to think what it is though.â
âWhat do you mean by that?â Stanya asks me, still sniffling.
âI believe it means, game on,â I look over at her and give her a smirk. âIf they get to play dirty, then so do I.â
âNat, no.â Stanya tells me. âYou promised Brin.â
âWhat did she promise?â Halthin asks, giving me an unsure look.
âThat she wouldnât go for her Masteries until her overloads are in control.â Stanya says, looking at me like Iâve snapped.
âWhy is that important?â
âIf she learns to astral project, with her level, she can do what the other Servants have done and enter the Fates Plane and fight them.â
âI already know how to since Brin taught me.â I put my hand on my hip. âArticus nearly succeeded more than twice in his attempts. I can finish them.â I tell her.
âWith that arm?â Stanya demands. âAnd he only had to fight three of the Servants. You have five, and one of them is Articus.â
I smirk, âI know.â
âThen youâre either insane, or stupid. You canât maintain the necessary concentration to astral project that long, with the amount of pain it will put on your body. Unless youâre a sadist like Articus,â Stanya folds her arms.
âOr Iâm angry enough that I just donât care.â
âEither way, that will put you straight into an overload, so youâre forced to wait until youâre finally recovered. That gives me one month to talk you out of that asinine plan.â
I roll my eyes, but she has a point. Iâd die before I even left my body. âEither way, my greatest weakness will become my asset when Iâm in that realm.â
âWhy is that?â
âBecause overload doesnât apply to me in that plane.â
âBut is sure as night applies to your body,â Stanya hisses.
âWhich is why you pull me out of it right when itâs about to hit.â
âYouâre mental,â she screams at me, taking me by surprise. âI just nearly lost you again Nat, Iâm not going to let you go that easily next time. If I have the chance to stop you, I will.â
âStanya, theyâre trying to kill me,â I tell her. âRight now, fighting back is my only chance.â
âThen whatâs stopping them now?â She yells. âWhy havenât they forced you into an overload? You made that blasted deal with them. They got their way. Youâre going to serve them.â
âBecause until I can fight Ari, that deal isnât valid.â I go and I touch her arm, giving her a sincere look. âStanya, this is not something I can avoid by simply hiding my face. This is coming for us whether I like it or not.â
âBut why you?â She demands, tears in her eyes.
I sigh and gently pull a small drop of her magic and touch her head, like I have done hundreds of times before, and play what happened to her in her mind. Stanya eyes widen while the scene plays and I watch her flinch, knowing what part she has gotten to.
When Stanya eyes focus, she gives me a helpless look. âHe was so angry.â
âAnd mean,â I say, agreeing with her. âDo you see what I mean? I canât hide from this.â
âNo, we canât hide from this.â She takes my hand. âIf you pick a fight with one of us, you get both. Remember that.â
I nod and hug her quickly before letting go. âAlways.â I look over to Gedric and Halthin. âCan you stand spending another battle with me?â
The men both nod and grin. Gedric gives me a pointed look though. âSo when do we get to learn about Ari?â
I smack my forehead. âI totally forgot about that. How about tomorrow night? Weâve already had a pretty rough day.â
âDeal,â Stanya says quickly. âNow how long is Drew going to be out?â
I cock my head as I look at him. âNot sure. Iâve never been taken by a Fate before.â I look at Gedric. âWhat do you think? Youâve been taken by a Servant.â
Gedric folds his arms as he shakes his head. âItâs going to be awhile.â
âNow do we want to leave Nat alone, in case the Fates try to off her early?â Stanya asks, looking at me.
I roll my eyes. âGood luck with that.â
âWhat if you donât make it to your battle with Ari?â
âThen the terms of the deal was never reached, so itâll be pointless to kill me now.â
âSo whatâs the plan then?â
âTrain the boys, and you. Also research. We have yet to do that.â
âAs long as someone doesnât get angry, I think weâll manage to get out and look at it.â Stanya purses her lips. âStill, I donât want to leave you alone. I donât trust the Fates after what I just saw.â
âSo are you moving into my room, or am I moving in with you?â I ask her, deciding to give into this battle. I know I wonât win this one.
âI was thinking Gedric moves in with you.â She grins, amused by my faint blush,
âWhat?â Gedric and I demand together.
âGet two beds, and a partition, and youâll be fine.â She says, waving me off. âItâs literally the only way Iâm going to be content with this. Gedric is the only one that can handle your overloads. Drew can, but I doubt his wife will be thrilled with having a female roommate.â
âNo, she wouldnât.â A sweet voice says, interrupting our conversation. âNow what happened to my husband?â I turn to see a woman with Gedricâs sandy waves, her hazel eyes also match his. Itâs surprising how much of a striking resemblance he shares with his mother. Sheâs about as tall as Stanya, maybe a hair taller.
âHe was taken over by a Fate,â Gedric says, going to her. âHeâll be alright Mother.â
âWhy was he taken over by a Fate?â
Everyone looks at me, but Gedric is the one to answer. âBecause the Fates wanted to strike a deal with Stanya to give Natasha back after they kidnapped her.â
I slightly nod my head at that. Thatâs actually a pretty fair description to what happened.
Gedric continues. âOnly they were just using her to get Nat to make a deal with them, since they want Nat as a Servant.â
âIâm sorry, what was that?â Angela says, looking either confused or staggard, I donât know.
âWe better go put Natasha to bed,â Stanya says quickly. âSheâs been through a lot today.â
Stanya grabs my arm and starts to pull me away. âFreeze!â She tells us, making us stop in mid step. Sheâs technically not our parent, but her tone is enough to make us feel like weâre in trouble.
âTurn.â We reluctantly turn around, and I see Gedric smirking behind her. She smiles at me. âI take it youâre Natasha.â
I nod and extend my hand. âYou must be Angela.â After she shakes my hand and lets go, I speak. âDrew mentioned youâd like to meet.â
She nods as she looks me over. âServant of the Fates, huh?â
I smirk, âThereâs a bet Iâd have to lose first, and I donât plan on losing.â
Her eyes narrow. âYouâve made a deal with them?â
âIt was that, or let them kill Stanya,â I say shrugging.
âSo you saved your friend?â
âNo, I saved my sister.â I say, remaining firm against the implications her tone implies. âHer life is worth this cost to me. Even if I end up in eternal Servitude with those despicable beings.â
She looks me over. âI can see why my son likes you so much.â
âMom!â Gedric yells while I blush, a bit unprepared for that response.
âExcuse me,â I say while Stanya chuckles.
âMom, donât.â Gedric says quickly.
Angela smirks. âIâll be overjoyed when you become my daughter.â
I choke while Gedric reaches for his mother. âOkay, thatâs enough out of you. Look at that, an unconscious Dad,â Gedric says, grabbing her shoulder and turning her away from me. âGet her out of here,â he tells Stanya.
