Chapter Forty-Two
I walk through the forest silently, listening for any sound Gedric might make. I could use the earthâs magic to track him, but I think Iâll give him some time to calm down. Itâll also give him time to realize that he is astonishingly more powerful than even I had anticipated. Itâll give me time to process it as well. On another eventful note, he did manage to stop the water from dropping on his head. He seems to draw great strength out of anger, now I just need to teach him to channel that technique into another emotion, or I might have to do this again.
After walking for about fifteen minutes, I manage to find a crater with a bunch of down trees inside of it. âI warned you to calm down.â I tell him, stepping into the crater.
âWhy did you do this?â He asks from underneath a tree.
âBecause if you had bothered to look where you were stepping, you would have noticed that you were starting to create a massive sinkhole. Your anger was heating the earth, turning it into lava, which in turn was starting to make the earth sink. You would have destroyed the town.â I tell him, slowly walking down the steep new hill to get to him at the center of the crater.
âThen you just had to attack me with a strong gust of wind, and since I canât let magic touch me, I directed your attack back to you. You did part of this to yourself. I only got you into the air.â I finally reach the trees covering him at the bottom of the crater, and use some of the earthâs magic to move it.
I lean over one of the logs to look at him. Heâs staring at me with such a wide eyed expression that I canât help but laugh. âPretty powerful, huh?â
âI did this?â He asks, motioning around him.
âYou also stopped the water from dropping on your head.â I point out, looking at some of his cuts. Theyâre nothing serious, but not something that should be ignored either.
âI did?â He asks, lifting his head up.
I nod. âYes, you did.â
âFinally!â He yells, letting his head drop and raises his hands in the air; celebrating his small victory.
I giggle. âAnd just so you know, I didnât say those things to you out of guilt last night. I truly did want you to understand why I didnât tell you my memory had returned. I could have delivered that news a little better, but it was a very emotional day yesterday. â
He lifts his head up giving me an even look. âI swear Natasha, if youâre lying to me right now, Iâ¦wonât really do anything, but Iâll be mad.â
I give a small laugh. âIâm not. I was sorry that I had to lie to you and hurt you the way I had. The Fates would have done to you what they did to Stanya if they had. I wasnât expecting them to do that whole soul napping thing, like they had, or I would have told you earlier and saved myself a lot of heartache.â
He sits up. âHeartache?â
âYes you dummy. I sort of like you too, when youâre not being an overprotective jerk.â
âOverprotective jerk?â He demands, leaning closer to me.
âYou have to admit that youâve been pretty bad.â I tell him, letting my hair fall over my shoulder.
âOnly because death seems to like you more than a fresh carcass.â
âTo be fair, I am a guardian of a symbol that partially means death.â I point out.
âFair enough, but with how much youâve seen death, it looks like itâs courting you.â
âI prefer to think of it as itâs just checking up on me.â I look him over. âNow are you alright, or do I need to get your father?â
He grimaces. âMaybe. It hurts to move my leg. Will you please look at it?â
I lean over to see his legs. They look fine to me. Then again, heâs wearing black trousers so itâs hard to see if there is blood. âI donât see anything sticking out.â
âLetâs have you take a closer look.â He tells me as he grabs my waist and pulls me over the log. An involuntary squeal escapes me while he cradles me into his chest.
I lift my head off his chest. âDo you want me to look at your leg that badly?â
âMaybe after a little kiss,â he tells me, pulling me up his chest to meet his lips. I push into him when a sweet heat touches my tongue. I let my hand rest on his chest to give me more leverage to lean into him. He puts his hands on my waist, making my entire body tremble under his touch.
His hands drop to the small of my back, making me shiver. âSo do you think Iâm going to be okay?â
âI think itâll take a lot more than a hard fall to hurt you,â I agree.
âHowâs the arm?â He asks, looking me over.
âIâm not the one that fell out of the sky here.â I tell him as I wiggle up on his chest. âHow are you? Anything impaled?â
He chuckles. âNo, nothing like that. Iâm just sore. Maybe a bit bruised.â
âIâll still have Stanya check you over.â I switch to a more serious topic. âYou do realize that you nearly caused your entire town to sink right?â
He gives me a disbelieved look. âI did?â
âYes, because you lost your temper. Thatâs why I had to launch you into the air. I broke your root and concentration. I corrected the damage you did before coming to find you. With your strength, and connection, you are going to have to learn to keep your anger in check. If you had been training with someone other than me, today could have gone a lot more differently.â
âHow differently?â
âGoodbye Frostula differently.â I tell him, touching his chest gently when his breath speeds up. âYouâre a bit more powerful than I had anticipated, so Iâm going to have to teach you to use something other than anger to gear your strength towards your goal.â
He blushes deeply and covers his face with his hand before letting it drop back onto the ground. âThatâs terrifying. I only started learning this skill just to spend time with you.â
I chuckle, âI figured. Turns out youâre gifted with it. Who knew?â
He shudders. âSo if I lose my temper, I could wipe out a city?â
âWelcome to my world,â I tell him, giving him a smirk. âSo now I get to teach you how to channel your anger into something more productive.â
âIâve never lost my temper like that before.â He says, closing his eyes. âI donât know what happened.â
âWhen you have magic coursing through you, and youâre angry, it amplifies your emotions. Thatâs why itâs best not to practice your magic while youâre in that kind of a state.â I raise my eyebrow at him. âSo I make you insane huh?â
He grimaces. âThose were a poor choice of words. I was just so jealous how easy this is for you, and so frustrated I couldnât talk to you. I wanted to talk to you this morning, but when I woke up you were gone. No one saw you leave. I spent all day trying to find you, and then Stanya is the one to get you to open that door. I know you two grew up together, but I hate that you will talk to her but not me.â
âYou do realize weâre still trying to get to know each other, right?â I ask, looking him over. âSo youâre going to need to ease up on your expectations.â
He groans. âI know. Sorry, this is new to me. Iâve never dated anyone outside of Frostula before. We know everything about everyone, so it seems like we should already be on that stage, at least in our friendship.â
I try my hardest not to laugh. âI get what youâre saying, but thatâs not how it typically works in the Sheika Clans.â
âIâm starting to learn that.â He looks me over and grimaces. âSorry for being insane.â
âI think we can both own that.â I flash him a smile. âHow about you learn to give me space, and Iâll learn to be a bit more open with you?â
There is a light that lights up his eyes as he flashes me a grin. âIâll agree to that. So what do you want to do now?â
âWell we can keep practicing, kiss, or get you out of the ground while we wait for Stanya to find us. Iâm game for either option.â
âOr Stanya could find you two right now,â Stanya yells from up top. âDo you two want to be left alone,â she puts her hands on her hips, âor do you want to tell me what happened?â
âGedric lost control of his temper, so I had to launch him,â I tell her, rolling off of him.
