Chapter 4: 4. Risk Takers

Water AscendantWords: 6580

I took a deep breath and dove under the water after the lone injured shark. With that new Trait in my body I could last a bit longer under water and there was no reason I could think of in that moment to wait for it to come to me.

So I dove in after the damn thing.

I picked it out and swam towards it and since it was already pretty close it only took a few moments before it reached me.

The maw of the shark was gaping wide open as if it was trying to swallow me whole, but since I wasn’t a shark there was no way I could ever hope to out maneuver it in water so I would meet it head on!

As it neared, I gripped the small knife handle with both hands before waiting till the last possible second as the maw of the shark neared my chest area and then brought both hands down as hard as I could.

Bam!

I must have been stronger than I realized because I was able to drive the pocket knife all the way down to the hilt into top of the snout of the shark.

All that force and pain caused the shark to wince and bring it’s jaws closer together but not all the way closed.

Though it was closed enough that I didn’t get bitten into right then and there but instead I essentially got rammed in the chest by the shark and was now being driven backwards in the water.

My chest hurt like hell and it feels like I got hit with a sledge hammer. But somehow one of my hands still held onto the knife for dear life, while the other one gripped onto the shark as best as I could.

Fuck, I can’t keep getting driven back like this.

I tried to pull the knife back but the fucking handle broke off.

Dammit Grandpa this old ass knife!!!

Shit, not seeing any other option, I grit my teeth then slid the old wooden handle down a bit in my hands and just repeatedly stabbed it into the eye of the shark.

Maybe if I wasn’t underwater I would’ve screamed out but instead I focused all my energy into stabbing the eyes of the shark as hard and as many times as I could.

The shark eventually stopped going forward and instead began thrashing about widely and I was pushed aside in the water.

I kept my guard up but without a proper knife I wouldn’t be able to do much now that we were separated.

But thankfully, the shark didn’t make any motions to chase me and instead it just kept thrashing about in pain as blood flowed like a torrent out of its eyes primarily and then again from the wound I left on its snout with my knife.

Stolen from Royal Road, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon.

The thrashing went on for a few moments later before it slowly came to a halt and then it’s body hung limp in the water.

Oh shit I did it.

Then as if to hammer home the fact I actually killed the shark, a notification flashed.

Ding!

8XP Gained

Only 8XP for one shark.

That’s quite the distance to level two.

But no time to worry about that where’s Grandpa.

I quickly swam up and once I broke the surface of the water, I looked around to frantically trying to find Grandpa.

Thankfully I didn’t have to look too far and I could see some splashing not too far from where I was and quickly started swimming in that direction.

When I got there the splashing had seemingly just ended and what I saw left me kind of shocked.

Not kind of, but really shocked.

Grandpa’s upper body could be soon above the water , and he was looking at me with a wide grin on his face.

“So you really didn’t wanna get that ass whooping huh? Fair enough I guess, good job on killing the shark.”

I didn’t even have time to give him a snappy reply because what I saw shocked me.

Two sharks floated ominously by his side, but that wasn’t even the shocking part.

It was the fact that he was bloody all over, and even from where I was, I could quite clearly see teeth marks on his arms and shoulders.

But despite that he still had a wide grin on his face as if nothing was wrong at all.

My Grandpa has always been a tough nut, but this is something else, this is… this is… what the fuck is this…

“Hey, stop staring at me like that, and don’t think I didn’t hear you curse earlier. I’m telling your mother!”

Heh…why do I even bother.

After that me and Grandpa cut off a few pieces from the sharks. Something we could do only after we spent a few minutes prying out the blade I broke.

Although the battle was dangerous, it was a blessing nonetheless because we could only go so far without eating something.

Though…eating the raw shark meat is something I don’t think I’ll look back on fondly.

Anyway, me and Grandpa continued swimming and taking plenty of floating breaks for a while longer.

Until I saw light.

Not from a building on land…but coming from beneath the ocean.

“Grandpa look below! Do you see the light?”

I yelled over the noise of the waves to get Grandpa’s attention and once he heard me and understood what I said, he put his head under the water to check out what I was referring to.

“Yeah I see it, can’t tell what it is though, what do you think?”

“No clue, but based on how things are looking right now, it might be worth it to check it out.”

His brows furrowed deeply again which of course told me has in deep thought.

“Think you can hold your breath long enough to go down and come back up?”

I looked at the light and thought about it for a moment…

Then I turned to my Grandpa and nodded.

“Alright, come back up at the first sign of trouble, I’ll be watching.”

After getting the go ahead from Grandpa, I took a deep breath and immediately dove under.

After swimming as fast as I could towards the light, eventually I could make it out what exactly I was moving towards.

It looked to be a cave entrance…but it was small and I couldn’t see the inside no matter how deeply I looked.

Meanwhile the light I saw earlier was coming from something attached to the top of the entrance.

A blue gem-like stone seemed to be the source of the light and was actually nothing more than a glint.

I approached it a bit more then saw something that almost made me release the breath I was holding.

Enter Dungeon: Little Maw?

Grade: F

Yes/No?

Oh shit.

A damn Dungeon. And it’s F grade…just like me and Grandpa. I wonder if Grandpa is going to want to do it.

A few moments later after I swam back and I got my answer.

“Hell yeah we gotta risk it for the biscuit man. We still have a long way to go to get back to shore, and if there’s anything I learned in writing all those books of mine, it’s that you gotta take risks, and there might be something in here that could aid us in making it back to land.

“So let’s do it!”
