Evelyn's POV
My eyelids fluttered open slowly, almost not wanting to comply with my brain as I felt so comfortable in the warmth of the bed that my limbs were almost too relaxed. The dream I had the night before had almost ruined my sleep completely, but I was glad I managed to get some sleep after all.
Unlike most mornings, an amazing warmth hugged my body, almost feeling like someone was actually hugging me. Feeling my neck sore, I snuggled against the pillow to find a better spot, suddenly realizing how hard it was. I took a deep breath in and a strong yet known scent filled my nostrils. Hold on a second.
I slowly titled my head up, the realization coming to my brain that it wasn't just the covers that were hugging my body, but Aiden's arms. I looked up at him, meeting his eyes, as he had also woken up. "Good morning" he murmured, voice still raspy and deep from sleep.
I jolted up, confused and startled "When did you get here" I asked him, and he rolled his eyes, laughing. "This is my house Hayes, so technically speaking I should be the one asking that question" he replied, and the frown on my face intensified. I looked around, being greeted by metal band posters and overall darkness. This was indeed his room.
Aiden sat up, running his hands through his hair, and yawned. "Do you really not remember anything from last night? 'Cause I'm definitely not repeating myself, you only get that show once" he said. My eyes wandered around before my gaze fell on the file that was sitting on his desk. Cole's face popped in my brain, along with bits of the conversation.
"So it wasn't just a nightmare?" I said, disappointed -but not surprised- that this was my reality. Aiden shook his head before getting up to go to the bathroom, but not before telling me to think about what I wanted for breakfast. My stomach was growling but as hungry as I felt, I was pretty sure my system couldn't process food.
I turned on my phone to check the time, only to find... 47 missed calls and 70 texts from Bryan? As expected, all of the texts were about how worried he was that I was replying to him and others were begging me to call him in the morning.
Bryan's POV
I was way over the speed limit and very glad that it was still early in the morning and not many people were on the road, because with how blurry my thoughts were I was sure I would most likely cause an accident.
I was racing to Evelyn's house, trying to keep my head out of the worst. I told myself I'd be patient and wait for them to talk, she would for sure text me back at some point. But hours after hours were going by and no texts came in. I didn't trust the dude the slightest, and I couldn't wait until I saw her again, just to make sure she was okay.
I didn't think he was crazy enough to lay a hand on her, but I was sure he was able to damage her verbally and I wasn't having it. We were just getting started, I wasn't going to let the notorious Aiden Black -all irony intended- ruin this.
I finally reached their driveway and parked my car outside, not even caring that it was way too early in the morning and I might have woken up half the neighborhood, nor that I would probably have to face her brother.
My feet were moving on their own accord and before I knew it I was knocking on the door. A very confused and tired Cole was on the other side. "Can I help you?" he asked, and I instantly knew he wasn't in his best mood. Offering him a weak smile to ease the tension, I spoke "I'm Evelyn's friend, Bryan?" I said but it came out more like a question. He frowned, looking through his brain for information that matched with my name but it quickly seemed like nothing came up.
Regardless, he pretended it did. "Oh, right, sorry, I haven't woken up properly. Come in" he said, making some space for me to walk inside before closing the door behind me. "Are you here for Evelyn?" he asked and I nodded "I am, actually. Is she up?" I asked and he shrugged. "Not sure, she usually wakes up early but today it seems she's sleeping in."
I nodded, looking around the room nervously. I tried to calm myself. I wasn't doing anything wrong, nor was I Aiden, so, so far 10/10. "You don't have to wake her, I can just come by another time" I said, but he shook his head. "No, if you guys had plans it wouldn't be right to leave you hanging." he said, turning to walk towards the staircase.
The truth was we definitely didn't have plans nor was she expecting me, but I chose to leave that part out as I was already in a difficult position.
Cole knocked on her door twice, an awkward silence falling between us as we waited for her response. We waited, but it never came. "She's a deep sleeper, huh?" I asked, trying to ease up the atmosphere. He nodded, chuckling. "Wakey wakey Evelyn. Your friend's here" he said and I put my hands in my pockets, looking away.
Moments passed and once again, we got no answer. My paranoia was starting to get the best of me, I only hoped nothing bad had happened to her. "Evelyn, if you aren't dressed speak up now, because I'm coming in." Cole said, before opening the door and walking in. I looked around the room, looking for any signs of Evelyn, but she was nowhere to be found.
My brain was racing, thinking about where she could possibly be, and one name popped up. Black. I was fighting in a dilemma about whether or not I should tell him, but seeing how worried he was and remembering how much I would love seeing him kick Aiden's ass, I said fuck it.
"Where the hell is she?" Cole said, frustrated as he was manically looking through the room in a desperate attempt to find her. "Cole" I stopped him. "I think I know where she is." I said and he ran towards me. "You know? Then why the hell didn't you say so already?" he said, looking at me expectedly as he waited for my response.
"I think she's at Aiden's" I said. The minute the words left my mouth I could see the anger coursing through him, his muscles tensing up immediately. "What did you say?" he asked, his voice low. "I think-" "-No, I heard you. I can't fucking believe this" he said, pushing me out of the way and going down the stairs at such a fast pace that I thought he was going to fall over.
