âWhen these two kids just got here, theyâd ask me when they could see Mommy again every day. Theyâd even bawl their eyes out all the timeâ¦â
âWhat?â Stella raised her head to look at him. âWhy didnât you tell me?â
âBecause if I told you about it,â Roger sighed, âthen youâd drop everything and rush back to Compassvale. I just didnât want to trouble you, thatâs allâ¦â
As he spoke, he suddenly noticed Weston Ford behind Stella. His face grew severe, and he stepped forward to stand between Weston, Stella, and the kids.
âWhat are you doing here?â Roger demanded, glaring at Weston with a look of apparent hostility, his eyes burning with resentment and displeasure.
Weston paused, but he did not even bother to look at Roger. Instead, his eyes were fixed on Stella, who was busy hugging the two kids. This softened his expressions considerably, and with a soft voice, he replied, âIâm here to see the kids.â
âTheyâve got nothing to do with you!â snapped Roger, oblivious to the fact that Stella had admitted that Weston was the kidsâ father. He sneered and added, âYou mustâve forgotten that I told you these two kids only belonged to Stella and the Garcia family, havenât you? If you think that theyâve got any connection to you, then I can tell you that youâre being delusional!â
After speaking, he glanced at Stella and gave her a conflicted look. She stood up and whispered to him, âI told him the truth, Rogerâ¦â
âWhat?â Rogerâs eyes widened in shock. He stared at her and asked, âWhen did you do that? Why didnât you tell me about it?â
âItâs not something that we can hide forever anyway,â Stella replied in a hushed voice, looking down.
âBesides, he really is their father, and we canât deny that. I just want the kids to decide for themselves when they grow up.â
Roger took a deep breath.
âBut theyâre still so young!â he argued. âWhat do they know? Besides, I see no point in letting them accept a man like him as their father even when they grow up!â
Stella sighed softly.
âIâm not sure if Iâd made the right decision eitherâ¦â she told him, massaging the point between her brows.
Seeing her looking conflicted softened Rogerâs expressions. He then turned to give Weston a stern look before warning him, âDonât think that you can do whatever you want just because youâre their biological father! Let me remind you that it was you who had abandoned them yourself back then, just like how you abandoned your first child! So donât even dream of trying to get closer to them!â
Their first child would forever be the wall of pain between Stella and Weston.
Once Roger was done speaking, Westonâs face grew cold, and he looked at Roger intently before declaring, âI will never let such a tragedy happen again.â
âYouâre one to talk!â Roger tugged at Westonâs necktie, cutting him off. âDid you forget who has been raising them these three years? Who endured all the pain and suffering to give birth to them? And who do you think it was that had been deprived of rest or sleep because she had to take care of them? Do you have any idea how much sheâd suffered all these years? A man like you couldnât possibly comprehend it! You know nothing about the pain of childbirth, much less anything about the hardships of parenting! What right do you have to make such a grand declaration so easily?!â
Westonâs eyes trembled. He was speechless. Roger was not wrongâhe had absolutely no right to say he would protect them.
But by the same logic, even Stella had no right to say it either.
He pushed Rogerâs hand aside, looked him dead in the eye, and told him, âEven if I donât have any rights, I still want to make it up to them.â
âI know you donât like me much,â Weston continued, â but have you ever thought about how the kids might need a complete family? That they need a father?â
âThey just need a good man to take care of them!â Roger retorted. âThey donât need you!â
Roger wanted to say that he could be their father too, but he knew that his relationship with Stella was on shaky grounds right now. If he ever said anything like that, all it would do was make her grow more tired of him.
And so, he pushed those thoughts to the back of his mind and glared viciously at Weston, telling him, âIf youâre trying to take them back with you, Iâll tell you right now that it wonât be easy!â
âI know,â replied Weston. âBut Iâll do anything in my power to get their acceptance and forgiveness.â
