A small inn at the entrance of Darha Village.
On the first floor of this inn, which also served meals, several peddlers were having lunch.
However, few of them were solely focused on their meals.
This was because there were two strange fellows among the guests.
âOh! Ohhhh!â
âItâs, itâs delicious!â
âAh, so this is what âtasteâ is!â
âYes, this is what âboilingâ means!â
The two grown men had ordered nothing more than two loaves of barley bread and a bowl of stew, yet they were reverently gazing at the food as if they were performing some sort of ritual. Each time they took a bite, they caused a commotion.
Naturally, to the others, these men appeared to be quite unhinged.
âWhatâs with those guys?â
âWhy are they making such a fuss?â
âDid they starve for three days or something?â
âIf they were that hungry, shouldnât they be shoveling it down? Why are they making such a show of eating it bite by bite?â
Even as the other guests murmured among themselves, the bizarre behavior of the two young men did not cease.
A short while later, when the innkeeper brought them two mugs of ale, they even started to shed tears.
âGasp! Young master, this isâ!â
âAlcohol!â
âAh, just the smell is enough to make me feel faint!â (EN : The cringe is so great Iâm getting second-hand embarrassmentâ¦)
It wasnât some legendary liquor. It was just ale brewed at the village distillery.
In fact, the higher-quality ale had already been supplied to the lord, leaving only the lower-grade stuff for them.
Their reaction after gulping it down was truly a sight to behold.
âAhhh!â
âI think Iâd risk my life for just one more of theseâ¦â
âYou literally did risk your life, young master.â
Seeing the two trembling after just a sip of ale, the other guests came to a conclusion.
âTheyâre pitifully crazy.â
âLetâs just ignore them.â
Regardless of how others reacted, Karnak and Varos were completely blissful.
It was the first meal they had tasted in decades.
Each bite brought a surge of supreme pleasure. They truly felt that nothing could make them happier than this.
â¦Or so they thought!
âHereâs your dish!â
At the table right next to them, a dish of chicken stir-fry, wafting an incredible aroma, was served!
âGasp! They have chicken dishes here too?â
âThis must be a high-class restaurant!â
Even in a village bustling with trade, rare meats like beef or pork were only seen during festivals, and even then, they were too expensive to eat regularly.
On the other hand, chicken was somewhat affordable. You could keep them in your backyard and twist their necks regularly.
Of course, that didnât mean it was cheap enough to eat whenever you wanted.
The fact that you could get chicken just by paying for it indicated that this village was quite prosperous and had a large population passing through.
Yes, as long as you had the moneyâ¦
The two began whispering to each other.
âIf we had some of that chicken as a side dish with our ale, it would be amazing!â
âHow much do you think that costs?â
It was clear that it wasnât something they could buy with just a few coins.
Those customers were probably quite high-ranking travelers. Even their clothes looked rather exceptional.
Karnakâs eyes suddenly darted around.
âShould we just kill them all and take their stuff?â
âAct like a human! Act like a human, young master.â
Even if they gave up on living like humans, it would be impossible anyway.
Varos pointed this out coldly.
âWhat power do we have to kill everyone here? Weâd end up getting beaten to death instead!â
âY-Yeah, thatâs true.â
They were no longer the Lich King who ruled the world, nor the strongest Death Knight.
With his shoulders drooping, Varos opened his money pouch to calculate the cost of the meal they had just eaten.
âAh, if only we had moneyâ¦â
At that moment.
âHuh?â
Suddenly, Varosâs eyes widened in surprise.
âWhatâs wrong?â
âYoung master, somethingâs strange.â
âWhat is?â
Varos cautiously looked around before pulling his hand out of the pouch.
Karnakâs eyes also grew as wide as full moons.
âHuh?â
A silver coin was glimmering between Varosâs fingers.
âWhy is that in there?â
Quickly, Varos stuffed the silver coin back into the pouch and lowered his voice.
âItâs not just one.â
He then subtly showed the inside of the pouch to Karnak without letting others see.
âThere are more silver coins than copper ones.â
âThat canât be right.â
Baffled, Karnak also checked inside the pouch.
It was true.
There were a lot of copper coins, but more than half were silver coins.
âYou just noticed the change in the contents of the pouch? Didnât you check it even once on the way here?â
âWhy would I check when I already knew what was inside?â
âAs a servant, you should have at least checked that!â
âI was the second-in-command of Necropia until this morning! I havenât been a servant for over 100 years.â
For a moment, Karnak wondered if the pouch itself had been switched, but that wasnât the case.
The family crest was clearly engraved on the entrance of the pouch. It was only the contents that differed from their memory.
Exchanging glances, the two continued their whispered conversation.
âExactly how much did we take for our expenses back then?â
âItâs been over a hundred years. How could I remember?â
âI do distinctly recall that we were extremely frugal because we were so poor.â
The memory of living in poverty isnât something easily forgotten.
âThereâs no way we had this much money back then.â
âWe did save diligently, though.â
ââ¦This isnât a matter of saving.â
No matter how much they saved, copper coins wouldnât magically merge into silver coins.
âWhat on earth is going on?â
As Karnak stared at the silver coins filling the pouch, he was suddenly struck by fear.
This wasnât just about having more moneyâit was clear something was wrong.
âWhat mistake did I make? Did we really go back in time? Or did the time-space magic even work properly in the first place?â
His train of thought was abruptly interrupted by Varosâs next question.
âExcuse me, young master?â
âWhat?â
âCan we afford to eat chicken now?â
Between the chicken before them and the unknown fear, the scales tipped easily.
âForget it, letâs just eat first and think later!â
Karnak shouted confidently.
âOrder up!â
***
He bit into the greasy chicken.
âHa-ha-ha!â
Then he gulped down the ale.
