âYour Majesty, you...â Shadowgale walked to Ning Xiaoyao and stared at her in her dress, his gaze frozen.
Ning Xiaoyao swept her eyes over the crowd. Everyone else was reacting more or less like the head commander. She cleared her throat and told the men, âDonât be like that. Tonight Iâm going to pretend to be Miss Jiâs little sister. Thatâs why I dressed up like this.â
âWhat?!â old General Ji Jiu exclaimed when he realized his granddaughter Yuerong was involved as well.
âItâs like this,â Ning Xiaoyao began to explain her plans with Ji Yuerong, Erya, and Xiaoqiu tonight. When she was halfway done, Ji Yuerong entered the room herself and added a few things here and there.
âSo Miss Ji will be Chen Luâs mistress, and Iâll be her younger sister. Erya is Miss Jiâs eldest daughter, while Xiaoqiu is her son,â Ning Xiaoyao concluded.
Old General Ji was floored by the plan. He only managed to ask, âWhoâs the father?â
âChen Lu, ah,â Ji Yuerong answered.
Old General Ji nearly toppled backwards. Although he knew this was all an act, it was still intolerable to hear such words from her mouth! âYou,â the general looked between his granddaughter and Ning Xiaoyao. âCanât a palace maid do something like this instead?â
âNo,â Ning Xiaoyao shook her head. âNone of them can afford to shoulder a thrashing.â
â......â said everyone else. Thatâs right. Chen Luâs wife is a tigress. If a delicate palace maid played the role instead, sheâd never be able to take a slap.
âI was originally planning to play the mistress myself,â Ning Xiaoyao added. âBut Iâm not beautiful enough. Iâm afraid Chen Luâs wife wonât believe me if I tell her.â
âWonât believe what?â the Lord Protector asked dazedly.
âShe would think, how could a girl who looks like this ever have seduced Chen Lu in the first place?â Ning Xiaoyao said with a shrug.
âThe face is convincing enough,â Ji Yuerong got straight to the point. âBut not the figure.â
Ning Xiaoyao only looked at her in silence.
So youâre doing it in his place instead? Old General Ji looked at his granddaughter with a pained expression. A girl running off to play someone elseâs mistress. If news of this spreads, how will my granddaughter ever marry?
âAre you displeased?â Ning Xiaoyao asked after studying Old General Jiâs expression. He didnât answer, because he knew his granddaughter wouldnât heed his words anyways.
âThen itâs set,â Ning Xiaoyao clapped. âTonight weâll only aim for success, not failure.â
All of the men nodded their heads, then went back to staring at Ning Xiaoyao. Theyâd probably never get a chance to see their Majesty like this again after today. Lou Zigui strode forward and had Ning Xiaoyao sit on a chair. But the menâs gazes followed her there. Supreme Commander Lou tried to block them, but discovered it was impossible. In the end, he began to divvy up tasks for them instead to get them out as fast as possible. Once everyone left to fulfill their orders and Old General Ji took Miss Ji away, only he and Ning Xiaoyao remained in the room. Finally, he turned to look at her.
Ning Xiaoyao unconsciously straightened up in her seat. Lou Ziguiâs expression wavered between nothing and a smile, leaving her feeling uncertain.
âWhat does that mean?â she asked.
âYou have to be careful tonight,â Lou Zigui finally spok
âAh? Oh.â Ning Xiaoyao nodded. How could I not be careful when Iâm taking Erya and Xiaoqiu for a beating?
âChen Luâs wife might be rough, but itâs impossible to hope that sheâll kill Xie Wenyuan,â Lou Zigui said lightly. âThis doesnât just involve her and Chen Lu, but the Chen Clan and her own maternal clan. She wouldnât have the guts to pay for Xie Wenyuanâs life with the lives of both clans.â
Ning Xiaoyao rolled her eyes. âAm I as malicious as that? Even if that wife wants to kill him, Iâll have to stop her myself. An emperor like me canât even kill the Grand Preceptor whenever I want, so how could I let her steal that chance from me?â
âAlright,â Lou Zigui amended quickly. âI know. Xiaoyao, youâre not that kind of villain.â
âThatâs right,â Ning Xiaoyao replied.