I barely got a chance to move after him as he stormed outside, the door banging against the wall as he did.
Evelyn's POV
"What sane person does?" Aiden replied to my statement that only a none-sane person would drink their coffee without adding sugar. "You're just plain crazy" I said, as he left the coffee mug in front of me, adding a teaspoon of sugar as I told him to, a smirk on his face. "Is that enough, miss, or should I add more?" he teased me and I stuck out my tongue, mocking him.
"So, princess, what do you-"
His words were interrupted when the sounds of loud knocking were heard from the other side of the door. Aiden frowned, checking the time. "Who the hell is here so early?" he asked and I pursed my lips together, looking at my phone. "I think I have a few guesses." I said, before the knocking got louder. "Evelyn!" I heard Bryan's voice.
"Oh, hell no. The fuck's he doing here again?" he said, irritated before leaving his mug on the counter and walking to the other side of the counter. I grabbed his arm, stopping him. "Where are you going?" I asked, already panicking. "Outside, to tell him to get the fuck away from my house?" he stated as if it was the most obvious thing on the planet.
"Um, how about no?" I said, my grip on his arm getting tighter, and he seemed to notice because he was looking between that and me. He took my hand in his and placed a kiss on it. "Trust me. Everything's going to be okay, it's just him" he said. I sighed, head buzzing from the unexpected gesture. "Please don't start anything now" I said and he nodded.
"Do you promise?" I asked, eyes locking with his. "I promise, now can I go?" he said, as the knocking got more persistent. I nodded, and with that, he was gone. He opened the door and walked out, closing it behind me. Great. Now I had all the freedom in the world to panic on my own.
Aiden's POV
I closed the door behind me and leaned on it, my hands crossed over my chest. In front of me stood a very worried Bryan and a raging... Cole? "Mind telling me why you're trying to knock my door over at 9 in the damn morning?" I asked, and that seemed to be enough for them to go nuts.
"Are you seriously asking that?" they both said, making me want to bust out laughing. A smirk remained on my face, the sight was just too entertaining for me.
"What the hell are you doing with my sister?" Cole jumped straight into it, grabbing me by the collar. No surprises. "Listen Cole, this is getting tiring, don't you think? She obviously enjoys spending time with me, and I do too so why don't you just let us be" I said, removing his hands from my shirt, while Bryan stood close to us "Well of course you enjoy 'time' with her and she thinks she does too because you've got her falling for everything that comes out of your damn mouth" he yelled at me.
"Guys, guys, guys... I feel like there's a group attack going on towards me and to be honest I'm feeling very hurt. So why don't we all take a few breaths together" I said, my words having only the opposite effect, just like I wanted.
Cole was raging, and I was sure he was going to burst any moment now. See, Eve, I'm not the one starting a scene here.
"I'm not going to sit here and listen to your bullshit, Black, where the fuck is my sister?" he said, getting dangerously close to me, his pace stopped by Bryan, who put a hand on his shoulder to push him back.
"Well since you both are here I'm guessing she's inside" I said, my smirk getting more and more noticeable by the second, fact that was driving both of them even more nuts.
"That's it, step the fuck aside, I'm going in" he said, trying to push me out of the way, but I stopped him. "I'll go get her, and you'll wait here like a good boy you are" I said, leaving just in time for his rage fit.
I closed the door behind me, finding Evelyn pacing back and forth in the room, chewing on her nails. "So, um, Cole and Bryan are outside and they want to talk to you" I laid it out on her all at once. She was going to panic either way, there was no use for sugarcoating shit.
Her mouth fell open, hands gripping on my shoulders as if her life depended on them. "We're going to jump from your window to my window and escape from my house" she said, making me laugh. "No one's escaping, Eve, we'll go outside and talk to them. That's all"
I barely had time to finish my sentence when my phone vibrated in my pocket. I fished it out, checking the screen.
Lindsay:
Gmorning babe, im coming over. Want coffee?
My eyes widened when my brain processed the words on the screen, and I quickly showed the text to Evelyn when she looked at me questioningly. "Can we panic now?" she asked, and I nodded, looking for the nearest surface on which I could bang my head onto.
"Oh, so now you're panicking, I didn't see you panicking when it was just cOLE AND bRYAN" she mocked me and I fisted my hair "It's not the time to make fun of me Evelyn" I said and tried to think of anything that we could do to save this situation.
"Okay, we're going to go out there and talk to them, and then we'll see what we'll see what happens about the other situation" I said and she nodded. Five more minutes were spent, during which she tried to convince me to go out there alone, but of course that was a no-go for me.
I let her think she convinced me, and let her walk out, but I followed shortly, closing the door behind us.
The minute they laid eyes on her, Prince charming, aka Bryan put his hands on her shoulders and scanned her up and down. "Are you okay? I got so worried, why weren't you answering my calls?" he asked her and I resisted the urge to yawn. Fucking soap opera rip-off.
