Chapter 7: 7. Daryl

What the hell did he mean there were more than a few others. Is he telling me that the ever so common Mage, Warrior, Rouge, Hunter combo wasn’t all there was to it?

“Why are we keeping secrets Grandpa? Spill the beans! What else is there?!”

He waved me off in a grunt.

“Hey! Cmon spill it!”

“Ahh leave me alone runt! You’ll see when it’s your turn.”

Of course this was all just good banter but I really did want to know what else was there.

Whatever, I’m assuming I’ll get the same option when I reached level 5 so I’ll leave the old man alone for now.

By the time the 30 minutes were up we already back to swimming towards land. We were pretty sure we were heading in the right direction when approaching the Dungeon and since it spat us out at the same place, we knew which way to continue towards.

Only we weren’t quite the same duo now compared to when we entered the Dungeon. I was now firmly level 4 and had a couple extra points into a strength and endurance and when coupled with the effect from the Trait, I was swimming a whole lot easier.

Also there was now something tied around my wrist. A small Mawskin Pouch that wasn’t completely empty.

In fact there were more than a few coins present in it. If I had to guess I would say there made out of Copper and Bronze.

All of them were a part of the reward my Grandpa got.

Not only did he get enough XP to reach Level 5. He also received 50 Copper coins, and 10 Bronze coins. I had no idea what type of value they had but he got them.

In addition to that, he also received a small dagger. The blade was about 6 Inches and curved. And the handle seemed to be made out of a particularly large fang.

Apparently it was called a Little Maw Dagger. Something the system told him about. The same as it did with my Mawskin Pouch.

He was currently swimming while holding it in his hands cause he didn’t really have anywhere to put it. I bet he wish he got a pouch of his own now huh.

…Though I’m sure he wasn’t too jealous of me since he also got his class.

Polearm Initiate.

And once more I shouldn’t be surprised.

Grandpa quite literally had a ceremonial family spear hanging above his mantle in the family room back at his house.

It quite literally cost him a few thousand dollars to make and was a genuine spear.

The type of things that happened when you gave a nerd money.

If you encounter this narrative on Amazon, note that it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

Not that I was complaining, since I too was a fellow nerd and so was my dad. My Grandpa and Grandma quite literally birthed a family of nerds.

Hopefully that gives us a leg up in this world we were in…

POV Daryl Williams

“We need to get to Fred! What about Fred?!”

“Honey, Freddy is with my father on the boat, he’ll be fine. If anything I’d be more worried about whatever or whoever would try to touch Freddy while he was with Dad.

“We need to focus on getting to the compound.”

My wife was a calm and powerful woman in almost every situation, except when it came to Fred.

And how could I blame her? Fred was our only child and he was our pride and joy. No good parent worth their own shit would be alright when their child was in potential danger.

So of course I felt the same way, but I wasn’t joking when I said I’d be more worried about whoever attacked Fred because he was with my Dad.

My father was and still is a crazy man and practically raised us like we were in the damn military.

And the level of discipline he instilled into us was multiplied by ten when it came to the standards he held himself to.

The man was in his early 70s but I would bet my house that he was stronger than most 20 year olds out there.

And if this system stuff was what I thought it was…then it would be like giving a tiger wings.

I’m pretty sure I read that in a book somewhere.

Anyway, we need to get home.

We were currently hiding behind a truck in the parking garage we ran into after everything went to shit.

The system came, made everyone level 1, and plenty of cars and what not immediately crashed when faced with the sudden distraction.

Maybe things wouldn’t be so bad if that’s all there was, but practically a whole army of red people with leather armor and medieval weaponry showed up right after that from who knows where and they didn’t waste any time in starting to kill people.

Just like all my brothers and sisters, Dad made sure we practiced gun safety, did training with guns, and ensured we at minimum had our licenses to carry a weapon if we chose to.

Of course not all of us did, but I wasn’t one of them.

The second things went left I took it out and fired a shot at the red bastard who ran up on me and my wife and all it took was one headshot and the bastard dropped dead.

Red people still bled.

Chaos ensued after that, and we took the time to run.

But things didn’t end there.

Ding!

1787XP Earned!

[Level +7]

Please choose your Class!

I hadn’t even picked one of those Trait things it mentioned yet and now all of a sudden I was being asked to pick a class.

Footsteps

“YDFGD!!! JKDHFJ!!!”

Fuck, there’s no time.

All my knowledge about everything happening around me, came from my Dad’s books and I’m, sure if I took the time to scroll the available list of both Traits and Classes then it was likely that I picked something that synergized, but reality isn’t always so kind.

My wife was worried sick about our son and scared about what was happening around us. And my son was probably still in the middle of ocean dealing with who knows what.

There was nothing that would stop me from reaching him if I needed to and also protecting my wife.

Nothing.

I quickly picked the first good trait I saw and picked a class that dealt in combat.

And I apparently had 14 Stat Points to allocate so half were dumped in strength and the other half in endurance.

A burning sensation immediately overtook my body as the gains from the newly allocated Trait, Class, and stat allocation made themselves known.

The burn wasn’t enough to kill my drive though.

We would make it home.

And I would see my son again.

These red bastards are about to find out there was price to pay for threatening my family.

POV Fred Williams

Night had descended on the ocean.

Maybe other people would’ve been scared about swimming in the darkness like this, but honestly this was one of the best parts about being in the water for me.

I loved how the night sky looked out here. No buildings, smoke or manmade noise to ruin the experience.

The only sounds were the ones nature produced.

It was beautiful.

And it was this beauty that was ruined by the return of the destroyers of my Grandpa’s boat.

The giant birds and their red riders were back.

And Grandpa was furious.
