Chapter 14

3 days pass since the carnival on Saturday.

Sunday was catching up day, which really means doing some last minute homework I forgot to complete.

Monday consisted of me shattering lots of stuff in a empty science room during lunch as Jason was teaching me more techniques on how to control my magic.

Thank goodness he has the ability of putting things back together.

I wake up Tuesday morning slightly earlier, but decide to just get up — God knows if I close my eyes for one second, I'll wake up 10 years later.

After leaving the bathroom, I put on some black leggings, and a dark blue sweater.

Just as I'm slipping on some socks, my phone rings from my nightstand.

"Hello?" I say through the phone once I've picked up.

"Hey Sunshine," Adam slurs from the other side.

I roll my eyes, but can't stop the smile from peaking out. "Yes Adam?"

"Get ready. I'm driving you," he states, and I furrow my eyebrows.

"Why?"

"Because I want to Sunshine! I'll be there in less than 5 minutes," he says before he hangs up.

What the hell?

I sit down on my bed, and begin texting Jason.

Emma: Hey, so Adam just told me he's picking me up. That good with you?

He responds seconds later.

Jason: Are you kidding? Tell him to take you for the rest of the semester! Maybe then I don't have to wait a decade for you ass to show up on my front doorstep.

Emma: Hey! I'm not always late.

Jason: Tell that to our first period teacher.

Emma: Shut up.

Jason sends me a wink after that, so I shut off my phone and head downstairs.

Once I'm at the last step, I hear something coming from the kitchen that I don't often hear anymore.

My dad. Humming.

I stand still on the last step, and shut my eyes tightly. Oh God, why now?

Last time me and my dad faced each other was a week and a half ago, when I got back from my picnic slash hike with Adam.

I wish my bruise was still on my face just to torment him.

I walk down the last step quickly, but apparently not quiet enough because his head shoots up as if I dropped a vase on the ground.

We both stare at each other, no emotion passing through neither one of us.

I decide to move first.

I move my eyes away from him as if he doesn't exist, and go to the fridge to grab some grapes.

I rinse about 7 in the sink, and lean against the counter as I'm munching on them.

I stare at my father for about a minute before he breaks.

"Why are you still looking at me?" Dad says, sounding frustrated as he looks away from his laptop.

I shrug casually. "Just trying to think of what kind of father you are," a grin spreads on my face before I can contain it. "I wonder what Jessica and mom would think about this new behavior."

My grin vanishes as fast as it came, and I glare at him. "Oh, wait. You wouldn't know what they would think because you abandoned us. All of us."

He shuts his laptop hard, and stands up from his seat. "Are you saying I'm the reason they both died?" He snarls.

"It would be bad to just cross you out of the equation," I tilt my head to the side, keeping my face emotionless.

I know I'm being a complete bitch, but when you think about how your father stayed silent with you for 2 years, then decided to put some shit in your drink, and then hit you? It doesn't really sit well if you ask me.

He takes a step closer to me, and has such a dark look on his face I start to get afraid that he'll do something again.

Thankfully, I'm saved by the bell.

I run around the island, and rush to the front door, not surprised to find Adam on my porch.

I send him a wary grin. "Hey, just come in. I'll grab my bag and we can head out."

He nods, and steps forward. Once he has shut the door, I turn around and jog to the kitchen to bend down and grab a water bottle from the cupboard.

Once I'm back up on my feet, I turn back around to face Adam, only to see him squaring off with my dad.

It... looks like they know each other.

"Uh, let's go?" I ask once I've picked up my school bag from the corner of the kitchen.

He looks away from my dad, and his serious expression morphs to the classic smile he always has on his face. "Yep, let's go Sunshine."

He leave the house first, leaving the front door wide open for me to leave as well.

I turn back around and face my dad who has a cold expression on his face.

I send him a similar look, and step outside before shutting the door.

Who is that man? He's definitely not the one who has raised me.

"Let's go Sunshine," Adam calls from out his open window.

I face away from the door, and turn around to smile at him. "Yeah, yeah I'm coming. Hold your horses."

The ride was mostly silent for some weird reason, and before I knew it, we were parked outside Berkeley High School.

I swing my bag around so I hold it on one shoulder, but it results in my shoulder feeling sore, so I decide to take out my Calculus and Vectors textbook.

As we're both walking into the school, Adam offers to walk me to my locker, and I shrug casually.

Once we're about to turn the next corner to get to the stairs, I spot Lucas on his phone, texting someone.

