Chapter 37

Although the three of us weren't looking at each other, I figured that we shared the same shocked expression.

Anthony smirked at he eyed the three of us. "I'll see you all soon," he said before turning around to face one of his men.

"Guide Emma to her bedroom, Davidson," he demanded with a cold voice, and I shook my head, stepping forward before crossing my arms over my chest.

"No. I'm not leaving yet," I said with a hard tone, and Anthony looked back to me with raised eyebrows.

He turned back to the man he called Davidson. "Wait out the door. She won't be here longer than five minutes."

Davidson, the man with dark brown hair and a small receding hairline nodded, and Anthony walked passed him while four guards followed behind him.

When the door closed behind Anthony, Lucas, Jason and I were finally left alone.

"Don't worry about him, Hope. He's bluffing," Lucas laughed, but it seemed forced.

Turning around, I ignored Lucas' intense gaze and moved my eyes to meet Jason's dark brown ones.

"Hybrids?" I whispered with furrowed eyebrows, and he sighed.

"I don't know what to say, Em," he said softly, and my gaze slowly looked back to Lucas.

I couldn't hold back a dry laugh. "We're apparently hybrids. You're a hunter. What are Lauren and Anna?"

"Werewolves?" Jason laughed, and I scoffed.

"Probably," I whispered.

Looking over my shoulder, I nervously glanced at the door that I was worried would open in any second.

"Don't worry," Lucas whispered again, and I turned back around to see that he has moved slightly closer to me.

A shaky breath left me. "I can't help but worry, Lucas. Your life is at stake for a spell that apparently only Jason and I can do."

My eyes shifted to Jason worriedly before looking back to Lucas. "And God knows what spell he wants us to do."

Lucas suddenly cupped my cheek, and unintentionally, I brought my cheek closer to his palm.

"Go. Eat something. We'll be here when you get back," he smiled.

"No," I shook my head. "I don't want to leave guys alone."

"Don't worry about us, Em," Jason said, and I noticed how close Lucas and I looked in his perspective.

Quickly, I took two steps away from Lucas so I was between the both of them in front of them.

"Go," they both said, and my lips parted, ready to deny their demand, but before I could, Jason walked around me and opened the door, revealing Omar, Victor and Davidson standing on the opposite end.

"Take her," Jason said with a clenched jaw, and my brows furrowed.

"Why do you want me to leave so bad?" I asked, but both of them ignored my question as Omar stood next to me.

"We'll see you soon," Lucas smiled before the door closed, separating me from the both of them.

♡

For thirty minutes, I sat alone on the bar stool as I moved the scrambled eggs around my plate with a fork.

"Eat, darling," Juliet, one of the many cooks smiled at me, and I forced a smile as I looked up to the middle aged woman.

Forcing a forkful of scrambled eggs, I struggled to hold a smile as I swallowed hard.

"Emma," Finn called out from the entrance of the kitchen, and my eyes immediately met his.

He stared at me blankly, and my brows raised, waiting to hear why he called me. "Come with me."

Slowly, I stood up from the table, silently thankful that I didn't have to finish my meal.

Right when I got up from my seat, Finn began walking, and I struggled to follow from behind considering his steps were so far apart.

After a few minutes, we stopped in front of the library, and I clenched my jaw at the thought of who's on the other side of the door.

Finn noticed I was hesitant about entering and nudged me slightly. "Go."

I took a deep breath and opened the door myself to see Anthony in his suit, sitting by himself on the same couch when he told me he was my dad.

Anthony stood up when he heard me enter, and shoved his hands into his pant pockets as he turned to face me.

"Emma, " he smiled politely. "Come. Sit," he said, nodding to the seat across from him.

I took slow steps towards the seat, waiting to see if he would do anything while I was walking.

Thankfully, I got to my destination safely, however, I chose to stand up instead of sitting.

"Sit," he demanded softly, but I refused.

"I'd rather stand."

Anthony's soft expression narrowed into a glare. "Sit, Emma."

Sighing, I sat down across from him, and he followed.

Lacing my fingers together, I sat straight as I watched him get comfortable in front of me.

"Tonight at midnight, you and Jason will be led downstairs. Lucas will be there in case anything comes to happen," he began, and I clenched my jaw slightly.

"So what? We have to do a fucking spell for you and that's it?"

Anthony laughed. "Not just any spell. It's a spell for immortality. Hunters before us had failed. But this time, we will succeed."