"I was asleep, Bryan, and my phone was silenced" she replied, her voice weak. "What were you doing at his house anyway? I thought you were done with lying to me Evelyn" Cole jumped in, crossing his hands over his chest. What a fucking hypocrite, talking to Evelyn about lying when his entire life is straight fiction.
Evelyn seemed to be thinking the same thing. "You're not my father, Cole. If I want to be here, I will be." she said, enraging both of them even more. I still couldn't tell what Bryan's deal was, and why all of the sudden he thought he could play bodyguard.
Just as Cole was ready to react, our lovely interaction was cut short by no other than my mother. "Why hello! Are we having a patio get-together?" she asked. "Not really, the boys were just leaving anyway. Right guys?" I asked, knowing Cole wouldn't do shit.
"Actually, Evelyn was coming too, right Eve?" he asked her, shooting a gaze to let her know she couldn't do otherwise. "Actually, Evelyn was invited for breakfast, so she was coming with us" I said, putting my hand in hers. She didn't look at me, but I could still see the rosey color her cheeks got at the gesture.
"We'll talk later" he said, and I rolled my eyes. They finally left, and now Catherine, Evelyn and I were walking back inside. "I don't know what you two have in mind, but I only came back to pick up a few things and I'll be on my way" she said, shooting us a mischievous smile. The blushing on Evelyn's face got even more obvious, making a smile form on my own before I could stop it.
Catherine was quick to leave, and I was glad about it because according to my calculations, Lindsay should be here any moment. I tried calling her to tell her I wasn't home, but I got no reply, fact that probably meant she was driving, therefore we only had a few moments to figure out what we were going to do.
She couldn't find Evelyn here, not in a million years was that a scenario I would let happen, but could also sense how much she dreaded going home and there was no way I'd let her go back with Cole waiting to lecture her.
"We have a problem" we both said at the same time, and she giggled, a sound almost too pleasant for my ears. "Lindsay's on her way and if she finds you here.. it won't be pretty." I said, rubbing the back of my neck. I hated to have to do this, she didn't deserve to be treated like this and need to be hidden.
"I know. I can just go to Bailey's if she's-" her sentence was cut short by the sound of a car pulling up on my driveway. Both our eyes widened when we realized who the owner was. "What do we do?" she asked, her panic intensifying when the doorbell was heard. "Go to Catherine's room" I told her and she nodded, storming off.
I took a deep breath and calmed my stance, trying to play it cool, as if I didn't almost have a stroke twice, and opened the door. "Good morning babe" Lindsay greeted me, leaning in for a kiss. I turned my head before she reached my lips, letting her kiss my cheek instead.
She looked at me questioningly, crossing her arms over her chest. "Do you not want me to kiss you, Aidie?" she asked, using the hideous nickname she had picked out for me. "I haven't brushed my teeth yet, love" I reassured her, using the first excuse that came in mind.
"Did you sleep well?" she asked, a salty tone lacing her words. There we go. "Slept just fine. You?" she took a seat on the couch, crossing one designer-covered leg over the other, and playing with her nails. I took a seat next to her, trying to be as affectionate as I could to help with the outburst.
"That's nice, must've been real tired not to answer your phone" she said and the blood froze in my body. "Yeah, I was helping Catherine with stuff around the house" I said, running my hand up and down her arm, in an attempt to get her mind off of where I was sure it was going.
"So what's the plan for today? You coming over to my place?" she asked, her nail brushing over my cheek. I knew I'd have to say yes unless I had a really good excuse not to go, but I didn't want Evelyn to hear me say the words. "Of course" I said, and saw a smirk play on her lips.
She motioned for me to get closer and opened her mouth to speak, her finger on my chin, when we heard a loud noise coming from one of the rooms. That's stroke number three on the way. "What was that?" she asked, backing away from me. "The air, probably. Catherine keeps the windows open" I brushed it off. Damn Evelyn and her clumsiness which I otherwise would find cute but right now it's about to get us killed.
"Open windows, huh..." she said and got up, heading towards Catherine's room. I followed suitly "No one would try to break in so early, babe, calm down" I said, chuckling, but I knew for a fact that a break-in was the last thing she was worried about.
She reached the door knob and put a finger against her lips, signaling for me to be quiet, and I swear I was about to lose my shit. On the outside I bet I looked calm as ever, hands in my pockets, mocking her behavior, but on the inside I wanted to pull my hair so hard the top of my head just popped off.
With a swift motion she got in the room, looking like she just solved the biggest mystery of the century, and I held my breath, waiting for the outburst.
It never came.
"You were right" was all she said, before walking away. "The window was left open". I frowned, almost running into the... empty room. I looked under the bed, the desk, inside the closet, and Evelyn was nowhere to be found. My eyes fell on the open window. It wasn't very high up from the ground, but remembering Evelyn's fear of heights, that couldn't have ended well.
I pulled the curtains to the side and stuck my head out of the window, looking for signs of limbs or blood. "Help" I heard a whisper, and almost fell straight down. I looked to the right and saw her, gripping on the wall with her eyes closed, breathing heavily. "Evelyn?!"
