(Cameron Ross---------------------->)
Caddie's POV:
I followed the strange boy through the nearly deserted halls.
Instead of talking, we shared mischievous smiles and snuck around the castle. Nox Haven was nothing I thought it would be like. I never expected to learn that magical creatures existed and that I was a part of the most powerful race. Originally, I had thought the school would be filled with rebellious teenagers that pierced every visible part of their body and crazy people who heard voices in their heads. From what I had seen Nox Haven was truly a school for special kids.
The mysterious boy slipped his large calloused hand into my petite one. Heat flooded to my cheeks when I realized I didn't mind having him close to me. Rationally I knew he wasn't holding my hand because he liked me, but I couldn't stop a small smile from forming on my face. We giggled throughout our journey as I nearly fell twice. It was nice to laugh with someone, I almost felt normal.
"And this the Nox Haven conservatory," his voiced boomed in the large glass room.
A toothy grin broke out onto my face as I basked in the rays of sunlight. Twisting vines and exotic plants made the conservatory look like a rain forest. A mixture of the earth's natural aroma and a floral fragrance attacked my senses as I ventured deeper into the jungle. I felt like I had taken a portal to another world, and since I was in Nox Haven I didn't doubt that it was possible. To my dismay, we left much earlier than I would have liked, but the boy insisted that there was one more stop we had to make. We darted down the hall, hoping to avoid any lingering teachers. Just when I thought we were safe I heard Keagan's voice resonate from down the hall. The boy clutched my hand and pulled me behind an unlocked door.
My two left feet tripped over the air as he spun me around. I teetered backward but two strong arms encased me in a vice-like grip before my head could collide with the floor. Without thinking about my actions I snuggled closer to my savior. My mind drifted to a peaceful place as I breathed in his masculine musk of evergreen forests and rich spices. My entire body must have gone red when I felt his hands snake around my waist pulling me into an intimate embrace. When the fog in my mind cleared I quickly stumbled away. I fell against a cold metal object that was mounted on the wall and the whole room illuminated. My cheeks heated up and I looked away quickly. The boy began to laugh.
"I don't see what's so funny," I said, utterly embarrassed. He saw that I wasn't laughing along and regained his composure.
"Nothing. It's just that I've never met a witch who's so jumpy," He said earnestly.
I looked at him more closely this time; he didn't look like any of the warlocks I had seen so far. I thought of Keagan's clean-cut look and compared it to this boy's dirty grunge vibe.
"Who are you?" I asked cautiously.
"I'm Cameron," He said. "But you can call me Cam." Cam had gotten distracted by something behind me and wondered off to find it. I followed him into the main part of the room, but I wasn't done with my interrogation.
"Why aren't you like the others?" I asked but then had gotten distracted by the room in front of me.
It seemed like we had stumbled upon heaven for bookworms. It was a large circular room with golden accents and enough books to build a ladder to the moon. Every level displayed a fresh new wave of books, and on the ground, several plush love seats and old-looking rugs decorated the room. Cam slowly walked into the middle of the room with an awed look on his face, and behind that, I swear I saw a hint of recognition.
"It all depends on which group of people you are referring to," He murmured and started towards the staircase that led to the books.
"So far I've only met witches and warlocks and you don't seem like their kind," I explained carefully.
He reached for the staircase, but it shocked him and he fell to the ground.
"Cam!"
I ran after him. He growled and flipped back onto his feet. His pupils were slitted again and I could feel the angry heat radiating off of him.
"You asked what other groups of people are in this school well I think you can figure out what I am," He said roughly and tried to calm down.
"You're a werewolf?" I tried.
I took his silence as a yes.
I looked around in fear as if a vampire was going to jump out and suck my blood or a zombie was going to fight me for my brain. I walked over to the case and laid my hand on the golden railing. When nothing happened, I looked back at Cam.
"It won't hurt you because you're a witch," Cameron explained. "Only witches and warlocks can read from the Magicry."