"You've failed before but you still try? Just give up already," I grumbled the last bit, and Anthony clenched his jaw.

"Hunter's don't quit. My blood runs through your veins, Emma. You must know that," he smirked, before leaning back.

"On with the plan. At midnight, you will be received a gun, because my men still do not trust that you'll use your magic against us," he said calmly, eyeing each cuff on my wrist.

My brows furrowed. "Why... why would I need a gun?"

Anthony sighed, as if he was disappointing in himself. "Have I forgotten that small detail?" He laughed. "In order for the spell to work, one of the two hybrids must survive."

My eyes widened as I asked a question I already knew the answer to. "What do you mean, one of the two?"

"If you kill the other hybrid, you take control of their abilities, not only unlocking their gift, but being given the power to say a spell that will create the elixir of immortality," he confessed.

"What the fuck?" I said, quickly jumping to my feet.

"You want me to kill Jason?" I screeched.

Anthony stood up calmly, as if he wasn't surprised from my response. "Yes. I do believe that you both still have hard feelings, don't you?"

My brows furrowed. "No! We're perfectly fine."

His eyebrows raised expectedly. "Well, I'm sure it wasn't my imagination when there was a point you were upset Jason had dropped you as a friend during your sophomore year."

"Well, he had a good reason," I whispered, and he let out a laugh.

Anthony moved closer. "Think about it, Emma. You can have all the power you can dream of. You'll be the most powerful witch in the universe. All you have to do is kill him," he whispered next to me.

My jaw clenched, knowing that he will never get through to me. "Go to hell."

I turn to leave, nearing the door, however, his voice behind me caused me to freeze.

"It's Jason, or Lucas, Emma. You have the power in your hands to decide who lives and who dies tonight."

♡

I had been pacing in my room for over an hour, worried about what I could possibly do to leave this house with both the men in my life next to me.

Of course, I came out with blank.

If I chose to save Lucas, that meant I would have to kill Jason.

But if I chose to save Jason, Anthony would kill Lucas in retaliation for not doing what he asked.

Either way, it's a lose-lose situation for me.

"Hey," Fay said, cracking the door open slightly before knocking twice.

I turned and smile hesitantly, which she took that as an invite to come inside.

"You okay?" She asked, and I scoffed.

"I don't think I've been okay for the last month," I confessed.

Fay didn't know how to respond, and my footsteps began to slam harder onto the floor. "This whole situation is messed up! My biological birth father comes up and basically steals me away from civilization, but everyone in this fucking mansion thinks this whole situation is fine!" I rant.

"Now the two most important guys in my life are in jeopardy? I'm a fucking teenager! I'm supposed to go out and gossip about the assholes in my grade and rant about how I hate people!"

After I finished speaking, Fay stayed silent, and I forced my feet to stay still in front of her, making me notice a pity look taking over her expression.

"Now I have to decide which one of my friends should have to die," I whispered to myself, and I felt my heart ache at the thought.

"Well," Fay began. "I think you should do it," she confessed, and my eyes shot to hers.

"Do, what?" I asked, hoping she didn't mean what I thought she meant.

Fay shrugged. "Do the spell. I know it'll be hard, but getting ride of the other hybrid could give you a chance to walk free from here," she said, and my lips parted from shock.

"Who are you?" I said, shaking my head in disbelief.

She sighed, crossing her arms over her chest. "Come on, Em. The boss knows all about you and who you love. The girls back in Berkeley? He has men on them. Making sure if you do anything wrong..."

My face morphed to horror, and her expression softened. "He would never hurt a hair on your head from my knowledge, but he would have no problem hurting others to punish you," she whispered.

"I can't hear this anymore," I whispered, walking passed her.

Once I was in the hall, I rushed towards the guest wing and walked down to see the boys door guarded with three hunters.

"Move," I demanded with a straight face, and the three of them shared a look before slowly looking back to me.

The woman in the center rolled her eyes and opened the door for me. "You have five minutes."

"Fuck you and your minutes," I snarled as I was walking inside their room, not giving her a chance to close the door without me inside.

The door slammed shut behind me, and I watched Lucas rub his temples as Jason stood up from his seat.

Without thinking twice, I rushed to him and wrapped my arms around him, choking on a sob.

Jason tightened his hold around my waist with one arm while using the other to lace his fingers into my hair.

