XG 171 - Don't look into her eyes
"Aim for the zombie's head and see if it works. If they are really controlled by that female zombie, we will need to deal with her first," Kang Xunsu said.
His word was quickly passed to the other people, and they tested whether aiming at their brains actually worked. But the zombies' brain was protected by their thick skull, which became even more sturdy after being enhanced by the gene. They would need to hit harder to break the skull.
Suddenly, they miss the zombies' hearts. At least there was space between the rib cage for them to hit their heart, but the skull had no openings at all for them to slip past for their brain!
Anyway, they had no choice but to adjust to the new situation.
It was unavoidable that there were still some hiccups in between. They figured out that targeting the slow-moving zombie's head worked. But as they were already used to targeting hearts, they often slipped up and hit the empty chest.
Not everyone was fast enough to catch onto their mistake, but luckily the zombies' slow speed allowed them to save their own meat.
The one that kill the slow-moving zombies the quickest was Do Eunhyuk, who would generously shoot three bullets to the same spot to break a zombie's skull and one bullet to their brain. But Do Eunhyuk started to feel his hand cramping for shooting way longer than he used to. Missing a hand also reduced the accuracy and shooting time even if he does not need to reload.
"Little princess, you get those zombies with hearts, and leave the rest to us," Kang Xunsu told Wong Xue Guo.
She doubted there was still any with how fierce the fire was, but since using her shadow to check does not hurt, she agreed.
"Are there now different variants of zombies? Will there be flying zombies later?" A guard looked worried.
"Oi, don't say such a thing. What if it really happens?" His friend scolded him.
"But it's still better to think of that, expect it and not get overly surprised if that happens."
"Okay, just shut your mouth and continue defending our base. Don't suddenly change your job to fortune telling."
With the zombies' slow speed, some guards dared to slip further away from the gate and approach closer to kill them.
"Don't make any mistake that their bite is any less contagious!" The captain of the watch guards yelled.
"We know!" A guy with a napkin covering the lower half of his face yelled back confidently. It truly boosted his confidence in his ability when he easily brought down the slow-moving zombies with his chopper knife that he had always used during his chicken butchering days.
While some may argue that aiming the brain was harder than the heart, he supported the former. He does not need to care which spot he stabs, for as long as he used enough strength to repeatedly attack the same spot, he would definitely make the kill.
But he did not deny the time used to break the skull exposed him to danger. In his viewpoint, the types of zombies were made fairly, where their strengths and weakness were evenly distributed.
He was slowly getting used to this new method of attacking when suddenly, a neatly dressed female zombie was just before him. The black lace veil did not cover her face, and he easily saw her dry face that was a little better looking than the zombies that had decomposed rather quickly.
Immediately recognizing it was the leader of the zombies, he was delighted. He would be the one to finish the leader! He quickly raised his chopper knife and aimed at her skull, only for the zombie to move away right before the attack landed. His knife sunk deep into her shoulder, and unlike the other zombies' soggy flesh, the female zombie was harder and dry like a thick piece of jerky meat.
Even so, it should not be difficult to pull out his knife! It was insane that there was hardly any budging with the amount of strength he used to pull back his knife!
"Look... at... me."
The female zombie that suddenly spoke surprised the butcher so much that he unconsciously heeded her words.
The actions of the female zombie leader were all seen by Bee through binoculars. When Diamond guy was taken down, no one knew how he died, so this time, he purposely spied on the female zombie attentively.
His jaw dropped and became wider as he watched on. "Shit."
Butcher guy had maggots crawling out of his nose and mouth, his skin showing signs of rotting like how zombies were. Bee guessed that the Diamond guy's skin was also in the same state but the diamond-coated skin had prevented others from seeing his rotting state.
This might be the worst way to die, feeling your own body being eaten inside out while unable to do anything to stop it.
This female zombie needs to be killed quickly!
As if able to hear his thoughts, he saw the female zombie turn her head and look straight into his eyes. It was impossible for her to be able to see him at that distance, or why would she look at him, but his gut told him he was doomed.
Because he could already feel the changes happening inside his body.
"Bee?" Wonyoung, the soft-spoken guard was the first to notice when the guard dropped the binoculars to the ground loudly and took a staggering step back.
Bee slowly turned to him with tears already flowing down his ruddy cheeks. "Hyung-ah... the female zombie... very dangerous."
"What happened to you?" Wonyoung quickly held Bee upright when he started to fold over.
"I think I'm going to die," Bee confessed calmly, but the tears were not stopping at all. "She could curse people. Don't..." he coughed out some maggot that hindered his speech before continuing, "Don't look into... her eyes."
"Captain!" Horrified, Wonyoung called urgently as he swiped away the maggots that crawled out from Bee's body, but no matter how much he wiped, the number of maggots did not reduce at all.
When the captain arrived, Bee had already stopped breathing, but the maggots did not stop growing and eating his flesh from the inside.
"Where did we store the rocket launcher? Wonyoung, go and get them," the captain guard ordered harshly, looking away from Bee's body.
"You want to burn his body?" Wonyoung's voice was hoarse. It was almost unusual for the captain to ask him to be an errand boy. Every time it happened, the captain wanted to do something that would more or less be disapproved by him.
The beanie hat guard clasped Wonyoung's shoulder. "Don't blame the captain. If what Bee said was the truth, the female zombie is too powerful. Who knows if the curse could spread to others?"
Wonyoung watched as Bee's body quickly decomposed, just as more fat maggots that grew from their meal crawled out from his orifice. After closing Bee's eyes, he pushed away the maggots from his hands that want to eat him before slowly standing up with clenched fists.
"I will look for the rocket launcher." With his head lowered, Wonyoung ran back to their base building.
"I will burn the body. Captain, you should share the news with others," the beanie hat guard suggested.
The captain finally chose to use the loudspeaker even if it would bring more new zombies over because that was the fastest way to inform everyone. They must not delay as the female zombie had already reached the gates.
The people that had gone out of the base quickly got back in and locked the gates tightly.
Those people inside the base were relieved that the zombies outside would have no way of getting in because Lee Seung Hae had mended the fence just in time. Lee Seung Hae looked very pale and was sweating heavily from the amount of mending he had done. He smiled faintly as he weakly thanked the people that passed his energy bars.
Ari stared at the fence taller than a human's height and sneered.
If the entrance was no longer there, she just had to make one herself. The zombies around her lined up and grabbed onto each other to use their bodies to form a ladder. They did not move as she stepped on them to climb over the wall, and then carefully hold onto her to help her descend to the other side of the wall.
"Holy fuck! They are that smart?! And that crazy coordinating!"
"Why are you sounding as if you worship it!"
