The moment the door clicks shut, Finn sets down his tablet and slams me with his dark gaze.
I slip a hand into my pocket and pointedly avoid the question in his eyes.
Between Zane and Finn, the one who makes me wary is my adopted brother.
Zane is pure emotion. Itâs why heâs so good at the drums. He explodes in a mess of energy, feelings, and uncontrollable urges. The good, the bad, the ugly, it eventually comes roaring out of him until thereâs nothing left.
I know where my twin stands with just a look.
But Finn is controlled. Contained.
The only way to know what heâs thinking is if he tells you directly.
âWhat did you mean when you promised youâd find the culprit for her?â Finn asks.
I stalk to the fridge, open it wide and grab a beer. âI meant weâd find culprit for her.â I snap the tab and guzzle the drink. âI didnât mean Sol.â
âYou shouldnât have agreed to that in the first place. Itâs too risky,â Zane scolds me. His eyes are clear. A surprise given the amount of beers he drank before he hopped on his motorbike and took off last night.
Finn and I worried he wouldnât make it back in one piece but, around two a.m. he sauntered in, smelling like sex, perfume and anger. We didnât ask how he worked out his frustrations, but the truth came out pretty early.
His cheerleader of choice giddily posted a picture of him from behind.
Butt-naked.
Damn airhead had my brotherâs cheeks plastered all over Jinxâs app by morning.
Zane doesnât care.
But I do plan to have that airhead kicked off the cheerleading squad. If she doesnât understand that discretion is a must when she spends the night with one of us, then Iâll make it my mission to teach her that lesson.
âYou might have forgiven Cadence for taking a bat to everything in this room,â Finn says calmly. âBut that doesnât mean have.â
âYou have a problem?â I growl.
He lifts a shoulder in a careless shrug.
âFinnâs right. You got your pound of flesh from her. We agreed she paid her debt after giving up the goods.â Zane licks his lips. âWeâre square. But she doesnât belong in here after she disrespected our space.â
âEnough.â I lift a hand.
Finn draws one knee up and rests his long arm on top of it.
âWhy the hell are you so sensitive about her?â Zane accuses. âDoes she have something on you?â
My eyes slide over my twinâs.
âOr is there some kind of magic between her legs because if soââ
âCadence is my fiancée,â I say sharply.
Both of my brothers fall silent.
Zaneâs jaw is on the floor.
Finnâs eyes narrow to sharp slits.
I smile. Even though my brain is running on overdrive and thereâs a giant freaking wall between me and Cadence in a wedding dress, itâs still a mind-blowing occasion.
My fiancée.
Damn.
Itâs right. Itâs perfect.
âDid you fall and hit your head?â Zane stammers. âHow many fingers am I holding up?â
âItâs not a brain injury. Itâs the honest freaking truth.â
âDid you propose that night?â Finnâs eyes glint in the sunlight. âThe night you went over to her place?â
I nod.
âHuh.â He seems amused.
âHow are you so calm about this?â Zane shrieks. âThis idiot is talking about Marriage! Weâre barely eighteen.â
âItâs legal.â
âAnd sheâs not.â Zaneâs eyes narrow at me. âHave you thought of that? Sheâs seventeen.â
âIn Decemberââ
âItâs not December yet,â Zane huffs.
I donât mind him cutting me off. His reaction is expected.
Finn studies me. âThereâs more, isnât there?â
âMore? What more?â Zane squeezes his fingers over his temple and flops facedown in the couch. âI canât take more.â
âSit up. I need you paying attention for this.â I nudge him.
He snaps up, eyes narrowed. âWhy didnât you check with me? I could have hooked you up.â
âHooked me up with what?â
âYou wanted a challenge? You wanted inexperienced and wide-eyed? Easy. I could have had a line of virgins banging your door down. No marriage proposal needed.â
âIf the virgins are banging his door down, then it isnât necessarily a challenge,â Finn points out.
âAre you cracking jokes? Right now? Seriously?â
âNot a joke. Merely an observation.â
âWhen one of us does something stupid, we call each other out. Thatâs what you did for me. Why the hell does he get a pass?â
âHe said thereâs more,â Finn says simply.
Zane sucks in a deep breath, closes his eyes, and sits back down. âThis better be good, Dutch.â
I sit rigidly and run the words through my mind, wondering how Iâll deliver them. Thereâs no way to pretty this up.
Might as well tear off the band-aid.
âGran left her fortune to one of us,â I admit.
âDid I hear that right? Did you say âoneâ?â Zane arches a brow.
âJust one.â
âBiological?â Finn asks quietly.
I glance over. Thereâs a hint of uncertainty in his eyes. The first crack in his armor Iâve seen.
âDonât think so. The requirements are that the grandson is married and has a kid before a year is up. Thatâs it.â
âA kid?â Zaneâs eyebrows arch. âLike a human child?â
Finn looks disturbed. âA year?â
âThereâs more.â
Both of them look like theyâre bracing themselves.
âIf one of us canât fulfil the requirement⦠dad gets everything.â
âAbso-freaking-lutely .â Zane explodes from his seat.
