Chapter 401 Whom Do I Trust âMy dad...â
Melanie staggered, her vision darkening for a moment.
âAre you saying that my fatherâs death was not accidental, but a murder instead?â
Nathan neither confirmed nor denied it. âIn Harbor City, who can compare to Jeffrey when it comes to manipulating the situation and covering up crimes?â
After calming down, Melanie asked, âWhy are you telling me all this?â
âPerhaps I havenât mustered the courage to move on from the pain of losing Emma. Thatâs why I value you so much. I donât want you to be deceived by Jeffrey,â Nathan said solemnly.
âBut I heard that you and Jeffrey were as close as brothers back then...â Melanie trailed off.
Nathanâs eyes flickered for a moment before he replied, âIn the past year, weâve had too many disagreements. Our goals and paths have diverged. Things are not as they used to be.â
âI suppose the disagreements between you two are because of me?â Melanie said calmly, poker-faced. âThe relationship between the three of us is intricate and hard to unravel. Whether itâs Jeffrey or you, I hope we can coexist peacefully in the future, and minimize conflicts as much as possible.â
After saying this, she turned and left.
If Nathan really didnât want her to be deceived by Jeffrey, why didnât he warn her in all the time they had known each other? Instead, he waited until she exposed his plot before coming forward.
The moment she got into the car, Jeffreyâs call came in.
âDid Nathan give you a hard time?â he asked right away.
âYou should be asking if I gave him a hard time,â Melanie said confidently.
She didnât continue confronting Nathan to save his pride. If they had continued, Nathan wouldnât have been able to keep up the act for three minutes.
Jeffrey sighed in relief.
His men could only stay on the periphery, so he had no way of knowing what was happening inside the private room. Everything was fine as long as Melanie was safe.
âOn my way here, I ran into two cars coming out of the place. One was Luisâs. I recognized the license plate. The other had an unfamiliar license plate, but it should be with Luis because the two cars briefly stopped at the intersection and exchanged greetings before leaving.â
âGive me the license plate,â Jeffrey said decisively.
Melanie provided the license plate number, and added, âIt was a black Aston Martin.â
+15 BONOS âOkay, Iâll have someone check it right away.â
Luis was Nathanâs accomplice in sowing discord between them. If they could find out the owner of the other car, they might catch another conspirator.
âI have another question. Last night, Jane arrived suddenly so I didnât have a chance to ask. Who told you that my father did a heart transplant surgery secretly back then?â
âNathan,â Jeffrey answered.
Melanie wasnât surprised.
âI knew it. He just told me that. He said the surgeon who performed my surgery, Dr. Clement, informed you. He also said that after the surgery, Dr. Clement moved abroad with his family, and there has been no news since. Good thing you told me in advance. If you didnât, he could have used this against us.â
âHow did you know it was him?â Jeffrey asked.
âWith the depth of his understanding of the whole incident, he seemed more like a participant than an outsider. How could I not know?â Melanie said. She paused for a moment.
During this sudden pause, Jeffrey sensed something and asked, âDid he say anything else?â
âHow much do you know about the car accident that happened to my father?â she asked.
This time, Jeffrey fell silent.
Separated by the almost imperceptible crackling of electricity, Melanieâs heart tightened with each passing moment. She didnât know what kind of answer she was expecting.
Yet, what she feared the most might be him saying that he knew nothing about it, completely denying his involvement in this...
âCome over. Weâll talk in person.â Jeffrey finally spoke.
Half an hour later, Melanie arrived at Jeffreyâs ward.
She didnât say anything. She just sat on the sofa and waited for his answer.
âDid Nathan tell you that I hired someone to cause your fatherâs accident?â Jeffrey asked sincerely.
Melanie raised her head, neither confirming nor denying it.
A faint smile played on the corners of his lips.
âRemember when you asked me on Mount Coloss if I sent someone to investigate your father? Since then, I knew someone was looking into the past, so I sent someone to investigate as well. I found that the culprits were elusive, and had contacted the Yorks in secret.â
âThe Yorks?â Melanie frowned.
She expected to hear Nathanâs name, but how were the Yorks involved? She didnât remember her father cooperating with them when he was alive.
213 +15 BONOS âIt could also be that theyâve once worked for the Yorks, and donât actually belong to that family.â Jeffrey narrowed his eyes. âBut Iâm sure it isnât Nathanâs people.â
âNot Nathanâs people?â
âNathanâs people arenât investigating, but they might have done it. Do you understand what Iâm saying?â
Jeffrey emphasized.
Melanie bit her lipy silent. âYouâre accusing him, and heâs accusing you. How can I trust either of you?â
