Ophelia walked over to the wardrobe and started carefully picking out her outfit. Even with a baby bump which slightly – well, no, completely was more like it – ruined her figure, she didn’t want to lose to Cora.

Ophelia’s beauty was such that it would get you wondering whether she was a promiscuous type. As such, pure- and innocent-looking Cora was at an advantage, if they were to vie for people’s sympathy. Still, though, Ophelia didn’t want to lose.

In fact, the result of a cat fight depended on whose side that the dog – i.e., the man – eventually decided to take.

Ophelia arrived at the café five minutes early, so she ordered a cup of Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee, which she sipped as she waited. But when the agreed-upon meeting time arrived, Cora was still nowhere to be found. When Ophelia finished her coffee, she fished out her phone to find that half an hour had passed.

Ophelia dialed a number. When it connected, she said, “Are you here? Time is nothing of value to you, but priceless to me. You have ten more minutes to get here, because otherwise I’m leaving.”

Cora’s voice that came from the other end of the line, however, was very weak. “Ophelia, I’m feeling severe pains in and around my belly. Do you think I’m losing the baby? Can you come over?”

Immediately panicked, Ophelia asked, “Where are you right now? Let me know and I’m coming right over.”

Cora told her the address over the phone, and Ophelia, though surprised at the fact that Cora’s residence was quite close to Zachariah’s apartment building, had no time for jealousy in the face of life and death.

Ophelia hastily paid for her coffee and hurried out of the café. When she got into the car, she felt the need to call Zachariah, who didn’t answer until the second call.

“Hi, Cora just called and told me she had belly aches, and I’m not sure what it is but I’m going to her place to check on her. You should also come if you aren’t busy, cuz it’s...it’s your kid after all, and I assume you’ll be sad too should anything happen.”

“I’ll be there in a sec,” said Zachariah simply, before he hung up.

Hearing the beeping noises of the phone, painful expressions flashed past Ophelia’s eyes for a brief second, but soon, she was able to readjust her emotions and pull the car away.

It was off-peak hours, so Ophelia drove to Cora’s apartment building as fast as possible and took the elevator to Cora’s floor. Ophelia pounded hard on the door, but no one answered, so she had to go back down and negotiate with the concierges, two of whom grabbed a string of keys and agreed to follow her upstairs.

Keying the door open, Ophelia found Cora lying next to the staircase, a pool of blood stagnant near her legs.

Ophelia knew instinctively that this was a bad sign, so she asked the concierges to call for an ambulance, while she herself ran to Cora’s side and crouched down. “Cora, Cora!”

Cora woke up slowly, and upon seeing Ophelia, she shakily took the latter woman’s hand and pleaded, “Ophelia, please help me save my baby. I don’t want anything to happen to her.”

Holding Cora’s hand back, Ophelia said in a comforting tone, “Don’t worry, we’re taking you to the hospital right now. Both you and the baby are going to be just fine.”

“Save the baby. Save her, please!” Cora continue to beg, “I’m going to marry Zach.”

Ophelia, feeling a hundred different emotions twisting her insides, was still gentle as she said, “Don’t panic, you two are going to be okay. The ambulance is arriving soon.”

She then turned her gaze to the concierges. “Gentlemen, have you called for an ambulance?”

“Yes,” answered them, who took a look at Cora and said, “this young lady must have sustained a pretty bad injury. Is there anything we can use to stop the bleeding with?”

After some consideration, Ophelia said, “Gentlemen, who among you has greater strength? If you could help me carry her, we can send her to the hospital right now. We shan’t wait for the ambulance any longer; with each minute passed, more danger mounts for a pregnant woman.”

“Sounds good,” said the sturdier-looking concierge of the two, who went forward and lifted up Cora instantly.

Ophelia walked before him as she pleaded, “Please be very gentle. Let’s not bruise her.”

With a pregnant woman covered in blood in his arms, the concierge was terrified, too. After quite some efforts, they finally got down to the ground floor, where Ophelia opened the doors of her car, and the concierge guys put Cora in the backseat cautiously.

Ophelia drove to the best hospital in town as fast as she could while keeping it steady. She had called Mr. Kenelm on the ride over, so as soon as they arrived, they were welcomed by a team of doctors and nurses carrying stretchers.

The medical professionals transferred Cora on to the stretcher, and carried her into the hospital. Exhaling in relief, Ophelia turned to the concierges.

“Thank you both so much, gentlemen. I have no idea what would have happened today had it not been for your help. Let me buy you guys dinner some other day as a token of gratitude.”

The Vixen's Man 15 The concierges, both upright, middle-aged men, got flustered in front of a stunner like Ophelia. “It’s not that big of a deal, miss, since this is also what our jobs prescribe. Now that your friend is safely delivered to the hospital, we shall go back to work then.”

“Okay. I have to stay with her at the hospital, so I can’t drive you back. I’ll treat you to dinner when she recovers.”

The two men nodded in agreement before leaving.

Mr. Kenelm walked towards her. “Ophelia, you’re not looking great yourself. Let me do a check-up on you, may I? Helena has been looking forward to meeting this future grandson of hers forever, and I don’t want anything to happen to this precious baby.”
