Chapter 136: Staying the Night?
Katie felt a chill run down her spine.
What did Selina mean? Today was her wedding anniversary, and that bitchâ
"Alright, since Selina doesnât mind, letâs all take our seats," Grandpa Clark spoke before Katie could make sense of the situation, and the guests began to sit down.
Selina narrowed her eyes. She had never agreed to forgive KatieâGrandpa Clark was truly "magnanimous."
But whatever. This was just an appetizer.
With a shrug, she walked towards the main table. "Mrs. Bryant, I assume thereâs a seat for me at the main table?"
Katie nearly ground her silver teeth to dust. "Of course there is."
James quickly interjected, "Mr. Reid, please take the seat of honor."
Logan, with his prestigious status, had been given Grandpa Clarkâs seat. Seeing this, Natalia immediately tried to sit on his left, butâ
Selina sat down first!
"Sister, why are you glaring at me? Am I not allowed to sit here?"
Nataliaâs face twisted with rage. "Selina! That... Thatâs Dadâs seat!"
Even if it wasnât hers, why should it go to Selina?!
"Oh, is that so?" Selina blinked innocently. "Logan, I just wanted to sit next to you for dinner. I didnât realize the family suddenly had such rules. Letâs switch seats then."
Logan made a move to stand up.
James, terrified of offending this formidable man, quickly swallowed his frustration and forced a smile. "No need, no need. Natalia is just a bit rigid. Itâs just a seatâswitching places isnât a big deal."
Selina feigned indifference. "As long as Dad has no objections, I wouldnât want to be accused halfway through dinner of bullying Natalia again."
Jamesâ face turned red, his teeth clenched in silent fury.
The table was filled with lavish dishes, and throughout the meal, Logan fed Selina with the utmost care. "Open up."
Selinaâs cheeks puffed up as she chewed. "Thatâs enough, thatâs enough."
Watching from the side, Natalia seethed with jealousy. Ryan had never once served her food, let alone peeled crab meat for her!
And yet, Logan, who was far more distinguished than Ryan, was willing to do such things for Selina. How could Natalia possibly accept this?!
A venomous glint flickered in her eyes. Anything that belonged to Selinaâshe would take it!
With a honeyed tone, Natalia spoke up, "Sister, you shouldnât just focus on yourself. Mr. Reid has been tending to you all evening, but you havenât spared a thought for him."
Logan and Selina ignored her completely.
Nataliaâs face flushed with embarrassment. Unwilling to back down, she pressed on, "Mr. Reid, look at how my sister is so absorbed in eating that sheâs forgotten about you. Let me get you something."
A piece of fish suddenly appeared in Loganâs plate.
The manâs hand paused, his expression darkening. He turned to a nearby maid. "Bring me a new plate."
His disgust was painfully obvious.
Nataliaâs face drained of color. "Mr. Reid, I was justâ"
"Behave yourself, sister."
Selina swallowed a bite of crab and elegantly wiped her hands, speaking lazily, "Youâve already stolen one Ryan. Are you planning to take all my men?"
"I-I didnât mean it like that..."
Selina turned directly to Katie. "Mrs. Bryant, keep your daughter in check. Sheâs just like youâalways clinging to married men."
With that, she resumed her meal as if nothing had happened, completely disregarding the ashen faces of the Bryant family.
The banquet hall fell into utter silence.
The atmosphere was unbearably awkward, and Natalia bit her lip furiously. The more she thought about it, the angrier she became.
At that moment, the servants brought out the final courseâa steaming hot soup.
Nataliaâs eyes flickered with an idea. Quickly, she ladled a bowl and walked towards James. "Dad, this soup is really good. You should try some."
As she passed by Selina, she deliberately shifted her stanceâ
"Oh no!"
With a loud splash, the scalding soup came crashing down.
Logan reacted swiftly, pulling Selina into his armsâwhile Nataliaâs hand was burned, bubbling up with painful blisters.
Natalia never expected Logan to move so fast. Not only was Selina completely unscathed, but she herself ended up getting burned!
"Natalia! What happened?!" Katie screamed, rushing over in a panic.
Natalia let out a pitiful sob. "It hurts so much, Mom! Is my hand ruined? Selina, why did you do this to me..."
Katie, both distressed and heartbroken, collapsed onto the floor, wailing.
