âWhat do you take me for?â Rakna growled. âIâm not some gun for hire. What kind of target would you even need me to take out? You are, for all intents and purposes, a ruler of the System.â
âYouâre being mean again,â Eva said exaggeratedly and he kneaded his forehead.
âSpit it out.â
The little girl rolled her eyes. âFine. The target is someone that is both in and out of my reach.â
âHow so?â
âThis is rhetorical, but have you heard of Plateau Zero, Big Brother?â She asked as she started tip-toeing around him. âAnd I donât mean the Tutorial Plateau. Shortly said, itâs an extra Plateau that should not have existed. To be honest with you, there are three such Plateaus in the System. The Celestial Plateau, home of the Gods, the Eonian Plateau, home of the Immortals, and finally, the Arena Plateau, home of Crime. The last one is what we call the True Plateau Zero.â
âHome of Crime?â Rakna raised an eyebrow. âWhat kind of place has that name?â
âWell, obviously, the home of criminals,â Eva shrugged. âPlateau Zero is a flaw in the program that has been taken advantage of a thousand years ago. Now, some people use it as their own territory, separated from mine. Itâs become their playground. In there, the System has no influence to speak of and I canât monitor it. I canât send my Adjudicators either.â
âSo, what do you want me to do? Kill the one in charge of that place? Before even asking if I accept or not, how would I even be able to assassinate a veteran Host? Much less an entire organization.â
âActually, killing that guy is the secondary objective. Your target as a whole would be to dismantle the Arena. To do that, you will kill Bora Quaso, infiltrate his territory, and bring a certain item that I will give you to an offline Terminal that should be there. It will give me direct access and I will be able to bring the Plateau back under my control.â
Rakna sighed. âYou havenât answered the most important question. How? And why me?â
âDidnât you hear what I said, Big Brother?â Eva retorted with a tilt of her head. âThe System has no influence there. In other words, there, no one has its support. They canât use skills, magic, or even items. Even their attributes are reinitialized to their base value if theyâre not the product of their own efforts and Nirvana Skills become somewhat limited depending on their nature.â
âSo, we would be put on equal ground, huh?â Rakna remarked and blankly stared at her. âAnd you keep answering my questions in delay. So, Iâll ask you again; why me?â
Eva raised one finger. âFirst of all, youâre not a well-known figure in the System and you wouldnât be easily compromised down there. Thankfully, the matter of the Abyss Téras wasnât made public or it would have been complicated. Though⦠considering how you are, that will probably become a moot point in the future. I donât know if youâre an attention seeker or something but Iâd be willing to bet you will become very famous in the next few months.â
ââ¦â
âSo, other than that, itâs because youâre an expert.â
âAt what?â
âSlaughter.â The little girl flashed a grin that didnât match her stature.
Higure and Fray looked at each other nervously before turning toward Rakna who had fallen silent at the Super AIâs words.
Eva giggled. âBut the main reason is the fact that the only things usable in Plateau Zero are racial traits and soul power. And you have a lot to spare, donât you? To top it all off, your âScavengerâ skill makes it that your attributes are entirely yours and not a resource of the System.â
ââ¦what do I get from this?â Rakna ultimately responded.
âEh? As I said, I will forgive you-â
âStop with the bullshit,â he interrupted her and Eva froze before noticing the flickering eyes of the therian as well as the faint wave of energy spreading around the volcanic star in the sky.
âDonât think that I donât know your type. Youâre trying to get something out of me without cost after getting the opportunity to do so,â Rakna uttered coldly. âWe both know that youâre not mad about the Dungeon. So, stop pretending. If I do that for you, I want something in return.â
Eva pouted and sat down in the field of flowers, which somehow did not become damaged in the slightest. âFine! What do you want? Tell me.â
Rakna snorted and raised two fingers. âThere are two things I want.â
âReally?â Eva deadpanned. âDonât you think youâre pushing it?â
âFirst; I want a one-time claiming right for any parcel of wild terrain that I will find in the future, regardless of the Plateau,â Rakna said, ignoring her rebuffs. âSecond; I want you to give Host rights to Marie.â
Evaâs eyes widened. âW-wait a second! The first is easy but the second is a no can do. I canât mess with the database like that. It could create massive flaws that could be exploited to do things way worse than Plateau Zero.â
âI donât care. Do you agree or not?â
âCanât you just ask for a Gold Item or something?â
âNo.â
Eva groaned and pressed her hands on her head. âUmuâ¦! Gah! Fine, Iâll do it!â
âIn that case, I accept your request. Give me more information about that Arena. Also, I want the payment to be done in advance.â
âYou-! Thereâs no guarantee you will succeed so why would I do that?!â The little girl grumbled. âI knew I should have asked someone elseâ¦â
âWhat? I wasnât your first choice?â
âNo, precisely, you ARE my first choice. And now Iâm hesitating whether I should go for my second one. Despite your ability,â she huffed and stood up before dusting her dress. âIâll just consider this an investment,â she relented and lifted her hand with her thumb and middle finger pressed against each other. She snapped them and a system window appeared.

â
Eva extends a Quest to you.

