Chapter 266 Zane | stopped with my hot grilled sausage halfway to my mouth at the sense of rising rage. | shot my gaze around, looking for Xander. He was talking with Hank, but neither of them looked like they were ready to fight.
| found Lanie with her blonde friend, Quinn. Lanie jumped up from the rocker she'd been sitting on. The anger wasnât coming from her, though.â
Her eyes narrowed. She found me looking at her from across the yard.
âItâs Mason,â she thought at me.
â| donât see him,â | replied.
Xander chimed in. âI saw him go into the house earlier with that Asher dude.â
âOh, no,â Lanie thought. âIâm feeling a lot of anger from him. Where are they? Do you see them?â
The three of us met in the center of the yard. Xander put an arm around Lanie, who looked like sheâd been having a good time.
Her wolf rose, though, sobering her up quickly. She slipped an arm around my waist. To anyone watching, it would look like we all were just enjoying a conversation. | even took a casual bite of my sausage.
âReally, dude?â Xander muttered.
âThey're good,â | told him, chewing.
Lanie squeezed us both. âAsher and Mason were best friends. Close enough that Iâm sure Asher would've been his Beta, if things were different.â
âDo you think he still wants Asher to be? Is that what theyâre talking about right now?â Xander asked quickly.
Lanie shook her head. âIâm trying to see what | can feel from him. Iâm sure theyâve had a lot to talk about.
We did just up and leave Stillwood without a word to anyone. Iâm sure Asherâs pis sed off with him. And She trailed off. Heat rushed off her. She didnât look us in the eye, but Xander and | shared a stare over the top of her head âAsher kind of liked me,â she said, adding quickly when Xander growled, âWhen | was Katie âDid you like him?â Xanderâs voice rasped.
â| didâ Lanie lifted her chin to stare him in the face âHe was funny and kind, and he took me out even though | was pregnant with someone elseâs babyâ
âWith my pup.â Xander growled âDon't act like that was noble or anythingâ | told her with a frown. âYouâre beautiful. Any man would be hannu to taka unui rast. He wasnât drinn unii a fauna and veri ro ne s hit abut nwa him oratitude for heinn a 1/2 decent guy.
âBoth of you, stop,â she ordered with a Luna push. âI had no idea who | was, much less that you were my mates. Besides, | really liked Mason, instead. And since we all ended up here, exactly where the Goddess meant for us to be, thereâs no point in you getting yourself all tangled up about it.â
Xander mumbled something but didnât keep going with it.
Lanie closed her eyes, swaying a little bit. âMasonâs trying to explain things to him. Can you hear anything? Sense anything?â
âNothing.â
âXander said. âNot sure if heâs blocking or just too focused on what's going on.
| concentrated. âThey're just talking, | think. Iâm getting a sense of guilt, confusion, maybe a little impatience?â
âI'm only catching small bits and pieces of that,â Lanle added. âBut if Masonâs in trouble, we should go find him.â
Mason âCheck yourself!â | pushed my Alpha strength toward Asher in a series of short, sharp bursts. | wasnât trying to overwhelm him, just get him to put his wolf away.
His biceps bulged, tearing his shirt as hair sprouted. | pulsed out another burst of energy, hoping heâd respond even though, technically, | wasnât his Alpha.
It didnât look like he considered me his best friend anymore, either.
Or even a friend at all.
For another half a minute or so, | was sure he wasnât going to pull back. Colt snarled and thrashed inside me, eager to battle. | tried one last time to stop this âYou're right!â | shot out at him. âIâm the as shole. | donât blame you for being pi ssed off with me. Hell, you donât even have to forgive me. But I need you to listen to me, let me tell you whatâs been happening, and then, if youâre still angry, you can tell me to f uck off again. You can punch me right in the face, | wonât even step out of the way.â
With painful slowness, Asherâs wolf retreated. He flexed his arms, looking down at the series of tears.
âYou owe me a new fucking shirt.
âDone. Are you ready to have a conversation? We can go grab a beer.â | jerked my thumb toward the house. âSomething stronger, if you want.â
At first, Asher looked like he was going to take me up on the offer. Then he looked past me. His lip curled.
âOh, look,â he said with a sneer. âThe gangâs all here
