*READ THE AUTHOR'S NOTE AT THE END OF THE CHAPTER*
Narrator's POV
A few minutes had gone by since the call, and Evelyn had kept herself busy, making up scenarios in her head as to what excuse she'd use to get out of the house and have it be convincing enough for him not to realize where she wanted to go. Thinking about it, want is a strong word as there was no way in hell that she wanted to be there. Like Aiden had said, she just had to get this over with.
No excuse was good enough, and even if it was, she was sure he'd see her knock next door and get pissed and try to kill her etc etc. She sighed, maybe if she threw the shirt through her window to his window and he did the same, they'd get the job done and wouldn't even have to face each other. Brilliant. Just as she opened her phone to text him, a knock interrupted her. "Come in" she spoke, reluctant, hoping it was Jason on the other side of the door. To her dismay, it was Cole, who seemed oddly in a good mood.
"Mom asked me to get some stuff from the store, so I guess that's what I'm doing now. Wanna come with?" he asked and Evelyn's eyes lit up. "Yes!" she thought, this was her chance to escape. "Yes?" Cole asked, he surely didn't expect her to be this enthusiastic about the store. "Huh? Oh, no, no I just remembered I don't have math tomorrow so that's a win for me. Yay!" she tried to cover it up, looking away from him. He wasn't supposed to hear that, she didn't even realize it had slipped her tongue. Stupid she thought. "So are you coming or what?" he asked again, boredom lacing his words as his patience was running thin. "Sorry, no, I need to get this project finished. Think you'll be okay on your own over there?" she teased him.
"Ha-ha, very funny. Alright, I'm heading out, be good" he emphasized on the last word and she simply nodded, pretending to shuffle through books to find something. The minute she heard the front door shut and the car's engine start, it was showtime. She quickly got dressed, went over to Jason's room to tell him she was leaving and to call her if anything happened and left a note on the table for her mom or Cole, saying she was going to Bailey's, before texting Bailey to tell her that if anyone asks, they're together.
Lastly, she grabbed the hoodie that was resting comfortably on her chair, feeling glad that she would finally give it back to its owner, as she remembered everything she had to go through because of it. Reaching his front door, she took a deep breath and lifted her hand to knock, but was almost made to fall forward as the door suddenly opened before she could get to knock.
"Did you get lost on the way?" she heard his cold voice, his eyes hostile, it was like she was looking at a stranger. Little did she know it felt strange to him too, to be speaking to her like that and he only hoped his act would be good enough to be believable. "I told you, I had to get past Cole. Now, where's my shirt?" She got straight to the point, her attitude matching his, and one side of him was glad that she was getting annoyed since it meant his plan was working. The other though, God only knew how many times it had replayed the kiss, her presence only making it unable to forget it.
Nonetheless, he smirked "Not yet, Hayes, you and I need to have a little chat first" Evelyn thought the smirk meant that some of his playfulness had remained in tact and that he was breaking his shell as time went by, but she quickly realized that his tone of voice, stance and smirk had nothing playful. His seriousness was almost sinister. "And why would I want to do that with you?" she crossed her arms over her chest, narrowing her eyes. Aiden chuckled and took a step closer to her before almost whispering "Honey, I don't care about what you want. Come inside, or don't." and just like that, he turned his back to her and walked inside the house, leaving the door open for her to close.
Evelyn was fuming, she wanted to put his head between the door and its frame and shut it so many times that it would break. His head, not the door. She grunted, frustrated and for a moment she considered throwing the hoodie inside, closing the door, and going home, but something, that not even she could identify made her walk in. Aiden was sat in one of the high stools they had in his kitchen, typing away on his phone. He motioned for her to sit, but she didn't want to. "Just say what you want to say already I don't have all day"
"Linsday told me why you guys had that fight" he spoke and locked his gaze on her as she spoke "So she told you she's a stuck up, overly aggressive psycho then?" she frowned, and her words only made Aiden laugh "Hm, I don't remember... maybe it was after she told me about how whipped you are for me, so I had lost all interest already".
Evelyn's eyes narrowed and she felt her insides turn with anger. Oh, how she wished she was stronger so that she could beat this fool with her bare hands. For a second, embarrassment coursed through her, but it was quickly covered by anger again as she realized the pure nerve he had to be talking to her like that. "Oh, please, don't flutter yourself Black, there's nothing on you that I could ever like" she fired back.
"Is that why you and Bailey were making up scenarios about me fucking you, then?" he smirked, clearly enjoying the position he had her in. Before she could get to react, he spoke again, playing with her "Or why you couldn't keep yourself from telling her all the juicy details of the time when you almost begged me to make out with you?"
"You self centered little bastard, If I could just beat you to shreds right now, I so would. You just love feeling like everything is about you, don't you? Of course you would think everyone is attracted to you, you son of a-"
"Nope, no one said everyone Eve, we're only talking about you here" He interrupted her, his stance was so relaxed and confident that her urges to hit him with a frying pan were getting more and more intense by the second. He wasn't planning on taking things too far today, but seeing her all hot and bothered -though in his mind he would much rather make her hot else wise- by what he was saying was just too entertaining for him.
