Chapter 18: 18. Patched Up

Water AscendantWords: 7257

My shoulder hurt.

Badly.

If it was just from swinging the sword around it wouldn’t hurt this much. But this was from something else.

Just because they stumbled a bit and I got up and swung the sword in my hand dangerously wild, that didn’t mean they couldn’t fight back.

One of them managed to stab my right shoulder with a spear before my sword caught him on his neck.

Thankfully he didn’t hit any joints and it somehow went straight in and out. So maybe it wasn’t accurate to say he hit my shoulder? But my shoulder area? I don’t know, I don’t study anatomy.

Anyway, I had to go.

There were still enemies in the house, and I had no idea if the rest of the family is still alive or not.

“FUCKING DIE YOU PIECE OF SHIT!!”

Well there’s Aunt Risha.

I ignored the pain in my shoulder, the notifications at the corner of my vision, and the weird feeling of the fact I just took a few more lives.

None of it felt right, but for some reason it didn’t feel as bad as the man in the water.

I shivered as that thought crosses my mind.

Let’s leave it alone…no time for that.

I ran to the sound of the voice, which led me to the kitchen. There were plenty of bodies on the way there but thankfully none of them so far were members of the family.

Turning a corner and seeing the kitchen in entirety, Aunt Risha was straddling a red person as she repeatedly rammed one of the kitchen knives into his chest time and time again while tears streamed down her face.

“Aunt Risha!”

Making my way over, I reached out to grab my aunt to get her to stop, only to see a bit beyond her and finally notice the cause of her tears.

Uncle Lenny was laying there weakly on the ground with a sword lodged about an inch into the left side of his neck.

Fuck me.

For a moment there my brain kind of froze and I didn’t know what to do until I noticed something extremely vital.

His chest!

His chest was still rising and falling.

Part of me wanted to question how the hell he was still alive, but there was no time for that either.

“He’s still alive! Aunt Risha! Uncle Lenny is still alive!”

I grabbed my Aunt and shook her strongly one good time to snap her awake to my voice.

“Aunt Risha!! He’s still alive! We have to help him now!”

Her eyes widened like saucers before she pushed me aside with strength I didn’t know she had, and rushed to Uncle Lenny’s side.

“Lenny?! Baby?! I’m right here honey! Stay with me!!”

She screamed and fussed over the wound like a buzzing bee that just found fresh pollen. I could tell she didn’t know what to do, and it wasn’t like I knew what to do either.

But we had to do something.

We couldn’t just leave him lying there and bleeding out.

Fuck what should I do. Do we take the sword out? No that might make him bleed out faster. But how the hell were we going to patch the wound without removing the sword? I have no flipping idea dammit.

And just as I started to feel a bit helpless at the situation, a voice came out of nowhere like a light to part the darkness.

“Freddy stop standing there and grab the fricking first-aid box in the cupboard!”

It was Aunt Kimberly.

AH.

AUNT KIMBERLY.

She was a damn nurse!

I snapped out of my spiraling daze and ran to the cupboard where we kept the kitchen first-aid box and almost stumbled with how fast I was moving.

After the giving her the box she knelt down next to Uncle Lenny and grabbed Aunt Risha.

“Snap out of it Risha! We can’t save him if your losing your damn mind!”

That was apparently all Aunt Risha needed in terms of a wake up call and she looked as serious as ever she stared Aunt Kimberly in the eyes.

“Tell me what to do Kim.”

“Right now I need you to grab some water and whatever towels you can find. Freddy, you come sit down right next to me.”

Both of us did as asked as quickly as possible, and in the middle of everything that was happening, a red person stumbled into the kitchen from the way I came, but before any of us could react to it, a spear came flying from God knows where and skewered him.

Grandpa then come roaring into the room while being covered in blood.

He looked like something that jumped right out of a mythological piece of Viking history.

His eyes darted around the kitchen as he took in the situation, and his brows furrowed more deeply than ever before.

“I’ll protect you. Focus on Lenny.”

That was all he said before he stormed off again, making sure to pluck his spear from the body it was lodged into.

Well shit Grandpa.

“You heard the old man! Focus!”

Aunt Risha came back with a couple bottles of water, and an entire roll of paper towels. Aunt Kimbery then used the water, and the paper towels to wash and wipe away all of the blood and grime that surrounded the wound.

It honestly wasn’t a pretty sight.

She then opened the first-aid kit and revealed its contents.

There were a whole bunch of things in there and she took one of them that looked to be wipes and started wiping around the wound with the sword still placed there.

Her hands moved with ease and precision. There wasn’t a single wasted movement in her actions as she did everything in silence and without missing a beat.

She then took something else out of the box and ripped it open. It looked like a really think piece of gauze.

“Freddy here. Now listen carefully. I am going to remove the sword. The second I do so, I need you to take the blood stopper bandage and apply it to the wound very quickly and hold it there tightly.

“Do you understand Freddy? You can’t be slow with this.”

I nodded seriously.

“Good. Risha, go around to his feet and prop them up on your lap, okay? And no matter what happens, do not freak out. Just keep his feet in your lap nice and steady.”

Aunt Risha nodded, but her body was practically shaking as she did as Aunt Kimberly asked.

“Ready Freddy?”

“Yes.”

I stared at the spot the sword was lodged into Uncle Lenny’s neck and brought my hand as close as possible.

Once I was in the position, Aunt Kimberly placed her hands as gently as possible on the sword and then yanked it out sharply.

I had no idea if she was supposed to do it gently and slowly or as sharply and suddenly like she just did it. But it was out, and I didn’t waste any time placing the blood stopper thing on the gruesome looking wound.

Uncle Lenny’s body jolted for a bit, but he didn’t wake up.

Aunt Kimberly then grabbed the small roll of gauze in the kit and began wrapping it around the wound tightly.

I slipped my hand out slowly as she wrapped over the area I just moved my hand away from.

The wrapping continued until Uncle Lenny’s neck was tightly bound.

“He needs stiches and a whole host of other things, but we don’t have time for that. Keep his legs elevated but we also need to find a blanket to cover him. The warmer he is the better.

“And you, let me look at your shoulder. If your mom saw you now she might faint.”

She then spent a few minutes patching up my shoulder as best as she could without stiches.

After that I left to go find more work.

I wanted to stay and help them, but I needed to check on the rest of the house.

It was going to be a long night.