Lou Zigui bent down and kissed her on the forehead, then said, âIâll go write a little to Xu Feiyu. Tonight Iâll come with you.â
âDonât,â Ning Xiaoyao said hastily. âThe Grand Preceptor will recognize you even if youâve burned to ashes. Supreme Commander, you should escort the empress out of the city instead. Thatâs important, too.â
âArenât you afraid that Xie Wenyuan will recognize you instead?â
âNope,â Ning Xiaoyao said. âIâm short, so Iâll vanish from sight as soon as I stand into a crowd. Moreover, how could my face be this clean after I tussle with Chen Luâs wife? When the time comes, Iâll have a completely dirty face. The Grand Preceptor would be a monster if he recognized me then.â
Lou Zigui knit his brows. âYouâre going to take a beating?â
âIâll do my best not to,â Ning Xiaoyao replied. âDonât worry. Iâm a miracle doctor. Even a stabbing couldnât kill me, so what does a thrashing count for?â
Lou Zigui forced his worries down before brushing at the stray hairs on her forehead. âIâll have Old Huo and the rest make preparations.â
âFine,â Ning Xiaoyao agreed. âThe more people we have, the bigger row we can make. Our goal is to trap the Grand Preceptor at Fangqi Lane until heâs forced to call his subordinates for help.â
Lou Ziguiâs hand trailed down until it stopped Ning Xiaoyaoâs face. It almost looked as if he was going to kiss her on the lips before he turned to leave.
âLooks like charm only leads to grief,â Ning Xiaoyao muttered to herself from her chair. What to do? Iâm not happy. She decided to take a trip to the little kitchens and see if Chef Huang had finished making her nourishing soup yet.
Two hours later, Ning Xiaoyao ate herself half full of soup straight from the point before leaving with Ji Yuerong, Erya, and Xiaoqiu out of the palace. At a street near Fangqi Lane, they stopped to eat Chef Huangâs pastries while waiting for the last of the sun to set and the city lanterns to go on.
âThe Grand Preceptorâs here,â Ning Xiaoyao pointed Ji Yuerong and Erya towards the western end of the land as she spoke with a mouth full of sugar beans.
âYouâre still looking?â Ji Yuerong pulled Ning Xiaoyao behind the wall. What would they do if Xie Wenyuan discovered them early? Erya used one hand to muffle her own mouth while the other cover Xiaoqiuâs. Meanwhile, the row of people from the Grand Preceptorâs estate strolled past them, never noticing the four figured huddled in the shadows of the alleyway.
âEight people are carrying his sedan chair,â Ning Xiaoyao said in dissatisfaction. âHeâs only a skinny old man. Does he need that many carriers?â
âIn the future, heâll need eight coffin bearers instead,â Ji Yuerong said even more viciously. âThatâs why he needs those eight to get used to carrying him while heâs still alive. Otherwise, what would he do if they startle his ghost with their carry after death?â
Ning Xiaoyaoâs round face twitched in response to Ji Yuerongâs words. This girl is even blunter than me!
âWhat is it?â Ji Yuerong asked.
âNothing,â Ning Xiaoyao wiped her face and changed the topic. âI wonder when Chen Luâs wife will show up?â
Who knows?
âThatâs right, whatâs her name, ah?â Ning Xiaoyao asked.
âSheâs from the Xu Clan,â Ji Yuerong replied.
âDonât know them,â Ning Xiaoyao shook her head.
