Chapter 133 Ruby hurried back to her apartment after leaving the Dixon family estate. This place, though modest, was the sanctuary she had hastily arranged upon returning from abroad.
As she opened the door, a soft, tiny figure wobbled toward her.
"Sweetheart, slow down! Careful not to trip!" Rubyâs voice softened as she knelt to scoop up her little girl, Belle. Deciding to keep Belle had been the best decision of her life-this angel was her most precious gift. From the moment Belle was born, she had been a remarkably gentle baby who rarely cried and was easy to soothe.
"Mommy, hug, hug!" Belleâs chubby hands reached up eagerly. "Miss Dixon, welcome back," Carla, the nanny, greeted warmly, stepping out of the kitchen.
"Iâm back, Carla. You can head home early today," Ruby replied, setting Belle down for a moment.Carla Hurst "Thank you, Miss Dixon. Have a good evening," Carla said before leaving.
With Belle securely in her lap, Ruby fed her daughter some baby food while her mind raced. The recording device she had secretly used at the Dixon family home was useless-Emilyâs precautions had turned it into a garbled mess of interference.
Emily was just as cautious as ever, even after all these years. Ruby clenched her jaw. Rescuing her mother was her priority, and for that, sheâd have to play along with Emilyâs demands-for now. "Ba... ba... ba..." Belle babbled, her tiny voice breaking Rubyâs dark thoughts.
"Whatâs that, sweetie? Are you trying to say something?" Ruby asked, her tone suddenly light and cheerful.
"Ba... ba..." Belle waved her little hands excitedly.
Ruby checked Belleâs diaper, puzzled. "No stinky diaper. Hmm... Are you saying âpapaâ?"
Belle laughed joyfully, clapping her hands. "Ba-ba!"
Rubyâs heart sank as realization hit. Her daughter, so small yet so perceptive, was asking for a father. A pang of guilt tightened in her chest.
"Sweetheart," Ruby whispered, her voice barely steady, "you donât need anyone else. I can protect you, always."
But deep down, she wondered if that was true. âWhat if Belle grows older and feels the absence of a father more acutely? What if...
Ruby shook her head, her resolve hardening. After rescuing Mom, weâll leave. Thereâs no need to linger in this city or near... him.
Back on Moreno University campus, Toby, who had been humiliated in front of everyone, simmered with anger. His face was dark as he plotted ways to get back at Danielle.
Unaware of his brewing resentment, Danielle had already returned to her dorm. A message from David popped up on her phone.
David: [Iâm outside your school. Brought you something delicious.]
Danielle: [Give me a minute. Just need to wash up.] After a quick rinse and a change of clothes, Danielle made her way to the campus gates.
Outside the gates, Audrey, who had just finished class, spotted Davidâs car parked by the curb. Her face lit up with excitement.
Turning to her friends, she said, "You guys go on ahead. Someoneâs waiting for me."
Her friends, noticing the luxury car, teased her. "Is it your fiancé, Audrey? Wow, he must really miss you to show up like this!"
"So romantic. Weâre so jealous of how much he loves you!"
Audrey blushed, her tone coy. "Donât be silly. You guys go ahead!"
Meanwhile, David sat in the car, scrolling through his phone, waiting for Danielle. His thoughts were filled with her-just a few days apart, and he missed her terribly.
"A knock on the car window snapped him out of his thoughts.
David lowered the window, only to be greeted by a suffocating wave of overly sweet perfume.
"David! Youâre here!" Audrey greeted him with an overly bright smile, her voice deliberately soft and sweet.
Davidâs expression darkened immediately. Without a word, he began to roll the window back up.
Audrey, undeterred, persisted. "David, itâs so hot outside. Can I sit in the car with you?"
Nathan, seated in the driverâs seat, had to stifle a laugh. Audreyâs tenacity was almost impressive-she seemed completely unfazed by her previous humiliations.
"David, Danielleâs still in training, right? Why donât I keep you company while you wait? Itâs just a friendly gesture," Audrey cooed, deliberately leaning forward to flaunt her assets.
"David, I know you like Danielle, but right now, Iâm really just considering you a friend. I didnât mean anything by it... I just saw you sitting alone in the car, looking so lonely. I wanted to keep you company," Audrey said, her voice soft but laced with desperation.
Nathan couldnât help but think, What am I, invisible? Why is it only David whoâs alone in the car?
Audrey rambled on, but David remained utterly unresponsive. The awkward silence stretched on, and Audrey felt her courage slipping. âHasnât David noticed my outfit?â
With a forced determination, she tugged at her clothes, lowering them slightly, before nervously blurting out, "David, can you really be so heartless?"
Davidâs expression darkened, his face like a storm cloud. Without even glancing in Audreyâs direction, he finally spoke, his voice cold and unyielding, "Youâre shameless. I have a fiancée. Get lost."
Audreyâs face turned pale. Desperation overtook her as she cried out, "David, why her? Whatever she can do, I can do better. Iâll do anything to make you happy!"
Davidâs eyes narrowed dangerously. "Do you think your familyâs status protects you from the consequences of your actions? If you keep this up, Iâll ensure you regret it."
Audreyâs face turned ashen at the words, her heart racing with frustration. She couldnât accept it. âWhy? Why was it Danielle who always got the chances? My love for David is deeper, more genuine-why couldnât I get the same opportunity? I was the one who had known him first, not Danielle. It was always Danielle, always her. Damn it.â
"David..." she whispered.
Audreyâs bravado crumbled, replaced by fear. Yet she still clung to hope, her voice trembling. "David, we had something special once. Donât let her come between us!"
Before David could respond, Danielleâs voice cut through the tension like a knife.
"What exactly was âspecialâ between you two?"
Not A Small Town Girl (Danielle and David)
ï¤Chapter 132 Audrey froze, her blood running cold. Slowly, she turned to face Danielle, whose icy gaze pinned her in place.
"Danielle!" Audrey stammered, trying to regain composure. "Youâre here already? But training isnât over yet-did you..."
Danielle crossed her arms, her tone dripping with disdain. "I came just in time, didnât I? Another minute, and youâd have started stripping in front of him."
Audreyâs face flushed red with shame.
"Shameless," David muttered under his breath, moving to stand beside Danielle.
Audrey, her voice trembling, tried to defend herself. "Danielle, youâve misunderstood! I was just saying hi to David..."
Danielle cut her off, her voice sharp.
"Misunderstood? Should I show you the door, or would you like another needle session?"