"As I said, I wouldn't be into you even if someone brainwashed me to be so don't stroke your ego too much. As for Bailey, I didn't tell her anything about nothing, she was the one who found out what happened on her own, but even if I had talked to her about it, it would've been none of your business because she's my friend and I can tell her whatever I want"
"Yeah, yeah got that, I just wanted to make sure it was clear to you that there really is nothing to talk about regarding that night, since it was just a meaningless, silly little makeout" Aiden got up, pleased with his work and took a seat on the couch, resting his arms on its back and smirking.
"Are you sure that's all it was to you Aiden? Are you? Because last time I checked you were begging me to remember it when we were on that balcony at the mall" Evelyn followed him, not bothering to take a seat. She just stood in front of him, hands crossed over her chest. She could tell he was enjoying this, being his usual cocky self, and she wasn't having it, even less so when he laughed "Oh, that? I was just wanting you to remember to make sure you knew that you were the one that started the whole thing, I don't want you thinking I took advantage of you there"
He was unbelievable "Oh, but I think you did" she smiled, sweetly, making him frown "What do you mean?" he searched every corner of his brain for evidence that backed up what she was saying, but he didn't find anything. "I was drunk, right? And I did something really stupid here by initiating that kiss. But, my question, my dear Aiden is why did you not stop it?" that made his smirk drop. 'Why did you not stop it?' that question replayed in his brain, the answer obvious; Because I've been in love with you this whole time but I can't show it because I don't want you to die? Yeah, can't say that.
"Clearly you don't remember the whole thing then. I tried to stop it, and you almost burst out crying, you should've seen how you were acting! I only let you do it so that you'd calm down" his cockiness was back on, even though it was only on the surface. Evelyn scoffed "So you're telling me that you only did for me, that it meant absolutely nothing to you" she found herself saying, a little more persistent than she wanted to sound, catching her self off guard. Why did she care so much about whether or not the kiss meant something to him? She shook her head, get yourself in check, she thought. It's only to prove a point.
Aiden laughed "Me? Why would it mean anything to me, I have a girl for fuck's sake" He leaned back on the couch once again, acting like the biggest asshole and desperately wanting her to leave so that he could drink his ass of until he forgot about her. She wished for that too. She hated him right at that moment, he felt like a stranger to her, and the house she used to feel as her own now felt cold, hostile. The only thing she was longing for now was to get her shirt and go home where she could scream and hit her pillows until all the anger she was feeling went away.
"Oh, right, of course! How could I forget about you being in a relationship with such a remarkable person, with such good morals and class that she sneaks into schools to beat up underage students! Aw, good for you, Aiden, I'm so unbelievably happy for you! But of course, who else could you be dating" her words were filled with irony, her anger radiating off of her, and she could guess that her face had probably turned red, this time not from embarrassment.
Now this had hit a soft spot for him. Equally as fuming as she was, he got up as well, walking towards her "You sound just like your brother! But of course, y'all live in the same house, the stupidity would be passed down to you at some point" Evelyn opened her mouth to speak but closed it again, trying to find the right words to espress how she was feeling. "I-I don't even know why I'm here anymore, trying to have a conversation with you, when you don't even know how to do that, you uncivilized worm!"
"You don't know why you're here? Please, let me tell you then, it's because you're so fucking into me and but you don't dare admit it! Not to me, not to your own fucking self, not to anyone, because that's exactly the type of person you are and guess what that's not going to get you anywhere, sweetie"
"I'm into you? Who the hell do you think you are? Damn, your ego is over the roof, isn't it?" she laughed "Well, don't get too excited, honey, you're not even that good looking"
"You're the one to talk? You had a fucking cat fight with my girlfriend for me"Â Â he inched closer to her, not backing down for even a second. "We didn't fight for you, dumbass, we fought because of you and that chick's low IQ" she fired back, not having it with his crap.
"Don't talk about her like that, plus you're not the brightest either" He couldn't believe his words, defending Lindsay and putting down his best friend like that, but if It made her step away from him he was willing to do it. "You know what, I agree, considering I was stupid enough to think you were my friend when you went and sold me out!" she was now yelling, unable to contain herself, making him raise his voice as well.
"How dare you fucking say that when I did everything in my fucking power to protect your ass? How fucking ungrateful are you to say shit like that?" His blood was boiling, for once during their conversation he felt what he was telling her, genuine anger rolling off of him.
"You keep saying that over and over and over, can you not understand that that's not enough for you to be in my life again? How am I going to be your friend when you treat me the way you do?" Frustration was evident in Evelyn's voice, all she wanted to do was pull her hair out of its roots. Or his, both worked.