Clenching my jaw and the current textbook in my hand, I speed walk to him. Once I'm in front of him, I hit him on his right arm with my textbook.

At that, his gaze connects with mine and shoves the textbook down so it lands on the ground.

I glare at him, and am about to pick it up but Adam manages to pick it up before I can.

As he's handing me my textbook, I glare at Lucas. "Where have you been the last couple days? Jason's been trying to reach you."

He narrows his eyes at me, and shuts off his phone without glancing at it. "Why do you even care Princess?" He lifts up his phone, and unlocks it.

"Go away now. Shoo," he moves his hand to the other direction before continuing his conversation with whomever on the phone.

I widen my eyes, and without thinking twice, I snatch his phone out of his hand. "Hey! Who do you think you are?" He shouts, his eyes burning like fire.

Tilting my head to the side, I give him a friendly grin. "Emma Sullivan. Current, and only best friend of Jason Valentine because you can't get your head out of your ass."

Lucas snatches his phone out of my hand, and is about to yell at me, but gets interrupted by a loud voice coming from the other side of the hall.

"Ladies, and... boys! You're all cordially invited to my party, which is, well this Friday!" Brianna yells, with Allison and Rebecca next to her on each side.

Everyone in the hall cheers, and she shouts, demanding their silence. "If you get an invite, I hope you can come!" Everyone who already knows they're not gonna get an invite groans, and gets back to their conversation.

Allison hands the invites in hesitation, but Rebecca gladly struts the hall, handing out the invites, and sticking out her tongue at those who aren't invited.

Brianna spots Lucas, and has a mischievous grin on her face as she skips elegantly to our location.

"Here Lucas," she gives the invite slowly, looking at him so intensely I would think they're talking to each other through each others minds.

After failing at giving him her message, she turns to Adam, who is still standing next to me, and grins. "You're new. And hot. Here's an invite. You're welcome."

Once she hands Adam an invite, she turns around so fast, it leaves her hair flying from behind.

"Wait!" Adam shouts before she can move another step. "You didn't give an invite to Emma."

Brianna's gaze goes from him to me, and she raises her eyebrows. "Have we met?"

Well I walked in on you and Lucas making out 2 or more times, so officially? No, we haven't.

I grin, and decide to be nice to people for a change. "Hi, I'm Emma Sullivan. You don't have to give me an invite," I stick out my hand for her to shake but she just scrunches her face up.

A handshake Emma? Really?

I slowly drop my hand down. "Well, hi. And I don't want to invite you," she looks between the Lucas and Adam.

She smiles, and waves flirtatiously. "Bye boys."

She turns her heel to leave, but gets interrupted again, but not by Adam. "Just give her a goddamn invite Brianna, and stop being a bitch," Lucas says, sounding exhausted just by having this conversation.

Brianna gasps silently at Lucas slight outburst, and she walks forward to give me an invite before turning around to leave.

I stare at Brianna's walking figure until she leaves the hall. Once she's gone, I stare at Lucas in shock.

I'm about to open my mouth to say something but get broken off by the sound of the warning bell ringing.

"Em! There you are, Jesus," Jason says as he's walking up to me.

He glances at Lucas's stiff figure, but looks back to me so fast you'll probably doubt he was looking at him in the first place.

"Let's go to Cal?" He asks.

I look up at both Adam and Lucas. When I see that they're both staring at each other silently, I turn back to Jason to nod my head.

I step forward, and turn back around to wave goodbye to Adam, which he obviously doesn't pay attention to considering that his eyes are still glued to Lucas's.

Okay then.

On our way to the class, I rush to my locker to take out everything I won't need until after lunch. We get to class a minute or two before the final bell rings, and I'm shocked when I see Jasmine taking her seat on the desk next to mine.

"Jazzy!" I shout, leaving Jason alone.

She turns to face me, and grins. "Hey Em, how you've been?"

"Me? Where the heck have you been? I haven't seen you since what? Friday?" I guess, and she sends me a guilty smile.

"Yeah, sorry for not telling you guys, it was really late notice. I went out of the state with my aunt!" She explains excitedly.

"Ohh, where did you both go?" I ask, and just as she opens her mouth, Mrs. Carlton demands our attention to be on the board.

Later, I mouth and she nods.

♡

During lunch, Jasmine ditched us to go to the science lab to study for a test she missed, and since Anna and Lauren have a bladder the size of a peanut, they had to go pee.

