''Evelyn.''
''Evelyn?''
''Evelyn wake up!''
''Huh?'' I said, opening my eyes slightly and looking around, completely confused. Once again, I had fallen asleep while eating my breakfast and now I had a bunch of Fruit Loops scattered in different parts of my face. Again.
''I have work to get to, so stop being so lazy, and eat your breakfast so that we can leave already!'' my mum shouted at me before throwing another pillow behind her while trying to find her keys under the couch's pillows.
''Mum, I'm seventeen years old, making me old enough to be able to take care of myself. You don't need to give me a ride to school that's literally ten minutes away everyday.''
''I am just worried about your safety and want you to get there in the comfort of our car instead of walking''
''Our car that you never let me drive even though I have a license but you remember to let me ride in it when it's unnecessary to?''
I saw her roll her eyes at me and rush upstairs to go find- I don't even know what. I don't even know how we got to that conversation but all of the sudden we had found ourselves talking about how I'm ungrateful and I'm hiding stuff from her because apparently, I don't tell her enough.
Yeah, okay, let's pretend that I'm the one that doesn't talk instead of telling the truth that's that she hasn't had a normal conversation with me since last week, meaning that she's the one I don't know things about.
Or so she thinks. Two weeks ago, my mum's boss had called to ask if she was okay because apparently, she hadn't gone to work for two whole weeks. Now, it doesn't take a genius to put the pieces together.
The past two weeks, my mum has been dropping me off at school and then going to see the boyfriend that she doesn't know that I know that she has.
''If you really have work to get to, then leave now. Oh, while doing so, remember to call your boss and tell him that you'll be at work because apparently, he doesn't know you're there. The last time he saw you was some weeks ago.'' I said with the loudest voice I had, in order for her to hear me. I then quickly put my bowl in the sink, and, satisfied with my answer I got up and headed for my room.
''Wh-what do you mean?'' she stuttered as she casually walked in my room while I was changing. 'Oh, the irony. Last night she gave me a whole lecture about privacy and not even a day later she was invading mine.
''What part of it didn't you understand? Your boss called me yesterday and said that you haven't gone to work for weeks mum. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go change, so you can just go do whatever you do every day that apparently isn't work, and let me get to school. Ok?'' I said and put my keys in my backpack.
''How dare you talk to me like this?'' she yelled while turning me around to look at her.
''I dare talk to you like this the same way you dare remind me that you wish I was never born.''
Before she had the chance to say anything back, I almost ran to the bathroom and locked myself in there while I still could hold the tears back. I didn't want her to see me cry. I was ashamed to show weakness in front of my own mother.
Parents are the ones who are supposed to be the first people we go to when we're having any sort of problems or feel blue, but that was never the case in our household. My father left so soon I don't even remember him, meaning that I didn't even get a chance to actually get to know him, let alone run to him and cry, and my mother; well, she has her own problems. When my father left, she turned to alcohol. She would drink and drink until she got wasted and passed out on the couch while I went to sleep starving since I was only five meaning that my only source of food was her, and the last thing she wanted to do was deal with having to cook.
Then, came my older brother, Cole. He was ten at the time, perfectly capable of taking care of himself. He became my rock. Every time our mum would spend hours and hours drinking her time away, he would come to my room and play with me. After a while, we got rid of the hunger problem too. Cole found some random fast food delivery leaflets in mum's drawers and we'd eat that sometimes. We forced ourselves to learn how to make basic stuff so that we didn't live off of junk food until the situation got better.
After a year or so, It did. Or at least that's what we thought. Our mum started going back to work, she cut out the alcohol and went back to actually being our mum. With some exceptions that is. After what had happened, she never looked at me the same way. She put all the blame on her divorce on me, not blaming Cole once. To this day I never found out why, and it would kill me at first. Her hatred towards me made my days suck. I hated going home because I knew she was going to be there. Little did I know, that two years later, our lives would change for the better.