"You can't be my friend, that's the thing. There can't be friendship between us when you're into me" he stated like it was the most obvious thing in the world. "I'm not going to have this conversation with you again, you're out of your mind"
"Of course you won't have it, all you do is avoid it because I'm telling you the truth and you don't want to accept it" he laughed when in reality he wanted to scream. "You wanna talk about truth? Let's talk then. Let's talk about how I kissed you and not only did you kiss me back but you couldn't get your hands off me"
"I couldn't get my hands off you? You were about to ride me for fuck's sake, if I hadn't stopped you lord knows where you would've taken things!"
Both of them were now just fighting for dominance in the argument, neither of them backing down for a moment as both wanted to prove they were right. The result; disastrous.
"I would never want such a thing from you! You know what, I'm done! Take your rag too, I don't want to have anything of yours, I don't even know why I wanted you to come back, my life was fine without you in it! All you have done since you came here is make a mess! I regret all the time I lost being sad and wishing you'd come back. I wish you had never come back"
Evelyn spit out, her words laced with poison, before slamming the hoodie on the top of the couch and turning her back to him. She reached for the door knob and took a step to walk out, but Aiden stopped her, grabbing her by the arm and pulling her back close to him, their faces inches away "Wanna say that again?" he threatened, but she wasn't affected "Wanna hear it again? Then sure thing, I will. I ain't scared of you" she smirked and he raised his chin, licking his lips "Oh, you should be" was the last thing he said before pulling her closer, their lips almost touching.
Is he going to kiss me? And why do I want him to? Evelyn thought to herself, closing her eyes, her lips parted. He closed his eyes as well, he was so fucked for her. Their lips barely touched and Evelyn felt her knees weaken, she was glad that he had sneaked his hand around her waist, she would've fallen if not. He inched closer to her to kiss her properly but she backed her head "Stop teasing" he playfully warned, but she just giggled and smirked. Wanting to feel her close, he put his hand in the back of her neck to stop her from moving again, and, more desperate now, his lips touched-.
"I forgot my-" Their lips had barely touched when Catherine walked in, the sound of the door slamming making them pull away. Aiden scratched the back of his head. Evelyn didn't dare speak, she just looked at the ground, utterly embarrassed. How could she have let this happen? Well, almost happen anyway? She couldn't take her eyes off her shoes, she could feel the heat traveling to her cheeks and the last thing she wanted was for Aiden, or Catherine, to see her blushing. "-Oh, Evelyn, honey, hi! I'm so sorry I didn't know- I- I'll just get my keys and I'll be on my way, don't be bothered by me, I'm not even here, you can- Um, yeah, I should stop, I'm sorry" Catherine rumbled, her excitement over the roof as she realized what was happening.
"Actually, I was just leaving so no worries " Evelyn spoke and grabbed her shirt "It was nice seeing you dear" Catherine waved, a huge smile on her face. Evelyn agreed with her and turned to walk out "I'll walk you home" Aiden offered but Evelyn declined. "No, it's okay, there's no need. I'll see you around" she said and walked out, almost tripping on her own feet, she needed to get home as quickly as possible.
Aiden stayed there frozen, looking at her as she walked inside her house, before closing the door and resting his forehead against it. "So..." Catherine started, a smirk on her face. He turned around, laying against the door "Don't start" he muttered, walking towards his room and away from her "Alright, alright" she let him slide, but couldn't hide her smile. She knew what he was doing was wrong considering he had a girlfriend and she didn't raise her son to be a cheater, but she thought that if he and Evelyn got together, there was hope for him to put his life back in track.
Evelyn almost ran inside her house, closing the door behind her and letting out a breath she didn't know she was holding. Her eyes widened when she saw her mom and Jason sitting in the living room, watching TV, her eyes scanning the room for Cole, who, thankfully for her wasn't home. Being too absorbed by what they were watching neither of them said a word to her, and she took that as her opportunity to run to her room. She closed the door behind her and examined her shirt, bringing it close to her to smell it. Stupid Aiden with his stupid smell on my stupid shirt, she thought.
She dumped the shirt somewhere in the room and fell on her bed, shoving her face on a pillow. She didn't know what had taken over her in that moment when she was going to let him kiss her. He was a dumb piece of crap, that's all he was and she knew it, so why did she feel like this? Why did the fact that he was so close to her make her feel all types of butterflies? I wasn't going to let him kiss me, I was just testing him to prove a point, she thought, and didn't even convince her own self.
Aiden walked into his room as well, throwing the hoodie on his bed. He took off the shirt he was wearing and took hold of the hoodie, putting it on, before lying on his bed. Her scent instantly filled the atmosphere, making him run a hand through his face. His thoughts were a mess, wondering how in the world he had gotten himself in such a situation. His plan of pushing Evelyn away clearly wasn't working as he couldn't help himself when he was around her. He felt so stupid, he shouldn't be with Lindsay, he should be with her, but that simply felt impossible.
All that could only mean one thing; it was time for a change of plans.
