Chapter 11

A couple days pass, and it's Thursday, the last day of September.

Of course, like every other day this week, I'm late. Not to school, but to Jason's house.

Quickly getting ready, I let my hair fall loose past my shoulders, and put on black leggings, matching it with a navy blue sweater that is the softest thing ever inside.

Once I've put on my socks, I grab my phone from my night stand and rush downstairs.

Where the glass normally is, isn't there anymore. Hasn't been there the whole week.

My father still hasn't showed up since he slapped me across the face.

Clenching my jaw at the thought of my father, I grab a hold of a cheese string from the fridge. I grab my bag from the front of the house, tossing a water bottle inside, and a snack to munch on during class.

I'm out of the house, and in front of his in minutes.

Not even bothering with knocking, I swing the door open, grinning when I spot Jason, and Lucas.

My smile goes down slightly when I see their angry expression... aimed towards me.

Jason, and Lucas are standing side by side, glaring at me. I straighten my stance and fix up a smile, giving them an innocent look that would make any fool feel  better.

However, they aren't fools.

Jason takes a step forward. "We agreed. 8.20am, Emma," he says lowly.

Ah, 8.20am.

Ever since  the boys told me the truth, my relationship with Jason improved drastically. Meaning, that instead of walking every single day to school, he would be driving me.

And since school starts at 8.45am, I am meant to be over there by 8.20am.

I'm already failing at that though. In my calculations, I came in at 8.36am.

Oops?

"Well we agreed to be there for each other no matter what," I shoot back, but grimace when I realize what I said.

I cringe again when I see his angry expression morph into bring slightly hurt. "Kidding, kidding. You know I love you, right? Great, let's go!" I shout, trying to avoid getting yelled at.

Lucas stays silent throughout the whole ride to school, and I begin to wonder again why he's even here, considering he has his own car.

We're at school in minutes, and I jump out of the car, speed walking to school.

"Yo, Em! Where you going?" Jason asks from behind me once he's exited his car.

"Bathroom, be right back," I shout from over my shoulder, and he responses with a quick okay.

I'm back outside in a matter of minutes, but can't seem to find Jason or even Lucas near the car.

I decide to turn back and head to school, but come to a stop when I see Jason leaning against the schools brick wall, looking confused at something taking place in front of him.

Following where his eyes are looking, I find them locked on Adam and Lucas... laughing?

I take slow, cautious steps to them, until all three of them notice my presence. "Since... since when are you and Adam buddies, Lucas?"

A unfamiliar look passes on Lucas's face. Happiness.

"Well, yesterday we bumped into each other again and got to talking. He's not as bad as I thought he was," Lucas confesses, and I widen my eyes.

"But, you said you had... you know, a feeling about him," I say quietly, but send Adam a small smile nonetheless.

"That was before I knew him, Princess. I tend to be a little judgy," he smirks at me, and my shocked expression changes instantly to a look of hatred towards him.

I scoff in disbelief, and cross my arms over my chest. "This... friendship makes no sense. Just letting you know," I tell honestly.

"If I wanted your opinion, I would have asked for it Princess," Lucas raises his eyebrows, daring me to say something and I pound my fists together.

A dark look forms on his face, and before he's about to reply, he's cut off by the warning bell ringing.

"Let's go Em," Jason whispers, moving next to me.

"Fuck you too, Emma!" Lucas shouts from behind me once there is a great distance between us.

Not even bothering to look at him, I throw my left arm up, sticking my middle finger out, loud and proud.

Jason laughs under his breath next to me. "I forgot how much you both hate each other."

Well, it wasn't always like this.

We both turn the next corner, and once I find that it's not really crowded, I push Jason aside so we don't block the hall.

"Do you think I should tell Anna and Lauren about my... abilities?" I ask the question that's been swarming in my head, silently.

Jason widens his eyes, clearing his throat before speaking. "Well, uh - I didn't tell Dylan, neither did Lucas. It's safer that way," he scratches the back of his neck, and I furrow my eyebrows.

"Safer? What are they in danger from?" I ask.

"Witch hunters, remember? They can use them by getting to you, okay? So don't tell them," he sends me a hard look, leaving there no room for discussion.

I nod slowly, pursing my lips. I start walking the direction of our class, Jason following after me.

In seconds, we're outside our first period class, Calculus with Mrs. Carlton.

Jason walks to his desk without looking back, and I frown when I find my two best friends chatting away in the back of the class.

Have to keep them safe.

♡

"No! You're going, and that's final Emma Sullivan!" Anna yells as we're sitting at our table during lunch.