âHee-hee-hee!â
They ate, drank, and then ate and drank some more.
âHee-hee-ha-ha!â
As they devoured the food with wild abandon, the two reveled in bliss.
When they finally finished eating, Varos muttered contentedly, like a bear preparing for hibernation.
âWow, I think Iâm going to lose my mind.â
âI agree. Was meat always this delicious? I doubt even drugs could compare to this.â
âYouâve tried them before and didnât feel much, remember?â
âThat was because we were both undead at the time.â
In the long history of the continent, there has never been a case of undead beings getting high.
âAnyway, this is greatâ¦â
Leaning back in his chair, Karnak murmured lazily.
This is amazing.
This is beyond incredible.
Iâm so happy I could die.
It was a pleasure worth giving up all power, authority, and glory for.
But they couldnât just stay like this forever.
âNow, letâs pull ourselves together and think about this.â
Straightening up, Karnak looked at the pouch of coins.
âWhat on earth could have happened?â
Varos also grew serious.
âCould our memories be wrong?â
âYou might misremember having nine coins as ten. But mistaking ten silver coins for ten copper ones? Thatâs impossible.â
âThen, could it be that your magic went wrong?â
âHow would a time-reversal spell go wrong in a way that turns copper coins into silver ones?â
ââ¦Did the distortion of time and space somehow snatch our coins and replace them with silver?â
Karnak asked, as if talking to an absolute fool.
âDoes that even make sense to you?â
Varos responded, as if addressing someone even more foolish.
âThatâs for you to figure out, young master. What do you expect from an uneducated swordsman?â
It was such a straightforward argument that Karnak had no choice but to close his mouth.
Varos continued in a soothing tone.
âLetâs return to the main house first. It wonât be too late to assess the situation after that, will it?â
âThatâs true.â
Karnak leaned back in his chair.
However, the thought of returning home felt overwhelming. It would take at least three days to travel from this village of Darha to the Zestrad Estate.
âItâs going to be a tiring journey. Ugh, when are we ever going to walk that long distanceâ¦â
Hearing Karnakâs grumbling, Varos suddenly tilted his head.
âHuh?â
âWhat now?â
âWhen you think about it, do we really need to walk back? This is a relay station village. Why donât we rent some horses?â
Between relay station villages, they rent out swift horses for messengers or merchants in a hurry. Buying a horse would require visiting a larger market, but renting one was possible.
The horses could only be used between relay stations, and the cost was significant, butâ¦
âWhatâs the problem? We have plenty of money!â
Karnak, exasperated, scolded him.
âHave you no concern about where this money came from?â
Shaking his head, Varos countered.
âWill not spending the money make the worry go away?â
âWell, noâ¦â
âThen letâs worry while we spend it! At least our bodies will be comfortable.â
Karnak blinked.
âYour body has to be comfortable for your mind to be at ease, and a calm mind solves problems better!â
What initially seemed like sheer foolishness actually started to sound quite logical.
âWell, thatâs surprisingly persuasive.â
* * *
After their delightful meal, Karnak and Varos headed to the relay station on the west side of Darha Village.
The Darha relay station was quite a sizable facility, consisting of a two-story wooden building with a large stable attached. As they approached, a middle-aged man eagerly came toward them. He seemed to be the manager of the station.
âOh, youâve returned!â
For a moment, both men froze in place.
âReturned?â
âUs?â
The word âreturnedâ implied that they had visited this place before.
The man continued, bowing slightly as he spoke.
âWeâve taken good care of the horses you left with us.â
âWe left horses here?â
âWe did?â
Despite their bewilderment, the two maintained calm expressions.
The middle-aged man then led them toward the stable. Among the dozen or so horses tied up, two brown steeds began to neigh and stamp their hooves as soon as they saw Karnak and Varos.
*Neigh!*
*Neigh-neigh!*
The man smiled warmly as he soothed the horses.
âThese fellows are excited to see their owners again.â
Karnak and Varos exchanged uneasy looks.
They truly did seem happy to see them, as if they were familiar faces.
âBut this is our first time meeting them.â
âTheyâre so thrilled, itâs almost overwhelming.â
The man handed over the reins and continued in a friendly tone.
âAs instructed, I mixed high-quality feed with beans. Both of them should be brimming with energy.â
His attitude was consistently kind, even somewhat obsequious, which made it clear that he was expecting something in return. Varos gave Karnak a look.
âThis is one of those situations, right?â
Karnak understood immediately.
âIt sure is.â
âShould I go ahead?â
âDo it. Weâll see how he reacts.â
With Karnakâs approval, Varos, adopting a slightly arrogant demeanor, pulled out a silver coin and handed it over.
âYouâve done well. This is a small token of our young masterâs appreciation.â
Instead of being surprised, the man accepted the coin as if he had been expecting it, bowing deeply.
âThank you as always! Iâll fetch the saddles you left as well.â
As the man dashed into the relay station, Karnak muttered to himself.
âAlways?â
âSounds like weâve given him tips like this before.â
âAnd with silver coins, no less.â
âUs?â
They were so baffled that they were nearly speechless.
This was the behavior of a wealthy noble who had more money than sense and little understanding of the world.
âWhat is going on here?â
At this point, even Varos was beginning to feel a creeping sense of unease.
âThis might not be something to be happy about after all.â
âUgh, Iâve been saying that all along, and youâre just getting it now?â
Karnak was deep in thought.
Had they really returned to the past?
It seemed so. The world mostly matched their memories.
But there were significant inconsistencies as well.
âI need to get home quickly. That should be our top priority.â
Meanwhile, Varos was also lost in thought.
âHow should we address them? Hey, what are your names, anyway?â
*Neigh!*
*Neigh-neigh!*
ââ¦Talking to horses. I must be an idiot.â