I'm waiting for them outside the bathroom, staring at the entrance as I'm waiting for them to exit.

As I'm about to march in there to make them hurry up, I hear footsteps coming from down the hall.

Turning around to glance at whoever it is, my eyes freeze in place when I see that it's Lucas, drinking water from the water fountain.

He still hasn't noticed me, so I use this to my advantage and decide to scare him.

As he's going back down to get more water, he suddenly flinches, and I furrow my eyebrows.

"What's wrong?" I ask from behind him.

He turns around so fast I'm scared he got whiplash. "You scared the shit out of me."

I grin quickly, but erase all emotion off my face when Lucas is looking at me like he wants to chop off my body parts and sell them on the black market.

"What's wrong with you?" I ask again, leaning against the lockers casually.

He takes a step forward, and glares at me. "Why do you care?"

I look above me and think if this is supposed to be a trick question or not. "Uh, I don't. I'm just asking."

He laughs dryly, and I look back down so I'm eye level with him. He takes a step closer to me. "You know, Princess. You're something else."

"I assume by something else, you mean something bad?" I ask, standing a little straighter.

"Oh you know me so well," he takes another step closer to me, and I began to realize how little space we have between us now.

Oh God, this is where he kills me!

I straighten my stance so my whole body is against the lockers. "Lucas, why are you being —"

"What's so special about you?" He mumbles to himself, resting both of his hands on either side of my face.

"Lucas," I breath out, kind of scared and... curious where this is going.

"Emmy, did you ditch us?" Anna says in a singing tone.

I look at Lucas one last time, before shoving his left shoulder so he moves away from me.

He takes a sharp intake of breath, but I ignore it as I'm making my way to my friends.

♡

I spent lunch with Anna, and Lauren but left them 30 minutes before my next classes started.

I met Jason in room 322 once again, and we spent the total 30 minutes practicing telekinesis.

Which, might I add, I'm getting way better at.

Last period rolls around too fast, and I'm in my seat, ready for another note taking lesson.

So imagine my surprise when Ms. Nestly, my Chemistry teacher, states we're gonna be paired in 2's for a small in-class assignment.

Fuck me.

As she was calling out each pair, I was praying to any God up there that I don't get paired with Lucas.

After a minute, my prayers were answered.

"Emma Sullivan, and Brandon Lemen," Ms. Nestly calls.

Brandon... why does that name sound so familiar?

I look behind me and see Brandon's smirking at Lucas.

Oh shit, they got into a little fight!

Once Brandon is seated next to me, he sets his binder on the desk, but is soon swiped off the desk like... magic.

Lucas shoves him out of the seat and ignores his complains. "Let's get to work?" He asks.

"Mr. Scott! Why are you not with your partner?" I turn back to see a sweet looking girl looking at Lucas in fear.

I look back at Lucas just as he smirks down at Brandon's body on the ground. "Well, he has a little crush on Abigail—"

"Adi—"

"Whatever. Anyways, he has a crush on her, and I thought I'd help a brother out, you know?" He says, tilting his head to the side as if he's daring her to challenge him.

Ms. Nestly nods her head slowly, and looks back down at her notes.

"Get lost," he says lowly as Brandon's standing up.

"Why did you voluntarily want to be my partner?" I ask slowly once Brandon's out of ear shot.

"You should hear the shit going on in his brain Princess," he mumbles under his breath as he's writing down the notes we have to copy down from textbook.

Well, okay then.

♡

After school finished, Anna, Lauren, Jasmine and I went over to my house.

Once I've unlocked the front door, Anna and Lauren run into the house, shoving each other on who's gonna get to my comfy chair first.

I shut the door behind me, and chuckle when I hear Anna shouting in victory.

I turn to my right, and notice Jasmine is no longer beside me, but is now in front of a photo my family and I took when we went on vacation when I was in eighth grade.

I step up closer to Jasmine's unmoving body. "Jasmine? You alright?"

She stares at the photo a couple more seconds longer before looking at me. "Huh? Did you say something?"

I open my mouth, ready to speak, but close it last minute. I shake my head, and tell her to follow me upstairs.

"Emma! Anna ruined my last good pair of leggings," Lauren groans into my blanket once I've entered the room.

"How?" I ask, looking at Anna warily.

"She shoved me, and I landed on my knee. Now there's a goddamn hole on my leggings," Lauren looks up, and faces Anna.