Finn stares into the distance, running my words over in his brilliant mind. Finally, he glances up at me. âThe marriage to Miss Jamiesonâs mom. Dad chose her for a reason, didnât he?â
âTo fulfil the willâs requirement and to keep Zane away fromâ¦
with her daughter.â
Zane stops cold.
I give him a sympathetic look. âTwo birds. One stone.â
âMiss Jamieson wouldnât have married me even if I paid her.â
âWould you have to marry her though?â
He stares at the ground, saying nothing.
âThatâs why dadâs at Redwood. Heâs keeping an eye on us so we donât even dream of touching the inheritance.â
Thereâs a moment of silence as my brothers absorb what that means.
Our father is a damn psychopath.
Finnâs dark gaze meets mine. âTell me thereâs not more.â
âThatâs it.â I raise both hands to show that Iâm empty.
âWhat about you two?â Zane points a trembling finger. âWhy go after me?â
âWhat do you mean?â
âYou both have the tools to make a baby in a year. You could make freaking just to be safe â
âThatâs becauseâ¦â
âDad thinks I donât qualify as a son.â Finnâs words are subdued. He looks like he just got run over by a truck.
âWe donât know that,â I mutter.
Finn shakes his head, clearly unwilling to talk about it. âWhat about Cadence? Pictures of you and her are all over Jinxâs app. Even if dadâs not subscribed, just talking to a couple people will have them pointing to you two as a couple.â
I stiffen, already suspicious of Cadence being on dadâs radar. The fact that Finn thinks the same way is confirmation.
My brother studies me. âJinx mentioned that Cadence and dad are having secret talks after class. You think it was about this?â
âHow the hell is dad going to bring this up?â Zane mutters. ââHi, seventeen-year-old student. Iâll pay you a million dollars if you marry my son?ââ
âItâs not below him,â Finn says.
âNothingâs below him because heâs lower than dirt. But dad is smart. He wouldnât out himself like that.â Zane presses his lips together. âBesides, dad wouldnât need to pay a dime. Sheâd marry you for free.â
âShe marry me,â I say sharply.
âAre you going to kidnap her sister and threaten her?â
âOf course not.â If I touched her sister, Cadence would probably slit my neck in my sleep.
âAre you going to forge her signature on the court records?â
âNo.â
âThen itâs not happening.â
âIt is happening,â I say evenly. âSheâs family now.â I glance between them. âAnd I need you both to help me convince her of that.â
âYouâll need a miracle to convince that girl,â Zane mumbles.
Finn looks thoughtful. âCadence is stubborn. We did everything we could to get her out of Redwood, but she stuck through it all. And when we managed to kick her out, she came back. Getting her to marry you will be ten times harder than anything weâve done in the past.â
âWe donât have a choice,â I growl. âIâm not marrying anyone else. Unless you both want to sign up for a wife?â
My brothers shut their mouths.
âSince there are no other takers, my wedding to Cadence is a sure thing.â
âWhy donât you get her pregnant first and worry about marriage later?â Finn suggests.
My ears perk up.
Even Zane looks intrigued.
âMom didnât specify in what order it had to happen, did she?â
âNo.â
âIf someone like dad can qualify for the inheritance,â Zane mumbles, âthen I donât see why Dutch canât get started on the baby part before he signs the papers. It could work.â
âHaving a baby could be what convinces Cadence to marry you too,â Finn says.
âItâs an option.â I rub my chin. The thought of pumping Cadence full of my children gets my blood hot. I can already picture her, legs sprawled, mouth open, eyes seeing stars as I impregnate her with our child.
âBut sheâs going to hate you,â Finn says quietly.
His words shatter my vision. I glance at my brother.
Heâs staring at me with those eyes that see more than they say. âLying to her about Sol is one thing. But if you lie to her about thisâ¦â
âIt doesnât matter. She canât escape me.â
âWhat if she does?â
âIâll drag her back,â I growl, staring him down.
âIs that love?â Finn wonders.
It sounds like heâs thinking out loud rather than accusing me, but I still get defensive.
âWho gives a damn about love? Weâre talking about Arenât you terrified?â Zaneâs eyes bug. âThis isnât a dare. This isnât hooking up. This is marriage. This is being a father. Are you ready for all that?â
âI donât know.â
âWhat do you know then?â Finn inquires, his eyes flitting over me.
âI know that I want dad to lose something after what heâs done to us.â
Zane turns away, a vein bulging in his neck.
âI know that the moment I get married to Cadence, thatâs it for me. Iâm married for life.â
Zane looks surprised by that.
Finn doesnât.
âI know that sheâs important enough to me that Iâd die for her. And I know that when Iâm with her I feelâ¦â I inhale deeply. âI feel like that first time I stepped on stage with my guitar. Lightheaded. Eager. Alive.â
Finn turns to me. His eyes burn. âIâm in.â
My eyebrows shoot up.
âLetâs make Cadence your wife.â
Zane reluctantly walks over. âAnd letâs hope weâre more successful this time than when we tried to kick her out of Redwood.â
