Todd, Brian, Karl, and Peter were sitting on the sofa.
Maxine went to the vending machine at the entrance hall. Todd insisted on going with her but she disagreed. Fifteen seconds after she left, he made Karl follow her. Karl didnât object, since he was also thirsty.
Todd wasn't being overly protective â he wasn't usually like this with Maxine. However, they were in the enemyâs territory. Letting her alone was the last thing he wanted to do.
The only reason he wasnât there when Dominique Harris had the chance to talk to Maxine was because Headmaster Sky was talking to him and Brian. It was rude to walk out on the Headmaster when he was having his speech. Luckily, Mr. Cortez from the Vlad Institute faculty wanted to have a discussion with the Headmaster.
Todd was certain that he wouldn't allow Dominique Harris near Maxine again. Obviously, Harris brainwashed Maxine into thinking that he was sweet.
Todd scowled and bared his white teeth. Furious wasnât even the right word for what he was feeling for that insolent guy. He really wanted to obliterate Dominique Harris.
What else could have Harris said to Maxine?
Peter interrupted his thoughts.
âMax is rare, huh?â he said, his eyes looking far away and then resting on Todd.
âOf course, she is,â replied Todd, somewhat annoyed that Peter just realized that fact.
Peter stared at Todd but he looked like he was absorbed on something else. Todd rolled his eyes at his friend. He was used to it.
âWhat do you want to say, Pete?â asked Todd in a bored voice.
âWell . . .â Peter trailed off, thinking of ways on how to explain what was on his mind. âMax isn't like those others girls Iâve met. Mind you, Iâve met tons of different girls already. And surprisingly, Iâve never met someone as believed as Max.â
âExplain,â ordered Todd, not bored anymore.
âI mean, sheâs not like most of the girls that always have their doubts.â
âDoubts. Doubts on what?â
Brian looked at Peter, listening.
âDoubts on how you feel for her. Dude, look at you!â Peter gestured on Toddâs appearance. He added admiringly, âYouâre handsome, clever, charming, talented, athletic, muscular ââ
âUgh,â Brian piped in, looking disgusted. âStop talking like a girl, Pete. Itâs creepy.â
Peter shook his head and ignored Brian.
âMy point is if I was Max, and youâre my first boyfriend ever, I wouldnât be sure if youâre that serious about me. Itâll be too good to be true. Itâs like Prince Charming asking Cinderella out. Meaning, itâs like a fairy tale that doesnât fit in reality.â He paused for a moment, and then went on. âBut thatâs what surprises me. She doesnât think that way. Maybe she really thinks that these things happen. Although, knowing Max, Iâd say she thinks that this is all like a dream or something. And that just makes it all confusing. So Iâm gonna stop now.â
Todd was in deep thought about everything that Peter said. It was far-fetched. But then again, this was Peter. He wouldn't be a ladies man if he didn't know anything about girls.
âWhat do you think?â he asked Peter.
âWhat do I think about what?â
Todd rubbed his face. âDo you think that she truly believes all this is a dream, that she doubts in believing that this is real?â
âKnowing Max, I really do believe that she thinks that way. But she acts as if . . .â Peter trailed off, thinking hard for a long minute. Then, he sighed as if he was waving the white flag. âI give up. Iâm confusing myself.â
âMax can be unpredictable at times,â said Brian. âFor all we know, she might really be having her doubts. But we have no way of confirming that.â
âThatâs crazy,â argued Todd, frowning. âIâve already told her how I felt. What more is there?â
âSimple,â answered Peter confidently, then he turned expectantly to Brian. âBrie?â
Brian chuckled at Peter. Peter only grinned.
Brian sighed and looked seriously at Todd. âProve to her that youâre serious. Or rather, let her know that sheâs not in a dream â that this is the reality, and what you feel for her is the reality.â
Todd's frown deepened. âHow?â
âI don't know,â shrugged Brian. âYouâll figure something out,â he added, patting Toddâs shoulder.
âMake it romantic,â advised Peter. âGirls love that.â
âBy romantic, you mean cheesy?â cleared Todd.
âIâd prefer to call it sweet,â corrected Peter. âBut then, thereâs no difference. So, yes,â he nodded. âDonât worry, itâll be worth it. Youâll see.â
Todd glared at Peter once more. In exasperation, he closed his eyes.
âYouâd really do anything for Max, wonât you?â asked Brian with a soft smile on his face.
âAbsolutely anything,â murmured Todd.
âSheâll probably see right through it,â mumbled Peter, more to himself.
Todd heard him and opened his eyes to look at Peter.
âWhat do you mean?â
âThink about it,â said Peter. âTodd Samuels, getting cheesy for some girl?â
âMaxine isnât just âsome girlâ,â growled Todd.
âWe know,â said Peter and Brian in unison.
Todd took a deep breath. âIâll be really embarrassing myself.â
âThatâs the idea,â chuckled Brian. âNo matter how embarrassed you are, she'll see that youâre being the guy that youâre definitely not just for her. Then, she'll ââ
âGUYS! GUYS!â
The three boys quickly spun around and watched as Maxine and Karl ran toward them, holding cans of drinks.
âWhatâs the matter?â asked Brian, alarmed.
Maxine and Karl stopped in front of them, panting.
