Chapter 15: Jealousy Jack quietly exited the study, leaving Logan alone.
Logan opened a drawer, taking out an aged, yellowed note. His fingers gently brushed the paperâs surface, his eyes shadowed and inscrutable, as if peering through it to a distant past.
The next morning, Selina woke early to prepare for her registration at City A University. But as she stepped outside, she was faced with an unexpected dilemma.
The Sapphire Valley Villa was enormous, and walking from her residence to the estateâs main gate would take at least twenty minutes. Adding the wait time for a taxi, she risked being late.
Standing at the doorway, she hesitated, debating whether to ask Loganâs driver for a ride. Feeling too awkward to trouble him, she decided to jog out of the estate and catch a taxi outside.
Just as she began walking, the sound of steady footsteps behind her made her turn. Logan stood there, meeting her gaze with his usual calm expression.
"Miss Clark, are you heading to City A University for registration?" His voice was low and steady, carrying his characteristic composure.
Selina froze, her heart skipping a beat. How did he know? Was he about to bombard her with more cryptic questions like the day before?
Before she could respond, Logan didnât probe further. Instead, he casually adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses and said nonchalantly, "It happens that I need to visit City A University for some business. Iâll give you a ride."
Selina blinked, realizing there was no reason to refuse a free ride. Without hesitation, she slipped into the passenger seat.
In the car, Logan was dressed down in a crisp white shirt instead of his usual suit. With the top two buttons undone, his appearance was less formal and more relaxed, carrying an air of effortless charm.
Selina couldnât help but ask, "What are you going to City A University for?"
Logan, focused on the road, answered without looking at her. "Thereâs an art and calligraphy exhibit. I was invited to attend."
She nodded in understanding, remembering that City A University held an annual art and calligraphy competition. The Carter Family was a major sponsor, and traditionally, Ryanâs fiancée had been the guest presenter. Selina had once prepared for that role herself.
However, after Ryanâs fiancée switched to Natalia, the honor had naturally passed to her. Logan, as the Carter Familyâs heir, being invited made sense. Yet what puzzled her was why both Logan and Ryan were attending this year. Typically, the Carter Family sent only one representative.
As she mulled over the oddity, they arrived at the gates of City A University.
Logan glanced at her briefly and said in a neutral tone, "Iâll pick you up after your registration and take you back."
Selina, impressed by her "chauffeurâs" thoughtfulness, smiled and prepared to step out of the car. Just then, a sharp, mocking female voice rang out from nearby.
"Hah, Selina, the country bumpkin. I bet sheâs never even touched such an expensive car before!"
Loganâs eyes instantly darkened, a cold glint flashing through his gaze.
Selina followed the voice and let out a cold laugh. Of course. It was Ryan, driving a flashy luxury car and dropping Natalia off at the university. The pair of scumbags were parading their affection while taking the chance to humiliate her. Disgusting.
Narrowing her eyes, Selina turned to Logan and asked, "Mr. Reid, how much does this car cost?"
Logan, noticing the sly challenge in her eyes, smirked faintly. His tone was casual. "Twenty million dollars."
Selinaâs smile brightened at his response. "Perfect."
Meanwhile, Ryan was stepping out of his luxury car, helping Natalia out with a flourish. The couple, arm in arm, looked like the perfect golden pair, drawing plenty of attention from onlookers.
Whispers spread through the crowd:
"Mr. Carter isnât just richâheâs so considerate. Nataliaâs so lucky."
"Look at the car heâs driving! I heard itâs worth five million dollars. Nataliaâs not just cherished at home; now she has Mr. Carter spoiling her too. Sheâs living the dream!"
Just as the crowd was immersed in admiration, someone murmured, "But Mr. Carter never drove Selina in before, did he?"
The comment made Nataliaâs heart tighten, but she quickly scanned the crowd, signaling discreetly with her eyes. Moments later, a sharp, sarcastic voice rang out: "What are you talking about? A country bumpkin like Selina isnât worthy of Mr. Carterâs attention. If he didnât drive her, itâs because he didnât want to lower his status."
"Exactly. Sheâs probably never even been inside a luxury car."