"Selina! If you have a problem, take it out on me! Natalia is your sister! What if that scalding soup had splashed onto her face? She could have been disfigured! How could you be so cruel?!"
Selina sneered at the mother-daughter duoâs performance. "You couldnât even hold the bowl properly, and now youâre blaming me?"
Nataliaâs expression shifted, panic flashing in her eyes. She quickly stammered, "B-But you bumped into me! Sister, what are you trying to say? Are you accusing me of lying?"
James had initially held back because of Logan, but seeing his beloved daughter injured, he could no longer restrain himself. His face darkened as he shouted at Selina:
"Selina, youâve really let me down! Natalia is burned, and youâre still making excuses! Apologize to her right now!"
Katie and Natalia exchanged triumphant glances.
Selina scoffed. "Mr. Clark, if you donât need your eyes, you might as well donate them to someone who does."
Jamesâ face flushed redâshe was mocking him for being blind!
Furious, he raised his hand and swung it down hard, snapping, "You still dare to talk back?! Apologize! Or Iâll beat you to deaâah!"
But the expected slap never landed.
Logan had swiftly caught Jamesâ wrist.
His expression remained calm, his movements graceful, yet James found himself unable to move.
Jamesâ voice trembled from the pain. "M-Mr. Reid, please let go. I was just disciplining my disobedient daughterâsheâs completely out of line..."
"Does the Clark family not have security cameras?" Logan asked indifferently.
James was momentarily stunned. "Cameras? What do you mean, Selinaâ"
"If you want to accuse Selina, you should have evidence. You canât just take the word of an illegitimate daughter as the truth. Are you really going to believe a one-sided story, Mr. Clark?"
Faced with Loganâs sharp gaze, James completely lost his momentum. He stammered, "B-But Natalia is hurt, so..."
Logan lifted his hand slightly, cutting him off.
The next moment, Jack pushed open the door. "Sir, here is the banquet hall surveillance footage."
Nataliaâs face turned deathly pale!
How did Logan get the footage?! Those idiot servantsâhow could they hand it over to an outsider?!
What now? She... she couldnât let the truth come out!
Katie snapped back to her senses and quickly laughed awkwardly. "Oh dear, itâs nothing serious! Natalia must have been in a rush and accidentally bumped into Selina. In the heat of the moment, she thought Selina had pushed her!"
Natalia nearly exploded with rage, but she had no choice. Grinding her teeth, she admitted, "Yes, I must have seen wrong. My sister didnât bump into me."
Loganâs tone was leisurely. "So, youâre confirming that Selina is innocent?"
Katie forced another laugh. "Of course, of course."
Logan nodded. "Then shouldnât you apologize to Selina?"
The Clark familyâs expressions froze.
"You falsely accused Selina, even demanded she apologize, yet now that Mrs. Bryant and Miss Natalia have admitted they were wrong, youâre not going to apologize?"
Though Loganâs face remained neutral, his eyes carried a dangerous chill.
"Or is it that, in the Clark family, Selina is always in the wrong, no matter what?"
Katieâs throat tightened, her mind in chaos.
James panicked. "M-Mr. Reid, of course not! This was all just a misunderstanding... Selina, I actually care about you a lot. I was just worried youâd become too spoiled, that youâd pick up bad habits, so I had to be strict. You understand, donât you?"
Selina casually ran her fingers through her hair. "Dad, youâre absolutely right. I understand. But since you care about me so much, now that the truth has come to light, is it too much for me to ask for an apology?"
With things at this point, James had no way out. "Natalia, you falsely accused your sisterâapologize now!"
Natalia bit her lip so hard it nearly bled. Finally, she squeezed out, "Sister, Iâm sorry..."
Selina, in a great mood, smiled. "Mm, itâs okay."
Natalia was on the verge of losing her mind. Her smile was about to crack. "Dad, Iâll go change my clothes."
Katie chuckled awkwardly. "Mr. Reid, James, Iâll go check on Natalia."
Once the mother and daughter left the table, James forced a smile. "Mr. Reid, Iâve prepared a room for you and Selina. Why donât you stay the night?"
Loganâs eyes flickered slightly before he suddenly chuckled. "Mr. Clark is being so hospitable. It would be rude of me to refuse."
Selina blinked in confusion.