"What's going on Em?" Jason asked, and I slowly moved away, knowing that my eyes were filled with unshed tears.

I eyed both Lucas and Jason before my lips parted, releasing Anthony's whole plan when midnight comes.

In thirty minutes, Jason was pacing in front of me while Lucas clenched his fist in front of the wall, ready to give it a beat down.

"I think you should do it," Jason said, still walking back and forth and my eyes widened.

Lucas looked away from the wall and he took long strides over to Jason before punching his shoulder somewhat hard.

"What the fuck? No! If you die, he wins, and I'd rather fucking die before I let that asshole win," Lucas clenched out, and Jason stopped his movements as he glanced at me.

"Why us?" Jason shook his head with a whisper, and my eyes fluttered closed as my head went down.

"Why are we these fucking hybrids?" Jason questioned to himself lowly, however, a deep laugh that came from the direction in front of the door caused all our eyes to move to see Anthony standing casually against the wall.

"I thought it was obvious," he laughed again, and I assumed we all glared as we watched him come closer.

Anthony smirked. "You know, a witch and a hunter together... it's forbidden, but in every generation, two always decide to work around the rules," he glanced at me briefly before looking at Jason.

My brows furrowed as I looked at him as well. "But... your dad's a human."

Anthony laughed harder, as if he knew the funniest joke ever but wasn't sharing it with anyone.

"That's right! Well, I guess I should break the news and say, my friend, Sam Lockheart had sealed the deal with your mother all those years ago," he laughed, and my eyes widened.

Lockheart.

Adam Lockheart.

Oh no.

My eyes moved to Jason, who was grinding his teeth at the realization.

"That has to be a lie!" I struggled to say. "His parents are madly in love," I reasoned.

However, Anthony just shrugged. "I didn't say their romance was filled with love."

My breath was cut short by what he meant by that.

"She was raped," I breathed out with a shaky whisper.

♡

Anthony left shortly after thankfully, because the last thing I wanted was for Jason to get killed before I could figure out a plan to save him.

When five came, I laced my fingers with each other so I resisted the urge to bite my nails in stress.

When the door opened, Lucas, who was sitting next to me, stood up tensely, and Jason, who was leaning his back against the wall next to the door, straightened, but his eyes flashed with anger when he saw who it was.

Adam entered the room, and looked at me worriedly. "Are you okay?" He asked when he noticed my stressed expression.

My lips parted, but no sound came out.

It was at that point Adam looked around his surroundings, and when his eyes caught Jason's, Jason threw his fist across Adam's cheek, causing him to stumble against the wall next to the door.

Adam held his cheek for a split second before straightening, turning around to send Jason a hard glare. "What the fuck was that for?"

"Ask your fucking dad," Jason snarled, and my heart broke slightly by the sound of his voice wavering.

He stared at him with confusion before glancing at me.

I figured if he knew we were both hybrids, he would connect the dots about Jason.

I knew he understood the situation when his eyes flashed with anger before leaving the room with the door slamming shut behind him.

When Adam was out of the room, I rushed to Jason and inspected his fist, that already seemed to be forming bruises.

"Jesus Christ, Jason," I hissed as I moved to the door, opening it slightly until Omar came into my view.

"Can you please bring a first aid kit," I asked, and he nodded once before walking down the hall.

Once he was out of view, I closed the door and listened in to Lucas' low grumbles.

"I'm going to fucking kill everyone here," Lucas whispered to himself, and I sighed.

Standing next to him, I laced my fingers with his, causing him to look at me with his eyes widened by only millimeters.

Our moment ended when the door opened, revealing a hand sticking out of the door with the first aid in their hold.

Quickly, I took it out of Omar's grasp, and moved in front of Jason, who was currently sitting on the chair across the room, glancing every few seconds at his fist.

Noticing a few cuts, I opened the first aid and pulled out the rubbing alcohol before basically dumping it on his fist.

Jason hissed in pain, and I shook my head as I continued to wrap the bandage around his fist.

"How do you even know how to do this?" Jason laughed, mesmerized by my actions.

"I don't," I laughed. "I'm just winging it."

♡

After Adam left, he didn't show his face for the rest of the day, which I could only assume that it was because he found about his long lost half-brother.

Once I finished bandaging Jason's fist, Omar and Victor came through the door, telling me that they have been instructed to take me back to my room for the time being.