I guessed that the library at Nox Haven was called the Magicry. But after a while, the railing began to heat up, I pulled away before the shock came. I stared at my hand in puzzlement. Heidi said I was a witch, so why was I feeling defense effects of the Magicry? The door creaked open and a boy came in with determined footsteps. He stepped into the light and I was surprised to see that it was the blue-eyed boy. Once his eyes landed on Cam, his stare was cold.
"What do you think you're doing in here?" His voice boomed throughout the room.
Cam glared at him, "I found her wandering the halls. I guess you should tell your tour guides to make the tours more interesting. Then they wouldn't lose people along the way."
"Don't bring her into this." The blue eyed boy snarled. "Now leave before I bring in Lady Bose."
I was surprised to hear my aunt's name being used in such a manner. I didn't remember her saying anything about being titled.
"What does my aunt have to do with any of this?" I asked incredulously. Cam looked at me in shock, "You're Caddie?" He swore under his breath, backed away and disappeared into the shadows.
The other boy's expression softened as his attention turned to me. "Are you okay? He didn't hurt you, right?"
I nodded weakly as I finally got a good look at him. He was breathtakingly gorgeous. His blazing blue eyes were framed by thick dark lashes, they were the same color as his dark brown hair. He had high cheekbones and a sturdy jaw, I momentarily questioned whether he was a student or the Greek god Adonis. I shook my head and tried to regain my train of thought. What were we talking about? Did something happen?
The fog in my mind slowly lifted.
"Why would he have hurt me? We were just talking," I said, still in a dazed state of mind.
He closed his eyes briefly as if he had a headache before returning his piercing gaze to me.
"Werewolves are dangerous, Caddie. They're unstable and it doesn't take much for one of them to derail and destroy everything. Promise me you'll stay away from him."
He took my hands in his and gave me one of his heart melting looks. But I refused to crumble like a cookie in his hand. He could dazzle as many girls as he wanted, but I didn't enjoy acting like a hormonal teenager.
"Why should I promise you that? I don't even know you," I pulled my hands out of his grasp.
He took a step back and bowed before saying, "Prince Aleksander Volkov, at your service."
An audible gasp escaped my lips. Aleksander? As in the boy from my dreams. I wanted to believe it was a coincidence, but coincidences didn't at Nox Haven.
"Y-you're a prince?"
He nodded and gave me a coy smile, "There are three princes and three princesses in the magical community. And you have just met one Prince, it is quite an honor for you."
I started to laugh until I realized he was serious. I remembered the four other people that had watched me from the second landing. They all held themselves in the same aristocratic fashion. We broke off into an awkward silence. I had no idea what was considered 'proper' in the supernatural world. Somebody should write a handbook!
Would I get punished for questioning a royal's authority? I decided I was safe as long as he didn't say anything.
"What does my aunt have to do with any of this?" I asked out of nowhere.
Her pursed his lips and paused. "She doesn't have anything to do with it... yet. But I could get her involved."
The twisting feeling in my gut told me it wouldn't end well if she got involved. Yes, she was nice to me- but I was family. I didn't want her to throw a ball of fire at Cam for being friendly.
"Please, don't tell her. She doesn't need to know." I threw my divinity to the side and begged.
Aleksander gave me a cheeky grin and nudged my shoulder."I know that. Your secret is safe with me. You should know, Caddie, that if you ever need help, I'm here for you."
"Why, are you being so nice to me?" I asked.
Nobody was ever nice to me unless the my wanted something in return.
"You're a prince, you don't owe me anything,"
He took my hands in his and planted a soft kiss on my knuckles. Both my heart and my brain froze.
"My status means nothing when it comes to you. If you would allow it I would like to become friends."
My flush came back in full force once I picked up on his emotions; he was intrigued, amused and attracted? For some weird reason, he was attracted to me. Me? I was the dork that couldn't think of a rational response during conversation.
I had so many unanswered questions. Nancy Drew did not prepare for the mystery that was Nox Haven Academy.