"Oh, by the way, I heard Selina is also registering today. Think sheâll faint from jealousy when she sees this?"
Hearing the comments, Natalia couldnât help the slight curve of her lips. She clung to Ryanâs arm a little tighter. The more envious the crowd was, the sweeter her victory felt. So what if she was a homewrecker? Results were what truly mattered.
Feigning concern, Natalia leaned closer to Ryan and said softly, "Ryan, Iâm a little worried about Selina. Sheâs living alone and doesnât have a driver to bring her here. Itâs almost nine, and she still hasnât arrived. What if something happened to her?"
Ryan frowned, clearly impatient. "Donât worry about her. Whether she skips registration or drops out entirely has nothing to do with you."
"Exactly," Zoey chimed in with a sneer. Her tone dripped with malice. "Natalia, why waste your concern on that bumpkin? What, do you expect my brother to drive her here in a luxury car? With her status, she doesnât even deserve to touch our car doors."
Still fuming from yesterdayâs humiliation at Celestial Feast, Zoey seized the opportunity to mock Selina relentlessly. "Someone like her should know her place! Luxury cars? Sheâs better off squeezing onto a crowded bus!"
Natalia sighed theatrically, shaking her head as though reluctantly agreeing. "Alright, Zoey. Donât say that. My sister, sheâs just..."
Her sentence was abruptly cut off by a series of gasps from the crowd.
"Look at that car!"
All heads turned at once, and the sight before them left everyone stunned.
A sleek, elegant luxury car glided smoothly onto the scene, its understated design catching the sunlight and reflecting subtle glimmers, like stars shimmering in daylight. One glance, and someone in the crowd recognized it.
"Thatâs the new limited-edition âSâ model from last year! It may look subtle, but at night, its lights create a dazzling, starry effect. There are only three in the world, and it costs 20 million dollars!"
"Twenty million?! Thatâs several times more expensive than Nataliaâs car! Who could possibly be inside? Another student?"
The growing admiration and buzz from the crowd made Nataliaâs face freeze. Her nails dug into her palms as she glared at the car, jealousy burning in her chest. A 20-million-dollar car! Compared to this, her 5-million-dollar car was nothing.
Who was stealing her spotlight?
Grinding her teeth, she forced herself to maintain composure and said in a concerned tone, "I wonder whoâs in that car... But this is a university, a place for learningânot a venue for flaunting wealth."
At that moment, the car door opened slowly, and a crisp, confident voice rang out, cutting through Nataliaâs words like a knife.
"You driving a luxury car to campus is reasonable, but when someone else does it, itâs âflaunting wealthâ? Sister, your logic is truly remarkable."
The crowd fell silent, stunned.
After a few seconds, murmurs broke out as people began to realize the identity of the person stepping out of the car.
"Wait... is that Selina?!"
"No way! Wasnât Selina too poor to even ride in a luxury car?"
"But the car sheâs in makes Nataliaâs look cheap! And sheâs never bragged about it before. Sheâs really low-key."
"Meanwhile, Nataliaâs always flaunting her stuff. This must be so embarrassing for her now."
Nataliaâs face turned ashen. Her earlier smugness crumbled into dust as her confidence shattered. She swayed unsteadily, barely keeping herself from rushing forward to confront Selinaâhow could she be riding in a 20-million-dollar car?
Ryan didnât look much better. His brows furrowed as he spoke in a disapproving tone. "Selina, Natalia was just concerned about you. Do you really have to be so harsh?"
Zoey, on the other hand, was utterly livid. Her voice rose in a shrill screech. "Yeah! Who do you think you are, riding in a car like that? Youâre nothing but trashâhow could you deserve something like this?"
Selina let out a cold laugh, clearly unimpressed. She had overheard Zoeyâs earlier tirade when she stepped out of the car and had already decided on her response.
She shot Zoey a disdainful look and said mockingly, "A car is meant to be ridden in. Why does it need to âmatchâ someone? Zoey, this is a university.
Weâre in the modern world."
She lightly patted the car door, her voice steady and cutting. "Who says riding in a luxury car makes someone noble, while taking the bus makes them lowly? Instead of dividing people into hierarchies, why donât you start by clearing out the trash in your head?"