âAs one does,â she says, giving me an amused expression. âSeriously, what happened?â
âHe lost control of his temper and was making a sink hole. Iâm not kidding. He was about to sink Frostula.â I look at Gedric. âHis power is too influenced by his temper. Weâll have to work on that.â
He grimaces. âNow Iâm just scared to use my magic.â
âJust donât use it without me and youâll be okay. Since youâre already able to connect to it, it is something youâre always going to have to be aware of. When you feel your temper getting the better of you, either shut off your emotions, or find a way to calm down.â
Gedric looks me over with an appraising eye. âWas that what was happening last night? With your panic attack.â
I nod. âYes. When I get angry though, I have to shut off my emotions.â
âWhich also explains last night.â He says, clicking that final piece together.
âPrecisely.â I look up to Stanya. âWhere is Halthin?â
She flips her hair. âThrowing a temper tantrum because he still canât throw a blasted ball.â
âHe did just go through a pretty severe black magic poisoning. Itâs impressive that he can do a ball right now.â
âThatâs what I said!â She rolls her eyes. âBut no, itâs not good enough because heâs struggling and Gedric is doing so well, heâs suddenly the weaker one.â
âThey both have their own strengths, and Gedric is his own exception.â I stand up, sensing a long discussion. âHalthin is aware that Gedric is the Champion, right?â
âOh heâs aware,â Stanya says, leaning towards me as I start walking up the hill. When I get near the top, she grabs my good arm and helps me up the rest of the way. âThanks for coming up here, there is no way I was going down there in heels.â
We look down to Gedric. âAre you coming up, or are you going to stay in there?â
Heâs staring at me, his head going back and forth between Stanya and myself. âWhat just happened? I thought we were still talking about Halthin.â
âWe are, keep up.â Stanya says, flipping her hair again in annoyance.
âBut weâre walking?â
âGirls walk and talk.â She says, watching him get out of the crater, revealing a perfect imprint of his body. âIf you want in on girl talk, you better keep up.â
I roll my eyes. âSo if heâs aware that Gedric is an anomaly, and that his poisoning was so severe, why is he acting like a child?â I ask, hooking my good arm with Stanyaâs.
âBecause heâs jealous of the amount of time youâre spending with Gedric.â Stanya answers, pouting.
âI thought he liked you,â I demand, getting annoyed by this.
âHe did, then you had to go and die, and it scared the living hell out of him to think heâs going to lose you permanently.â
âHow does that make sense? You two are dating for crying out loud,â I tell her, getting insanely annoyed by this.
âApparently he doesnât know if we should be dating, since he still has feelings for both of us.â
âTell him to commit and just get over it.â
She groans. âI want to, but what can I do?â
âMove on from him, since heâs being an asshole.â
âI want to, but heâs perfect on paper,â she sighs, leaning into me. âAnd the sex is amazing. Heâs just soâ¦â
âUnwilling to commit?â I volunteer for her.
âNo.â
âJealous?â
âNo.â
âAsinine?â
âNo.â
âFlakey?â
âNo.â
âIndecisive?â
âThere it is!â Stanya tells me. âI get that heâs on the fence, but I still donât see why he wants to keep being so finicky. First he wants me, now he wants you.â
âMaybe he wants what he canât have?â
âThat, or heâs never really moved on and heâs trying to get his cake and eat it to.â Stanya muses. âHeâs so infuriating.â
âWhose infuriating?â Halthin asks, coming up from behind us. âWhat are we talking about?â
âYour attributes.â I tell him, coming to a stop. I give Stanya his hand and smile at the two. âIâm so happy you two are together. My two best friends.â I smile while Stanya beams and Halthin grimaces a little.
I take a step back and grab Gedricâs hand. âNow you two talk and hang out. Gedric and I have a date with Drew.â I nod towards Gedricâs bleeding cuts. âWeâll be grabbing dinner together if you want to join for a double date.â
âSounds perfect. Weâll pick you up.â Stanya tells me.
âSee you then.â I kiss her cheek and drag Gedric away.