~Flashback~
I had just come home from school with Cole and grandma, laughing as we remembered how frightened Cole was when she told him she was taking away his Nintendo console if he didn't behave. I put my school bag down and ran towards the couch, rushing to find the remote control. It was Eve's time to shine. I grabbed my Patrick stuffie and trained my eyes solely on the TV.
I faintly heard my grandma say something in the backround, distracting me from watching my favorite show in the universe. ''Shh! It's Spongebob time!'' I said, pouting when Cole started laughing at me but turning my attention back to the TV anyway.
Minutes later, we heard the door open, revealing my mum. Just don't look at her. If you don't look at her, she might forget you exist and stop saying all the mean lies she says. I told myself and hugged my Patrick tighter. My mum greeted everyone and gave Cole a hug. ''Okay, everyone, I have a little something to tell you, so let's all gather around.'' She sounded excited, almost happy even.
Our grandma had left the room, looking at the opposite of what my mum looked like. Upset, sad, even a bit angry. ''Okay kids, so you both know that me and Mike have been together for a while now, and you know how much he loves you guys.'' She said with a smile. Mike was with mommy for around six months now, and he's awesome! He brings us toys and we go out together as a true family.
''Which brings us to;'' she paused. ''A little brother'' she said and caressed her belly where I guessed my little brother was now growing. ''We're going to have a little brother?!'' I said and started jumping up and down in excitement. ''That's right. There's going to be three of you now'' my mum said and hugged us both tightly.
~Present Time~
Jason brought Joy to all to our entire family, except for maybe one person. Mike. The minute he found out our mum was pregnant, he left her too. At the time they just told us that he just had to leave the country because of work, therefore he wouldn't see us In a while but years later we found out what the real reason was. When mum told him that she was pregnant, he instantly accused her of cheating on him and trying to trick him into thinking the baby was his. He had declared to her that he didn't want any kids, so her pregnancy was unplanned.
He told her to get an abortion, but she didn't want to. He talked about their baby as if it was an object she could just get rid of, making mum both sad and angry. When she told him she wasn't getting an abortion, he packed his things and left in the middle of the night.
I guess it has become a running theme, people leaving, giving no explanation as to why they had to do so. Funny. Well, at least he did, even if his reason was shitty. I let out a long sigh and wiped my eyes. My mum had already left and it was time for me to get to school.
No matter how hard I tried, I still couldn't stop thinking about the way mine and my mum's relationship currently was like. It was so weird for me to see how we were so close when I was little and now... now we can't even stand being in the same room as each other.
Why is that? Because she just couldn't handle the thought of her getting rejected. She couldn't handle the thought of doing something wrong and having to pay the price of what she did, so she did what many people would do. She blamed it on someone else.
The worst part is that no matter what I did, I couldn't change that. I couldn't make her show even the tiniest sign of love towards me. I closed my eyes and tried to calm myself down, but as I kept thinking, even more negative thoughts came to mind.
Just then, my phone started ringing, signaling Ivory, Bailey and Maya were waiting for me. We always had a meetup spot so that we could go to school together. Usually, my mum drove me there, but now that I had to walk there, I already knew that I was going to be late, considering I had woken up late that morning.
''I'm coming, you can tell Maya to stop worrying about being late for class, I'll be there,'' I told Bailey while shutting the door and practically running to find them.
~~~
''Miss Hayes, care to explain why you're fifteen minutes late?"' my history teacher said, looking at me up and down with that 'I'm superior' stare of hers. The entire class had turned to look at me, including my friends who looked at me, worried, since I had managed to get mud all over my shoes and the lower region of my jeans, due to some crazed idiot who should have their driving's license taken away, who drove straight into the mud-filled water, turning me into the mess that he had.
''I'm so sorry sir, it's just that my mum's car broke down on our way here and I ended up having to walk.'' I lied, trying to sound as convincing as possible.
''In that case, I'll late you slide, just make sure it doesn't happen again'' he said and went back to lecturing the class about something I had no interest in. I found my seat, opened my book and got ready for forty-five minutes of boredom.
