Chapter 7: The Importance of Character

In life, people strive for many things-wealth, success, recognition, and influence. However, the one thing that remains constant and truly defines a person is character. Character is not about how much money we earn, how famous we become, or how intelligent we are. Instead, it is about who we are at our core-our honesty, our kindness, our integrity, and our ability to do what is right even when no one is watching.

Regardless of one's belief, the reality remains the same: your character determines your destiny. Everything else-money, status, power-can be lost in an instant, but the person you become is something you carry with you wherever you go, even beyond this life. If we understand the importance of character, we will start to value the choices we make every day, knowing that each decision shapes us into the kind of person we are becoming.

1. Character Is the Only Treasure That Lasts

Many people spend their lives chasing after material wealth, thinking that money and possessions will bring happiness and security. While financial stability is important, it does not define a person's worth. History has shown that the rich can lose everything in an instant, and the powerful can fall from their positions overnight.

However, character is something that cannot be taken away. A person with integrity, honesty, and kindness will always be respected, even in times of loss. In contrast, someone who lies, cheats, or mistreats others may gain temporary success but will eventually lose trust and respect. When all else fades, the only thing we truly take with us is the character we have built.

2. True Character Is Revealed in Actions, Not Appearances

Many people mistake intelligence, talent, or reputation for character. However, being smart or successful does not mean a person has good character. There are many talented individuals who lack integrity, and many highly respected people who live double lives.

True character is not what others think of us-it is who we really are when no one is watching.

It is shown in:

How we treat others, especially those who can do nothing for us.

How we handle challenges and failures-whether we remain honest and strong or compromise our values.

How we live our values daily, even when it is difficult.

While reputation can be manipulated, character is revealed through consistent actions. No matter how much someone tries to hide their true self, their choices will eventually expose their real character.

3. The Two Essential Elements of Strong Character

A strong character is built on two main pillars:

Willpower (Determination to do what is right)

Self-Control (Ability to resist temptation and negative emotions)

Many people think that having strong emotions or aggressive behavior makes them powerful. However, true strength is not about being loud, forceful, or aggressive-it is about having control over oneself.

A weak person is controlled by their emotions-they react impulsively, hold grudges, and make bad decisions out of anger or pride.

A strong person has self-control-they remain calm under pressure, forgive even when it is difficult, and think before they act.

The greatest example of strength is choosing to forgive rather than seeking revenge, choosing to remain honest rather than taking shortcuts, and choosing kindness over selfishness.

4. Character Development Is a Lifelong Process

Just like a seed grows into a tree, character takes time to develop. Every experience, every challenge, and every decision helps shape who we become.

Just as a plant must grow or die, so must our character.

Each day, we either move toward becoming a better person or allow bad habits to take root in our lives.

Unfortunately, many people focus more on external appearance-fashion, beauty, popularity-rather than on developing good character. But improving our character is far more valuable than following trends. A person with a strong character is admired not for their appearance, but for their actions, values, and integrity.

5. The Choices We Make Shape Our Future

Life is a series of choices, and each choice we make builds our character. Every action we take is like planting a seed-what we sow, we will eventually reap.

If we plant selfishness, dishonesty, and pride, we will harvest pain and destruction.

If we plant kindness, humility, and integrity, we will harvest respect, peace, and true success.

This principle is echoed in Galatians 6:8:

"He that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting."

If we choose to be selfish, we may enjoy short-term benefits, but in the end, we will face regret. However, if we choose to be honest, kind, and patient, we will build a life of deep fulfillment and joy.

6. The Power of Character to Influence Others

One of the greatest impacts we can make in this world is through our character. People may not remember what we say, but they will always remember how we treat them.

Parents, teachers, and mentors play a crucial role in shaping the character of the next generation. A child raised with integrity and respect for others can grow up to be a leader who transforms society for the better. Even one person with strong character can create a ripple effect that influences many lives.

This is why it is said that the greatest evidence of true faith is not words, but actions. It is not about how much we preach, but how we live.

At the end of life, the question is not how much money we made, how famous we became, or how many possessions we owned.

The real question is:

Did we live with honesty and integrity?

Did we treat others with kindness and respect?

Did we make choices that reflect good character?

Character is the one thing that remains when everything else fades. It is something that affects both this life and eternity. Whether you believe in God or not, the truth remains: good character leads to a life of purpose, joy, and respect, while bad character leads to regret and destruction.

Each day is an opportunity to become a better person. The choices we make today will determine the kind of person we will be tomorrow. Will we choose to build a character that stands strong, or will we allow ourselves to be shaped by the temporary distractions of the world? The decision is in our hands.
