Chapter 19 Reelecting the Chairman It was good that Lena was here. It saved Melanie the trouble of looking for her.
Melanie walked past the reporters and overheard their questions.
âLena, Melanie Jones is your manager and your cousin. Why is she competing with you for a spot at the International Socialites Gala? Are you not getting along?â
âHow was she selected by the judges? Is there some foul play involved?â
Lena, with an innocent expression, exclaimed, âNo way! It must be a misunderstanding. Melanie isnât like that. Sheâs a capable person with great ideas. Over the past two years, sheâs the one whoâs sealed all of my business deals. She even manages things in Jones Enterprise. Sheâs amazing.â
âAre you saying Melanie Jones has the support of Jones Enterprise and knows how to get things done behind the scenes?â The reporters interpreted Lenaâs implications perfectly.
Lena covered her mouth with her hand, pretending to have made a slip of the tongue. Her assistant stepped in to protect her, saying.â Please stop asking. Lena is very naive when it comes to business matters.â
Melanie continued walking past the crowd, a hint of mockery on her lips. What a show Lena was putting on!
She did not have time to bother with Lenaâs insinuations. Let Lena dance happily a little longer. Melanie was eager to see how Lena would continue her innocent act when her misdeeds were exposed to the entire Harbor City.
Melanie took the elevator directly to the meeting room on the top floor.
As she turned the corner, she heard her uncle, Daniel Jones, shouting discontentedly, âWe canât even handle womenâs perfume property. and now we want to dive into menâs perfume? Itâs absurd! Whose ridiculous proposal is this?â
âThat would be me.â
Melanie pushed the door open, the crisp sound of her cane against the floor announcing her arrival. Mr. Lincoln hurried over to welcome her and pulled out a chair for her. Melanie nodded to her mother.
Seeing Melanieâs involvement, Daniel was visibly frustrated. âDo you have any idea where the company stands right now? Must you destroy the legacy left by your father? I propose we reelect the chairman!â
In response, several factions loyal to Daniel echoed his sentiments.
âWhy?â Melanie asked.
âYour mother has been occupying the chairmanâs position without bringing about proper results. This is the voice of the board!â
Daniel Jones continued to set the tone.
Melanie sneered. âAnd are you any more capable, Uncle Daniel? Why donât you share your accomplishments?â
âI...â
Daniel Jones was momentarily speechless.
However, he had a hidden agenda for this meeting. Fearing Melanie would disrupt things, he chose to take a more aggressive stance.â Anyway, all the directors are here today! Letâs vote right now. Those in favor of reelecting the chairman, raise your hands!â
Daniel was the first to raise his hand.
As the chairman, Eliza Jones held no voting power. Daniel Jones smugly looked across the table. Many of his loyal supporters raised their hands, collectively owning more than half of the shares.
He adjusted his tie, his mind began daydreaming about his reign as chairman. âSee, this is the voice of the majority!â
âI disagree.â
Melanie calmly raised her gaze. âWithout my agreement, your shares donât add up to a majority.â
1/2 +15 BONUS Danielâs expression shifted from one of triumph to anger. âAre you a shareholder? What right do you have to disagree? Itâs impossible not to have a majority!â
He grinned at the groupâs corporate lawyer, instructing. âTell her, Mr. Reynolds! Have her accept reality!â