Of course, I didn't go without a fight.

For hours, I ignored everyone on the other side of the door and I resisted the urge to bite my finger nails in fear.

Hours weren't enough time for me to come up with an plan.

I refused to go down for dinner, already knowing that if food came in my mouth, it would come out minutes later forcefully.

When my door opened, I wasn't surprised to see Anthony standing casually by the door frame.

"It's time," he said blankly, and I bit my lower lip to see that it's almost midnight on the clock in my room — also known to me as prison.

My jaw clenched as I turned back to Anthony, who seemed to be smiling smugly.

"Why would you do this?" I whispered with disbelief. "I'm your daughter."

Anthony sighed, uncrossing his arms. "You're not going to die tonight, Emma. Stop being melodramatic."

"But one of my best friends are!" I shouted in retort, and his eyebrows raised.

"You only have one choice here. Kill Jason, and Lucas walks free," he explained as if that choice was so simple.

Go to hell, I wanted to say. But I knew that if my mouth wasn't about to have a filter, that may take both of their lives.

"Let's just go," I grumbled, walking passed him with my head hung low so he couldn't see my mind churning with thoughts.

Anthony jogged so he was in front of me, guiding us both downstairs to the front of the house before turning left on the side of the grand staircase.

I lost count by how many doors I've passed until we stopped in front of a secluded wooden door.

Anthony opened it slowly, and I gasped by the sight in front of me.

By the far end of the wall in front of the entrance, Lucas was unconscious, while being tied to a chair with a metal chain.

Jason, however, was still in his metal cuffs that locked his powers while he was sitting in front of a pole.

His hands were tied with rope around the pole as he continued to thrash around, hoping to get untied.

But I didn't miss the man in the shadows who was holding a gun, directing it to Lucas' head.

My breathing stopped as I watched him take his gun off of safety.

Anthony forcefully moved me to stand in front of Jason, and his eyes widened slightly when he saw me.

On the other side of the tape on his mouth, I heard him trying to form words, but I didn't have to understand what he was saying.

I already knew the words he wished he could say.

"Do it, Emma," Anthony demanded, shoving the gun into my dominant hand.

My eyes stayed on Jason and he slowly nodded, and for a second, I let myself be weak.

A single tear trailed down my cheek slowly, and he looked at Lucas' unconscious body before looking at me once more.

His eyes fluttered shut before his head went low, and my gaze moved to Lucas momentarily.

Lucas' blond hair was ruffled up, and his icy blue eyes were closed, not letting me be able to get trapped in them once more.

"Do it," Anthony repeated again, his voice more cold than it was previously.

Lifting up the gun, I hoped that I could find an angle to shoot Jason free, but I didn't have any contact to the rope holding his hands together.

My hand began to shake enormously when the gun aimed at Jason.

Just as my finger was fluttering to the trigger, Jason opened his eyes slightly, and I couldn't help but choke on a sob.

"I can't," I said running behind Jason to untie the rope that's keeping his hands together while looking to Anthony pleadingly.

"Just make him kill me!" I shouted in suggestion once I untied Jason, and Jason grunted, but I kept my eyes on Anthony who only glared.

"That wasn't the option, Emma," he spoke low, and I was ready to drop on my knees to beg him to let me die.

"Please! Just let them both live. If Jason kills me, you get a hybrid with double the powers."

Anthony didn't look up to it as he began to glare. "It's either Jason, or Lucas. Pick," he said once before lifting up my gun for me and aiming it at Jason.

My jaw clenched as a thought passed through me, and I quickly aimed my gun at Anthony, pressing the trigger with no regret.

However, as the bullet was flying, it was as though time went by slow as Anthony directed the bullet to the wall, only scraping Jason's shoulder slightly.

My eyes widened when Anthony's furious blue eyes met mine.

"What is with each pair of hybrids?" He grumbled to himself before narrowing his eyes to the man in the shadows.

"Kill him," he ordered, nodding his head once to Lucas before leaving.

Before I could turn around, a shot rang through the room, and I held back my sob as I watched blood escape from the hole on his chest.

My hand went flying to my mouth and tears streamed down my cheeks.

The man left the room quietly, and I quickly took the chains off of Lucas before making him lie on the floor.

I fell down to my knees before cupping his cheek. "Lucas," I sobbed.

No response came, and I already knew that it wouldn't come, ever again.