"And watch Lauren eat Dylan's face? Not down," I say causally before I take a big bite out of my sub.

Lauren's mouth opens, ready to defend herself however closes her mouth when Jason emerges from the cafeteria doors, looking pissed.

He spots me in a seconds, and changes his tracks so he's heading my way.

"Fucking Lucas," Jason mumbles under his breath once he's near me.

He drops his bag on the floor, and takes a seat on my right. "Where's your other friend? What was her name, Jasmine?" Jason asks, angrily dropping his phone on the table.

"Chem room, I think," Anna whispers, clearly not happy by Jason's angry behavior.

"Where's Lucas?" I ask, facing him before I scan the room.

"Ditched me to hang out with Adam... fucking Adam," he growls, and I widen my eyes at his attitude.

"You're really not a fan of him, are you?" I ask slowly, and by the way his gaze swings to me, glaring at me so hard I'm worried his eyes will pop out, I'm sure he hates him with a passion.

Before I can ask why, screams are heard from outside the cafeteria. In seconds, the room is silent, and we hear more yelling.

Before I even have a chance to understand what the person - or people - outside are yelling about, almost everyone in the whole room stands up, and runs outside.

Lauren, Anna, Jason and I are the last ones in the hall, but whatever is going on is covered by dozens of people.

I grab Lauren's hand, who then grabs Anna, who then grabs Jason's hand, and I walk them to the front with me.

Once I see what's going on, I widen my eyes and Lauren screams, letting go of my still hand.

Lucas is punching Dylan. One of his best friends.

I look at the other side of the circle that was formed around them, and find Adam smirking at Lucas's behavior.

Before I can turn around to calm down Lauren, a girl on my right gets shoved, who then accidentally shoves me into the middle of the circle.

Jason calls out my name, and I look at him, frightened. His eyes are filled with horror, and before I have a chance to understand what's going on, I'm knocked down to the floor.

The cheering, and yelling suddenly stop, and I open my eyes slowly, looking at the ceiling.

"You fucking dumb ass," I hear Jason yell to someone.

Suddenly, Lucas's worried face is in front of me, and Jason shoves him away.

"I-I didn't mean too, honest man," Lucas says in surrender, but by the way I hear the crowd gasp, I'm assuming Jason didn't accept his ass-hat apology.

"You elbowed her on the cheek you dumb ass! What the fuck is your issue?" Jason yells.

Lucas doesn't answer his rhetorical question, and Jason decides to forget him, and put his attention on me.

He lifts me up bridal style, letting me rest my head on his shoulder. I flinch when my cheek hits his chest.

"I'm taking her to the nurses office," Jason tells Anna, and Lauren.

"I'm coming with you," Anna says immediately, quickly standing next to him.

"I-I'll meet you there, I'm just gonna make sure Dylan's alright first," Lauren says quickly, and stares at me guiltily.

"It's alright Laur, go check on your hubby. I'll see you soon," I send her a soft smile, letting her know it's alright.

Once she's down on her knees next to Dylan, Jason looks around the now silent crowd. "What the fuck are you all looking at? Go eat or some shit!"

The crowd quickly disperses, and Jason turns around glaring at Lucas, and Adam, who is now standing next to him. "Grow up, Lucas. You won't be able to fight yourself out of every situation in the future. Remember that," after speaking, Jason takes me to the opposite direction of them, Anna standing next to us.

We're outside the nurses office in a couple minutes, and Anna knocks on the door.

When Ms. Harlock opens the door, her eyes find my now bruising cheek. "Set her down on the bed," she says quickly, rushing back into her office to organize what she'll need.

Once I'm lying down, she puts on her latex free gloves, and stares at Jason and Anna. "Please wait outside in the hall," she says politely.

Anna nods, heading outside while Jason stares at me momentarily before leaving.

"So how did this happen?" She asks as she's feeling the structure of my cheek.

"Got shoved into the middle of a fist fight. Ended up getting elbowed in the face," I state dryly, staring at the ceiling so intensely people would think I'm staring at my favorite meal of all time.

Red velvet cupcakes...

A couple minutes later, she rips off her gloves, tossing them in the trash. "Well hon, you haven't broken any bones, but it will bruise. Most likely will stay around for a little over a week or two," she says sincerely, and I sit up slowly.

"Thanks Ms. Harlock," I send her a grateful smile.

"What do you have next period?" She asks, looking up from whatever she's holding.

"Fitness," I groan.

"Okay, I'll write you a note. Show it to your teacher, alright?"