"Well, we can go to the mall and get more!" She shouts cheerfully, and I widen my eyes.

Once she looks at me, I motion my hand so it's repeatedly crossing horizontally, silently telling her no.

"Fine, but you're buying me one Anne," Lauren grumbles, and I sigh.

Mall it is, then.

♡

We've walked a quarter of the mall for a little more than 30 minutes, but I swear it feels like hours.

We all went in Lauren's car, and got there in 10 minutes, and found her a classic pair of black leggings in another 10 minutes.

However, Anna and Jasmine suddenly decide that they're hungry.

We're in front of the food court soon after, and I immediately see broad shoulders from the corner of my eye.

Turning my head slightly to the left, I find Lucas's back to me, and see Adam smirking in front of him.

I furrow my eyebrows in confusion when I see Lucas's back tense up. Uh oh.

I take two steps forward before Lucas reacts.

Shockingly, it's only a shove. A hard shove, that causes Adam to bump into several people, but still a shove.

I turn back around quickly. "Guys, I'll be right back. I need to break a fight before it starts."

Anna looks at me worriedly just as Lauren has a mischievous smile growing on her face.

I turn to face Jasmine, but her face is resting.

I look between all three of them before jogging up to Lucas.

"Hey, what's going on? Where's Jason?" I ask breathlessly once I'm next to Lucas.

He looks at me blankly. "At home," he begins looking between Adam, and the girls behind me before looking back to me.

"Where you should be too," he says lowly, and I'm about to say something but stop short when I see Lucas walking away from me, bumping into Adam's shoulder hard in the process.

"What happened?" I ask Adam once Lucas is out of eye-shot.

"I don't know, he asked me to come here during lunch, and we were talking and he just snapped," Adam explains, seeming to look worried for his douche of a friend.

I don't get to respond because he begins talking again. Looking down to me, he smirks. "So... can I hang out with you girlies?"

I snort in response, and walk away from him, letting him face my backside.

5 minutes later, I finally find all three of them munching on Wendy's.

Anna looks at me through her lashes as she's shoving down fries.

I grimace in disgust, but when Anna hands me a fry, I gladly take it, and sit down with them.

♡

Thursday passed by like every other day.

After school however, was the first time I went over to Jason's house to practice magic.

We of course first watched a movie, Unfriended, and then got to our target focus.

Me acing telekinesis.

Halfway through our lesson however, Jason's front door is swung open.

"Alright Valentine. Let's hug and —" Lucas pauses at the doorway of the living room when he sees me.

"No, no, no. It's not hug and make up. It's just kiss and makeup. So go on. Kiss," I grin when I see Lucas's annoyed face.

I take a seat on the couch and rest my hands on my lap. "Go on, I'm waiting."

I widen my eyes, and take out my phone. "Now you can go. A lot of ladies will be glad to know the Lucas Scott is going the other way."

He clenches his jaw, and takes two longs steps towards me before snatches my phone out of my hand and tossing it to the other couch.

As if I'm not here, Lucas turns the other direction, only to have his ass right in front of my face.

And what a nice ass it is.

"I'm sorry, okay? I've been a dick this last week. And I've been distant, so that obviously doesn't help my case," Lucas says, and Jason's expression morphs from annoyed to contempt.

"It's alright Luke. Just glad you're not gonna go around anymore sucking Adam's dick," he grins, and Lucas laughs as he playfully shoves Jason's shoulder.

"What are you doing now anyway?" He asks, looking around the mess.

"I'm helping Emma practice magic using telekinesis," Jason looks at me over Lucas's shoulder, and he tilts his head to the kitchen.

"Get a glass of water. Come back with it," he orders, and like the obedient person I am, I follow.

♡

"You... suck," Lucas says through his laughs.

"Fuck you," I spit, and he laughs harder.

I wish I could use telekinesis to get a plane to land on him.

"Okay Em, go grab another glass — we're gonna do this again," Jason says, sending me a patient smile, however I know behind all that, he wants to kill me.

At least Lucas is upfront about it.

I come back from the kitchen moments later, and I stand in front  of Jason, who's also right beside Lucas.

"Okay... now, lift the water up," Jason says slowly, and I shut my eyes.

"She can't do shit, can't you tell by now?" Lucas laughs from his left.

I clench my jaw, and open my eyes.

I glare at him hard, and the next thing I know the water is flown out of the cup, and is split all over his face and clothes.

Yes!

♡
