The next day Gwen woke up when she felt the heat of the sun against her cheeks. She rolled on her bed to grab her watch from the nightstand but ended up rolling too far and fell on the floor with a thud.
The sound made the other girls instantly wake up. The concern, however, slipped off their faces when their gaze landed on the girl on the floor. It wasn't the first time that it had happened and certainly not the last.
Atlas, who saw the girl and the floor, quickly ran up to her as fast as he could to see if she was okay. He went up to the girl and started licking her forehead. Gwen couldn't help but let out a giggle. "It's okay Atlas, I'm fine."
Gwen slowly stood up and went to the bathroom and went to take a cold shower and put on her uniform. Gwen didn't feel the need to wear her sweater or her robes as it was still a little hot outside.
Gwen picked up her brush and ran it through her hair as she walked out of the bathroom and into the dorm. She barely had the time to do that when one of her roommates, Ivy, sprinted into the bathroom after her.
Gwen sat on her bed and threw the brush beside her and started to braid her hair. "Wonder what's the rush with her," Gwen told the others referring to Ivy. They all shrugged simultaneously. She should have remembered that her roommates were cranky in the morning.
Gwen finished her braid in a matter of seconds, despite it reaching her lower back.
She grabbed the school bag and swung it over her shoulder and made sure that she had her wand in her pocket, and perfect badge pinned.
As soon as Gwen descended the staircase she looked around the common room to see if the twins or Lee were there but they were nowhere to be seen.
She did, however, see Roman Fitz, walk out of from the boy's dormitory and Gwen went up to talk to him. "Hey Ro, good morning! Are the twins and Lee still in the dorm?" Gwen asked the dark-haired boy as he was one of their roommates. Roman smiled at Gwen and shook his head.
"No, they all went down a couple of minutes ago. Said something about getting breakfast early." Gwen thanked the boy and left the Gryffindor Common room at a slow pace.
She had no hurry about anything. There was plenty of time until lessons began and knew that if she hurried she would have a higher risk of falling.
Gwen was in her own world that she forgot about the trick step on the moving staircase. Her right foot was stuck much to her shock and she tried to release her foot. When she finally did, she lost her balance and fell sideways.
"You okay?" Gwen raised her head from the floor and reclined to see who spoke to her.
In front of her, Gwen saw Dominic, Rachel and Celeste in front of her. They were three of the twelve first years that she had shown around yesterday. At that moment she ironically remembered warning them of said trick step and felt embarrassed.
Gwen stood up with the little of her remaining dignity. She gave the trio an awkward smile.
"Kids you should know that I, Gwen Hamilton, am one of the clumsiest people you'll ever meet. So if this happens again and you say to yourself 'what is wrong with her?' then you'd know exactly what is wrong with me."
Dominic, a boy with halo golden hair and green eyes, tried his best to hide his laughter but to no avail.
"Anyway, I better go. Good luck on your first day, I know that you'll do well. Bye!" Gwen hurried away from the three first years before she could humiliate herself even further.
When she entered the Great Hall for breakfast she found herself surrounded by the usual, lip-smacking smell of eggs, bacon, toast and even some delicious buttered croissants.
The twins and Lee were seated at the usual spot and were conversing with Ron, Harry and Hermione. Gwen sat down next to Lee and pounded her bag next to her and filled her plate with breakfast goods.
"The day barely started and I already fell twice. Twice! Once out of my bed and the other time because of that trick step in the stairs." Gwen continued to munch on her toast.
George stretched forward and handed Gwen a piece of folded paper. She single handily unfolded the piece of paper and saw
that it was her timetable.
Gwen took a quick glance at it and then folded it back again. Gwen went to continue eating but this time she was interrupted by Percy.
"Gwendolyn, Lee, here are your timetables for your prefect duties. Make sure that you're always there on time." Percy warned, throwing shade at the fact that she had arrived late to her meeting.
Gwen continued to chew as she saluted Percy with her free hand. Percy nodded and then left. Once Gwen was finished she dusted the crumbs off her hands and opened to see the timetable.
She scanned through the contents quickly and went to place it in her bag before Lee snatched it out of her hands.
"Hey!" Gwen exclaimed as she went to grab it. Lee swatted her hands away and continued to read it and compared his and hers. "So you've got duties every day except Tuesday and Friday." Gwen went to grab at it again causing Lee to raise it above his head to prevent her from taking it.
"Good, you'll have Friday night free for pranks and partying," Fred stated as he ate a piece of bacon. Gwen grimaced at him.
"Don't talk with food in your mouth, it's disgusting." Gwen had to go as far as standing up on the bench for a better attempt at getting it back.
Gwen gave up on trying and she sat down instead. She started to fix the loose strands of hair that escaped her braid during her failed attempts.
Lee's lips pursued into a tight 'O'. "Ooh... Looks like these prefect duties won't be such a pain in the arse after all." He told the twins in a teasing tone.
The twins looked at each other and Fred turned to look at Gwen with one raised eyebrow. "What? They're prefect duties, there's no way that they can be enjoyable."
"Oh, yes they can. Gwen here has all of her prefect duties with the one and only, Cedric Diggorayyy!" Lee stated as he wiggled his eyebrows at the bashful girl. Gwen grabbed a piece of toast and threw it at Lee's head in retaliation.
"First of all, it's Diggory, not Diggorayyy! And second, who is your partner then?" Gwen asked. This time it was Lee's turn to redden.
"Oh yeah. I know who she is now. It's Olivia Kennedayyy!" Lee gave Gwen a glare to which Gwen replied with an innocent smile.
Lee didn't say anything else about Cedric and Gwen felt relieved but Fred and George weren't going to just let it slide. "Wait! You like Cedric?" George asked as he leaned his head on the palms of his hands in amusement.
"What? I don't like Cedric. I mean I like him as in he's a nice guy, but that's all." Gwen admitted. She grabbed a goblet of apple juice and tried to hide her face with it, hoping to not give anything away.
George nodded. "Oh really? Okay then. Speaking of Cedric, he's coming here."
Gwen quickly placed her goblet down and started to fix the hair out of her face. Fred looked at her exasperatedly but didn't say anything else.
Cedric approached the table and smiled at the Gryffindors yet his gaze instantly fell on the nervous girl.
"Morning Lyn. You look great today." Cedric told the girl who was trying hard to suppress her smile to avoid looking too excited.
The three boys gave Gwen a weird look, but Gwen barely noticed them.
"Uh, thanks. You look good too." Gwen replied and felt stupid when she realized what she said. Lee tried his best to cover his snort, but Gwen kicked him under the table.
"Thank you. I just got the prefect timetable and noticed that we were paired up together and we have our first session tonight. So, I'll pick you up at your common room if that's alright with you?" Cedric asked while rubbing the back of his neck.
Gwen nodded, a bit too eager. "Yes, that's great, fantastic even. See you later!" Cedric smiled at the girl before making his way back to his table.
"You look good too! Great! Fantastic even!" Fred mocked Gwen with a high pitched voice when Cedric was out of hearing range.
"If you're done making fun of me, we have to go to the dungeons for double potions," Gwen stated as she changed the subject. She grabbed her bag, swung it over her shoulder and refused to meet anyone's eyes.
Identical groans were heard from the three boys.