I nod, appreciating that she's gonna help me sit out without having to write a 1000 word essay. "I would recommend icing the bruise for now, just to cool it down," she smiles, and is about to write down the note on her notepad, but is interrupted by Jason shouting something outside.

Worried about what's going on, I move my legs so they're hanging off the bed. Just as I'm about to jump off, Lucas enters the room.

I look at him, ready to scream, but come to a stop when I see a look on his face that I haven't seen in years. Concern. For me.

"I'm so sorry Emma, I really am," he apologizes, taking a step closer to me.

The nurse, who clearly doesn't know what to do in this situation, takes a seat at her desk and watches the scene unfold in front of her.

I glare at him, not caring that he's behaving differently. "You're stupid," I state.

His head goes down, looking at the ground like it's the most interesting thing in the world. "I know," he chuckles under his breath.

I rolls my eyes, my lip lifting up slightly. Before I can say something, Jason comes in, and drags Lucas out of the room without saying anything.

I widen my eyes. Okay...

Jason shuts the door on his way out, leaving me with a smiling nurse. "The guy who hit you... are you both friends?"

I scoff, dusting off my pants. "God no."

Not anymore anyways.

I'm dismissed from her in another 5 minutes, and when I leave her office, Anna is the only one waiting in the hall.

"Where's Jason?" I ask, looking up and down the hall.

She opens her mouth, ready to respond, but get cut off by someone yelling.

I groan. Why is everyone yelling today?

I grab her hand, walking around the corner to find Lucas and Jason in a heated argument.

That's it.

I drop her hand, and stand in between them.

"I'm done with this shit. You both are being way more annoying when you aren't friends than when you are," I state honestly, putting my hands on both of their chests, separating them.

"But-"

"He-"

"No! You're going to let me talk," I yell, stopping them from arguing again.

I drop my hands, and take a step back so I'm in front of both of them. "You're acting like children. Literally. You guys are acting like enemies, and I'm not down to deal with this shit. Grow up."

I turn to face Lucas, a glare already on my face. "You. You've known Adam for what? 2 weeks? And you've hated his guts for more than half of that. Now you're best buddies? What bull. Jason's your best friend. Have been since you were 6 years old. No one can replace him."

Lucas's face morphs into a look of remorse, and continues listening.

"And you," I turn my direction so I'm facing Jason. "Don't be jealous. Adam's a phase. You've always kept him sane. Adam is just here to bring the bad out of him. He'll be gone one day."

Lucas scoffs at my statement, and I turn to look at him. "Oh, Princess. I've always been no good," his eyes darken, taking a step closer to me. "Adam isn't doing anything to me other than helping me show my true self," he quickly glances at the now forming bruise on my cheek, and I tilt my head to the side when he looks in my eyes again.

I gently tap his cheek, and let my hand rest there as I get closer to whisper in his ear. "I somehow doubt that Lucas," I whisper, then push my head back slightly to look into his burning gaze. "You can't fool me, Scott."

We stay still, looking at each other for a short amount of time before I slowly remove my hand from his cheek.

Once there is a good amount of distance between us, I look between them again. "Grow up."

The warning bell rings, cutting them off on whatever they were going to say, and I look at a startled Anna.

Grinning, I walk up to her and lock my arm with hers. "Wanna walk me to Fitness?"

She shakes her head at my behavior, and nods.

Right before we turn a corner, I turn back to find Jason leaning against the wall, covering his face with his hands, while Lucas is rooted in the same spot, staring at me intensely.

♡

I show my note to Coach Marcy, and she lets me sit down on the bleachers while the girls are running laps around the football field.

What a nice day to get elbowed in the face.

I decide to sit in on one of the upper levels as I'm watching my fellow classmates.

A few minutes before I pass out from boredom, someone taps my shoulder from behind me.

Screaming, I grab their arm, and begin to twist it, but stop when I hear Adam scream.

"Emma it's me! Chill," he pants, taking his hand out of my grip.

He sits next to me, and eyes my bruise. "You good?"

"Peachy," I tightly grin, staring down at the field.

We're both silent for a while. After my coach tells the girls to stop running, I decide to break the silence. "Since when were the two of you friends?"

He chuckles as if I said something funny. "I knew you would ask that."

I raise my eyebrows, waiting for him to answer. He rolls his eyes, finally speaking. "We were both at Joey's Bar a couple nights ago. Started off with a lot of arguments, but last night, we got to talking," he explains.

I clench my jaw, not really happy that they're best buds.

I look down at the field again, and in the corner of my eye, I find Adam sending me a smirk.