âNée Xu is the eldest daughter of Xu Jing,[1. Xu Jing (许é) - Xu is a surname that means âpromise, praise/approve, allow permit,â Jing means âmake tranquil, pacify.â] ah.â
âOh,â Ning Xiaoyao replied. âWhoâs Xu Jing?â
âHeâs a powerful and mighty general,â Ji Yuerong said with a wooden face. âHe controls the largest military barracks amongst the 36 battalions stationed in the capital city and its environs. He commands the most soldiers in Xie Wenyuanâs faction. Your Majesty, you donât even know Xu Jing?â
â.......â said Ning Xiaoyao. I didnât even know the capital had 36 battalions to begin with, so how would I know Xu Jing?
âAye,â Ji Yuerong suddenly sighed as she came to her own conclusions. âI suppose Xie Wenyuan wouldnât have let you known these things. Mm, that must be it.â
âYes,â Ning Xiaoyao nodded with a straight face. âItâs all the Grand Preceptorâs fault.â
Ji Yuerong stopped fretting over the details, while Ning Xiaoyao spat in Grand Preceptorâs direction. That old manâs too vile! (Author: Do you think the Grand Preceptor could have hide something like this? Donât blame the Grand Preceptor when itâs you yourself not being thorough enough. o(â¯â¡â°)o)
âIâm really worried that née Xu will beat us to death,â Ji Yuerong said nervously as the night grew darker. She couldnât help but confide her fears to Ning Xiaoyao. âShe really will, you know.â
âGirl, youâre a soldier too,â Ning Xiaoyao didnât understand why Ji Yuerong would get anxious now. You werenât afraid the last time you fought in a war, so why fear fighting with somebodyâs wife now?
âI canât beat Chen Lu in a fight,â Ji Yuerong finally admitted. âAnd Chen Lu canât beat née Xu, so I definitely wonât be able to defeat née Xu either.â
Ning Xiaoyao patted herself on the chest. âDonât worry, Iâm here.â
âBut can we even fight back?â Ji Yuerong mused. âIf we beat up née Xu too badly, how is she supposed to kill her way to Chen Lu and make him pay?â
(â︿â) , went Ning Xiaoyao. Thatâs right, weâre supposed to get beat up.
âSomeoneâs coming,â Erya called out softly. Ning Xiaoyao and Ji Yuerong quickled turned to look into the street, where stewards, servant girls, and old nanny types were clustered around a small sedan chair carried by two people coming down the lane.
âIs née Xu coming?â Ning Xiaoyao asked.
âShould be,â Ji Yuerong answered.
âThen shall we go?â Ning Xiaoyao asked.
Ji Yuerong steadied her breathing before picking up Xiaoqiu and dashing into the middle of the street. Ning Xiaoyao took Erya by the hand and slowly followed behind her. She could feel her body aching for the expected beating again.
âWhoâs there?â the foremost steward in front called out when he saw people blocking the road.
âI forgot to ask, what should my last name be?â Ji Yuerong asked Ning Xiaoyao. How am I supposed to be a mistress without a proper name?
âYour last name is Ji, ah,â Ning Xiaoyao said.
âI canât use Ji, change it to something else,â Ji Yuerong was insistent on that point.
âHow about Ning?â
Ji Yuerong shook her head. She didnât dare borrow that one, either.
âThe audacity! You have some nerve!â the steward crowed again when neither of the two woman answered him.
âTry Xiang,â Erya said, offering her own last name.
âThis little woman is surnamed Xiang,â Ji Yuerong said immediately.
âWhich Xiang?â one of the head nannies stepped forward and surveyed Ji Yuerong and Ning Xiaoyao from head to toe. âWe donât recognize it. What business have you here?â
Ji Yuerong had never done something as shoddy as this and found herself speechless before the nannyâs questions. Ning Xiaoyao stuck her nose in the air and gave a snort. âMy big sister is Great General Chenâs wife. A servant like you should treat us with more respect!â
The group before them fell silent.
âXiaoqiu, call for mother,â Ning Xiaoyao tugged on Xiaoqiuâs pant leg.
âMother,â Xiaoqiu hugged Ji Yuerong around the neck before added like a natural, âI want daddy.â
The group before them remained silent, but now expressions of fright were on their faces. The general not only had a mistress, but a son with her as well?!