â
â
Title: Arenaâs Demise
â
Description: Upon reaching the 100th Plateau, you will be able to find a criminal organization under the name of Kratos. Their leader, Bora Quaso, owns Plateau Zero and holds an event within it called Arena Zero.
It is a fighting exhibit which many influential figures gamble on and use as a negotiation stage. It is also a covert operation for all sorts of criminal exchanges and traffics involving both Hosts and Locals. Many of those are a direct infringement of the Systemâs laws.
â
Objective: Enter Arena Zero as a participant, locate Bora Quaso and kill him, then find access to the Terminal for Eva to take over. The time limit will be set to three months.
â
Rewards (Will be given upfront): Mae -Marie- Maria Gorgonaâs Host Privileges, One-Time Terrain Claim.
â
Failure Penalty: Compensation for the rewards. Interest will be applied and the giver of the Quest will personally evaluate a satisfactory indemnity for the receiver to honor.
â
â
â
Do you accept?
Yes/No
â
â® â â¯
â
ââ¦why is âyesâ grayed out?â Rakna raised an eyebrow after reading the details of the Quest.
âBecause the agreement is leaning too much in your favor for now,â Eva replied as if it was obvious.
Rakna eyed her with a blank expression. âYouâre quite business literate for a brat,â he said and his soul tenants all had the urge to cough.
âWerenât you the one who said we shouldnât take her as a child?â Higure retorted internally. She did not dare to say it out loud though.
âAnd how come those rewards donât cut it when Iâm risking my life?ân/o/vel/b//in dot c//om
Eva puffed her cheeks and stomped the ground. âYou have no idea how risky it is to modify the very existence of that lamia,â she complained.
Rakna grunted and rubbed the bridge of his nose. âAnd what would make you happy?â
âWhat can you offer?â The loli smirked.
He exhaled and breathed in before opening his mouth, âHow about a favor?â He suggested and she looked at him weirdly.
âWhy would I need a favor from you?â
âReally? Youâre asking me that in this situation?â Rakna deadpanned. âArenât you the one begging for my help right now?â
âIâm not begging!â
âSemantics. From what Iâm getting, while you do have quite the power with your Adjudicators and your control of System mechanics, youâre not omnipotent. To the extent that you would even be scared of a Host.â
âI said I wasnât scared!â
âSure.â
âAh! Youâre annoying!â Eva snapped. She was close to pulling out her hair. âAnd how am I supposed to be sure that you will uphold your promise?â
Rakna raised an eyebrow. âWhy canât you just use a Compulsory Quest like earlier?â
âIt doesnât work like that. The only reason I was allowed to give you that one was because, while you did not break any rule, you made a transgression to the Dungeonâs integrity. It was temporary right accorded to me to ascertain your motive.â
âBy any chance⦠do you happen to have superiors?â Rakna asked curiously.
âSort of. I have co-workers and superiors. Most are unknown to the masses and I donât intend to tell you about them so forget about it.â
âHm, I see,â Rakna mused. âYouâre breaking out of character, by the way.â
âAh, shit!â She exclaimed and cleared her throat before schooling her emotions. She then let out a perfect childish smile. âSo, Big Brother, is there something else you can offer?â
âNo, Iâll still offer the same thing,â Rakna retorted and closed his eyes for a moment. The air inside his soul realm became heavier and the sound of the riverâs waves resounded louder.
Evaâs expression suddenly froze as if she had seen something unbelievable. Higure and Fray also seemed to be shocked. The field of flowers was being swayed by the wind and several petals flew off to mix with the black ones.
â[I, Rakna Xiorra Blade, Decree Upon My Soul. I will owe a debt to the one known as Eva for as long as she honors her part of the deal.]â
As soon as these words left the therianâs mouth, a spiral of white fire formed in the sky before disappearing as fast as it came, along with the irregular wind and waves of the river.
âWhyâ¦?â Eva muttered. âWhy would you put your life on the line for some stranger? That lamia is just restricted to the Tenth, nothing too bad. There is no reason to go this far to help her.â
âDo you know the feeling of being trapped?â Rakna uttered. âThe feeling of having no reign on your life? The feeling of being at the mercy of someone else? The feeling of standing in front of freedom and have it escape your fingers? The emotion that you call despair?â
ââ¦â
âYou shouldnât be asking me why Iâm willing to do this. You should be asking why she deserves that I do it,â he said and waved his hand, expecting Obsidianâs Smoke to appear in his hand. When nothing came, he clicked his tongue. âI canât use it in hereâ¦â
âTo go as far as to use Vow of Accord and put your soul on the lineâ¦â Eva spoke up. âDo you have a hero complex, Big Brother?â
âWhatever you want to call it, brat.â
The little girl harrumphed. ââ¦you better not die or itâll be a loss for me,â she said and Rakna saw the window of the Quest go out before reappearing as accepted. âThere. The lamia is now a Host, you can check with her, and the claiming right in your storage. You have three months. I know that youâre plenty able to get to the 100th Plateau in around one to two months from now if you try enough.â
âWeâll see,â Rakna replied and closed the Quest. âAre we done?â
âYep, you are free to leave, Big Brother. Just focus on the feeling you usually experience when you exit your soul realm. Youâll wake up in the Pavilion.â
âAll right. And stop calling me Big Brother. Why do you even do that?â
Eva giggled with her hand over her mouth. âBut you are my Big Brother. Why would I call you any other way?â She retorted and stuck out her tongue before disintegrating into motes of light. Rakna frowned at her declaration then sighed loudly. He exited his soul realm without a word afterward.
After a short moment of silence, Fray opened his fan with a hum. âWell, I am quite pleased to have finally met the face behind âEvaâ. She is even rowdier than I imagined.â
âYou donât say,â Higure agreed and Fenriu yawned from the side.
â

When Rakna regained consciousness inside the Terminal Room, the lights were already back on and the door was opened. He quietly left and returned to the entrance of the corridor. When he reached the Pavilionâs Hall, he immediately heard something quite unexpected.
He then noticed that everyone seemed to be rooted in place, staring at something above them. He mimicked them and was honestly startled to see a sky darkened by thunder clouds and pouring a strong rain on the glass ceiling.
ââ¦the heck?â