Maxine was the first to sit down on the sofa beside Todd. Karl looked at the gang, and then he grinned.
âNothing, I just wanted you to know that they will be playing next,â he informed them, nodding toward Dominique and his friends.
Todd didn't even bother to look.
âYouâre right. Itâs nothing,â he said nonchalantly.
When Dominique passed by them, he glanced only at Maxine and smiled. Maxine was very well aware of Todd beside her, but she didn't want to be rude. So she tried to give Dominique a smile; instead it turned out to be a grimace. Dominique found it amusing and he laughed, causing Todd to quickly look at him and glare. Dominique grinned evilly as he turned his eyes to Todd.
âDonât fret, Samuels,â he said. âIâm not going to steal your girl from you.â
Dominiqueâs band mates snickered as they went through the curtain and to the front stage of the auditorium.
Peter made a disgusted sound. Brian looked serious. Karl waited for the song to start. Toddâs face was unreadable while staring at the place where Dominique and his friends left. Lastly, Maxine was watching Todd.
âThe song weâre about to play was composed by Dominique Harris,â announced someone on the microphone. âWe hope you like it.â
âGive it up fooooooooooooor . . . the Vladimiiiiiiiiiiirs!â exclaimed the event host.
Everybody was still and quiet in the auditorium. Then, there was the soft sound of the drums being played.
âThere you are âª
In the midst of all the confusion
Minding your own,
Through the mystification
Here is my hand for you to cling onâ«
âThere you are âª
Trying to remember,
A place in your heart
When you and I are together
For whenever I close my eyes
I can be with you,
Even just for a moment . . .â â«
The electrifying sound of the guitars entered the music. The drums went faster but still soft, and then slowly turning to rock music.
âAs expected, theyâre good,â commented Brian approvingly.
âBut weâre better,â said Peter smugly.
âA lot better,â corrected Karl.
âI guess I better tell you now,â said Todd quietly, facing Maxine.
Maxine looked at him in confusion.
âTell me what?â she asked, getting a bit nervous.
Brian, Peter, and Karl looked at Todd eagerly. Maxine didn't understand the sudden sensation of uneasiness inside her. What was Todd going to say?
He took a deep breath and said, âYouâll be playing the violin.â
Maxine blinked.
âWhat?â demanded Maxine, Brian, Peter, and Karl in shock.
âWell, you said that you wanted to be a part of the surprise,â shrugged Todd.
âI do, but ââ
âBut what?â
âBut â but,â stammered Maxine, âbut it has been a while since I last played the violin. Besides, how does playing the violin help with the twist? I donât think that itâs a good idea for me to play.â
âExplain your plan slowly, dude,â Brian told Todd, his brows was furrowed from figuring out what exactly Toddâs idea was.
âI think I should be the one who should sing this time,â began Todd. âBrianâs still going to play the drums. Karl will still play his instrument. Peter will still play his part. And Iâll still play the lead guitar, as planned. The only thing that will change is that Maxine will be playing the violin instead of being the vocalist.â
The gang stared at him for a moment, while Maxine bit her lip.
âIâm following you,â said Brian slowly. âBut there isnât enough time for us to practice.â
âShe can do it,â persisted Todd. âI know she can.â He looked straight into Brianâs eyes, telling him that it was his final decision.
âCan I have a say on this?â
They looked at Karl. He looked serious, as if he was ready to prove a point. This behavior was very unusual from him. So the gang was all ears.
âOf course,â said Brian, while Todd nodded.
âLook, even from the beginning, Max exceeded our expectations,â started Karl. âShe can sing any kind of genre there is. That's why I agree with Todd on letting Maxine play the violin â even if I havenât heard her play yet. I know that sheâll stun us again with her unpredictable style.â He faced Maxine and smiled. âMax, donât doubt yourself. You might know yourself better than us, but you canât see your actions as clearly as we do.â
âVery well said, man,â grinned Peter.
Todd smiled. âAgreed?â
âAgreed,â replied the other boys.
Maxine sat frozen. A lot of things entered her mind. But it all focused to the memory of when she last played the violin.
She still lived in New Jersey then, several months ago. She stood on a stage in a school auditorium. The atmosphere was so quiet that it was almost eerie. Everyone listened as she played the violin. She put her heart in that music, knowing that it would be the last night that their family was together.
âMax, are you still with us?â
Maxine blinked. She looked around and saw four boys looking at her. Their expressions were full of concern. She blinked again, realizing that it was only just a memory. It wasn't reasonable to get worried for something that happened in the past. What was important was now and tomorrow.
She smiled at her friends. She was glad that she had them, especially Todd. Yes. Todd. Whatever would have happened to her if she hadnât met him? She'd probably still be miserable, sulking somewhere.
âWhatâs wrong?â Todd asked her.
âItâs nothing. I just recalled . . .â Maxine trailed off. He waited for her to continue but she didn't. Nobody spoke for a moment. Then, she smiled and said, âI agree on playing the violin. Just tell me what to do.â
Peter grinned. Karl nodded.
âOkay, then,â said Brian with a smile.
Todd looked suspiciously at Maxine. She obviously trailed off and quickly changed the subject. What was she about to say? But he decided to let it go. Heâd interrogate her later.
First, there was something that he had to do.
