Chapter 316 A Good-looking Couple Nathanâs tone suddenly changed. He looked as though he was replying to Melanie, but Melanie knew that he was targeting Jeffrey.
She turned around, and put her wine glass down before leaving. âIâm sorry, but please excuse me.â
With that, she returned to the banquet hall, leaving the two men to face off on the balcony.
âThankfully, my adoptive mother is fine. Otherwise, we wouldnât be standing here talking to each other today!â
Nathanâs bloodshot eyes were filled with threatening rage. âJeffrey Morgan, I didnât expect you to go against me for the sake of that woman!â
âSheâs fine because I engaged the best doctor for her,â Jeffrey said unflinchingly.
âSo should I be thanking you instead?â
âNo need for that.â Jeffrey went on with a look of disdain, âI engaged a doctor for her simply because I donât want to implicate the innocent. It doesnât mean Iâm trying to keep a backdoor open for myself and keep our alliance alive.â
Nathan was angered by Jeffreyâs unyielding stance. âVery well! I never expected you to become someone I have to deal with!â
âHave you been dealing with many people in secret?â Jeffrey suddenly looked keenly at Nathan. âDid you send someone to Harbor City to investigate Melanieâs father?â
âHa, ha, ha!â
Nathan paused for a moment before breaking out into cold, wild laughter.
âJeffrey Morgah, youâre quite a joke! Who was the one who swore to make anyone who hurt Emma suffer ten times the pain?
Has the one who hurt her now become such a treasure to you that I canât even investigate?â
âIâm just warning you not to be foolish no matter what you do, lest you alert the enemy and foil my plan!â Jeffrey narrowed his eyes as he warned Nathan coldly.
âHmph.â Nathan scoffed. âYou sound so genuine. Is that plan of yours still in effect?â
âYou donât need to worry about that,â Jeffrey spat coldly, shooting Nathan a look of disdain.
Melanie walked around the bend and looked back. The night wind blew against the curtains and the shadows of both men intertwined.
She went on walking back to the banquet hall in search of a quiet corner to settle down in. Yet, she unwittingly locked gazes with Leo.
It would seem too pretentious to dodge his gaze. She had no choice but to walk over and smile politely at him. âMr. York, pardon me for not being able to work with you this time.â
1/2 +15 BONUS âAllâs fair in love and business. It was my fault for being late, so you donât need to feel bad,â Leo said with a wave of his hand.
âYou, on the other hand, demonstrated the sincerity of Jones Enterprise. Iâll definitely keep an eye out for opportunities to work with you in the future.â
âSure,â Melanie replied courteously. She changed the subject as subtly as she could. âMr. York, you must have a packed schedule during your visit here at Harbor City?â
Leo was about to answer Melanie when a womanâs voice cut in, breaking the harmonious atmosphere.
âNo matter how busy, Mr. York should come out for some fresh air and relax, just like today.â
âOne has to be in a relaxed mood to meet a perfect partner to do enjoyable things together,â Grace said as she walked over, smiling pretentiously at Leo.
The air chilled in an instant. No one seemed to want to answer Grace.
Yet, Graceâs mind was occupied by Duke Wilhelmâs threat. She couldnât be bothered by the awkward situation she found herself in.
She went on, âI was chatting with a few ladies upstairs, and saw Mr. York and Ms. Jones standing together. We were all talking about what a good-looking couple you two make!â
âIs that so?â Leo coughed as he glanced at Grace.
At that moment, he understood why something went wrong with Duke Wilhelmâs card. This troublesome brat must have been behind it!
Grace caused him to lose a deal and a chance to get close to Melanie. Was she trying to make things better? He would never spare her so easily!
