Xander My mate was upset. | could smell her unease and sehse it in every move she made. Lanie looked like she was being weighted down. From the look on my brotherâs face, he noticed the same.
âShe says sheâs got something on her mind,â he said through the link.
âWhat's going on, love?â | drew her close so | could nuzzle her cheek. | planted a kiss on her temple. âMmm. You smell good.â
| was relieved when she let out a small chuckle. âItâs just fabric softener.â
âIt's not âjustâ anything,â | told her. âItâs you.â
Lanie looked up at me, and | was glad for the t winkle in her eyes. Her expression still looked a little strained, but at least she was smiling.
âWhereâs Zane?â She paused, eyelids fluttering before her eyes opened fully. âWhatâs he doing outside? Is he okay?â
Mason and | shared a look over the top of her head. Zane had been out chopping firewood for an hour or so. He wouldnât talk about it, but clearly, bis night with the witch had affected him. He claimed he couldnât remember all the details, not that I'd wanted to hear them. | hoped heâd be able to talk to me soon about what was still bothering him.
âHeâs working off some steam, thatâs all. We've all been feeling a little stagnant sitting around here.â The second the words came out, | knew Iâd f ucked up.
Lanieâs entire expression crumbled. Mason shot me a glare. | shot him one back. Lanie shrugged me away from her and went to pick up Stella from the playpen.
âWe need to talk about that,â Lanie said. She kissed the baby until Stella giggled and squirmed to be put back with the other pups.
The three of them were growing so fast, it was crazy. They might as well have been triplets, for as close as they were.
Sometimes, | swore it was hard to tell them apart aside from the color of their hair.
âWe canât stay here forever,â Lanie said firmly. She put her hands on her hips and looked around the living room with a frown.
â|... love this house, but we canât be in Stillwood when we really need to get back to the mansion. You and Zane have duties to the pack, Xander.â
âThere are more important things,â | began, but she held up a hand to stop me.
It was hard to think about the girl Lanie had been the day we'd been ordered to take her as our mate, but every minute | got prouder and prouder of her. That didnât mean | appreciated her trying to shut me down, though. My growl warned her she was stepping a little too hard on my toes.
âWe do need to get home,â she told me. âThere are things we need to face. We canât stay here in this Mason nodded. âHate to step on your toes, bro, but sheâs right.â
| scowled at hearing my own thoughts coming out in his words. Mason raised his eyebrows at me and shrugged.
âSorry, dude, you were sending,â he said through the link. âI canât help it if you think too loud.â
| smelled my Betaâs sweat right before the door swung open. Zane swiped an arm across his forehead. He looked us all over.
âAm | missing something?â
Lanie sighed. âAnswers. We're all missing answers.â
She thought at us in rapid succession, all her questions peppering our minds like hail spattering a windowpane.
Hybrids Orion Malachi The Council Rhiannon Lanieâs thoughts whirled and rambled, almost incoherent. Everything about her screamed tension.
âShe really needs to get away for a bit,â Mason shot over to me.
Zane added, âThis isnât good for her.â
âLuna,â | said sternly to get her to focus.
Lanieâs mind quieted, but her expression was still strained.
âWhy donât you do something nice for yourself?â | told her. âSomething that isnât about us or the kids. Whenâs the last time you talked to Mindy?â
Lanieâs eyes lit up, but only for a second. âI canât risk inviting her here, and | canât exactly go back to the pack mansion just for a visit, can 1?â
âYou had friends here in Stillwood when you were Katie,â Mason pointed out. Something sounded weird in his tone, but he was shielding me from any thoughts he had about that.
â| donât want to risk anyone else,â Lanie snapped at him. She looked immediately upset with herself. âIâm so sorry!â
âYou definitely need some time out of this house.â Zane took her by the upper arms and kissed her firmly on the forehead, then pressed his to it. âListen to your mates. Take a little break. Go for a run. Go shopping.
Get your nails done. Something, anything, so you can relax a little bit.â
âChop some wood?â Lanie teased pointedly.
Lanie sighed. âI guess | could go into town and just grab a coffee. Thereâs that nice little use next door. | could find something to read.â
âPerfect,â Mason said. âGet out of here, before we have to s pank you.â
Agenuine giggle came out of her. âFine. | will. Let me just get changed.â
âItâs not a permanent fix,â Mason thought to me and Zane. âWe're going to have to find some other solutions.â
