âHowâs that?â
âI donât know how to phrase it, but I didnât expect you to react this way.â
âYou think Iâm being too cold?â
Ophelia nodded in honesty.
Zachariah sighed. âI donât understand women. Youâd get mad at me for worrying about other women if I do worry, and you accuse me of being cold when I donât.â
But that didnât quell the strange feeling Ophelia had. âI just...â
Zachariah placed a finger on her lips. âNow, hush before you say something youâll regret.â
Nesting in his embrace, Ophelia decided to give up pursuing the question of how exactly Zachariah felt about Cora. The two of them sat quietly on the bench for three hours as Cora received her surgery.
Ophelia glanced at the âOperation in Progressâ sign outside the room. With a frown, she said, âI think you should call the Fletchers, in case something should happen to her.â
Considering it for a while, Zachariah nodded in agreement. âIâll have the chauffeur drive you home, then. Itâs long past lunchtime, and you shouldnât starve for the babyâs sake.â
Ophelia nodded back. She had originally planned to stay with Zachariah, but the history between him and Cora would put her in an awkward place if she did. She was Jackie, and Cora was Marilyn. Now, Marilyn was inside facing a possible miscarriage during the surgery, so if she stayed, the Fletchers were likely to freak out when they saw her.
In a love triangle, one of the âanglesâ was destined to get hurt.
Ophelia gave Zachariah a look with complex meanings. He was such an outstanding guy that he got two equally exceptional women getting jealous, fighting and hating each other â all for him.
Traditional proverbs usually identify beautiful women as the roots of all troubles. Well, sometimes a beautiful man would be the roots of even bigger troubles.
Before she left, Ophelia said, âWatch out for yourself, Mr. Chambers, and feel free to call me should anything happen.â
Amused, Zachariah replied, âDonât worry. The Fletchers arenât going to eat me alive.â
Ophelia shot him a sideways look. âWith Miss Fletcher in such a miserable state, the Fletchers are probably not going to let you off the hook easily. I mean, their daughter is pregnant with your child after all.â
Zachariah reached for her cheeks and gently stroked them. âYouâre worrying so much, youâre turning into an ever-so-attentive grannie.â
Ophelia shot him a second sideways look.
âAlright, alright. I know youâre concerned about me. Go now, and Iâll call you if something happens with Cora,â said Zachariah comfortingly.
Then, Ophelia finally decided to leave. When she got into her car, she decided to call Mrs. Chambers out of residual concern.
Mrs. Chambersâ loving voice filled her ears as soon as she picked up. âHello, my dear.â
âHey mom. Have you had lunch yet?â
âYes, at around 11. You?â
âNot yet. Iâm on my way to get lunch though.â
âItâs pretty late. Why havenât you had lunch yet?â said Mrs. Chambers, audibly anxious. âWhere are you right now? Iâm going to have some food sent over to you. Whatâs Mrs. Miriam doing and why hasnât she made lunch for you?â
âRelax, mom, I just got out of a hospital so...â
âWhat? A hospital? Is there something wrong with the baby?â Mrs. Chambers only grew more anxious. âWhich hospital is it? Iâm coming over.â
Feeling warmth spreading in her chest, Ophelia said, âNo, mom, Iâm fine. Itâs Miss Fletcher who had an accident.â
On the other end of the line, Mrs. Chambers sounded displeased. âAre you with Cora Fletcher? Did she decide to pester you first? I swear, this woman really has no shame.â
Interrupting her, Ophelia said, âMom, please let me finish. Miss Fletcher had an accident, and the baby inside her might not survive.â
Mrs. Chambers froze for a second over the phone. âWhateverâs the matter?â
Ophelia proceeded to give a brief description of what she had seen happen.

After a short pause, Mrs. Chambers said, âDear, you should head on home. But I will go to the hospital myself. I donât know who fathered the child in her belly, but since she insists itâs Zachâs, then as Zachâs mother, surely I cannot stand idly by. Iâll go check it out, but you better stay out of it, being pregnant and everything. If you ask me, she might as well have this miscarriage, because that child would be born a bastard â how sad is that.â
As Ophelia listened, she found the words of Mrs. Chambersâ both surprising and chilling.
âDonât blame me for being too hard on her, dear. I just donât want any other woman to go about posing a threat to you. I like you a lot, and I shall have nobody else as my daughter-in-law.â
Thus, Ophelia felt guilty for what had passed through on mind.
âSorry, mom.â
Mrs. Chambers laughed over the phone. âSilly girl. Zachariah is the one who should be saying sorry to you, but there you are, apologizing to me. I know how much misery youâve been put through in our family. Zach is a good manager at work, but not a competent husband. Please put up with him and instruct on him. Iâm sure he will realize how truly amazing you are one of these days.â
âZach is a nice person and heâs nice to me,â answered Ophelia.
âThatâs good to hear from you. Alright, go home then, and Iâll have some nutritious food sent to you soon.â
âOkay.â
After hanging up, Ophelia cast a lingering look at the hospital and drove away.
Shortly after she left, the Fletchers hurried to the hospital.
Mrs. Fletcher practically jumped at Zachariah. âWhat has happened, Zachariah? Why should something horrible like this happen to our Cora?â she asked as she wept.
