Chapter 232: Asking for Trouble In front of everyone, Selina walked straight over to Jacob without hesitation. "Mr. Carter."
Loganâs jaw clenched instantly.
Jacob gave a light chuckle and naturally took her purse from her hands. "Traffic?"
Selina brushed her hair back. "Yeah, thatâs why Iâm a bit late. Iâm not too late, am I?"
The two chatted like they were alone in the room, completely ignoring Loganâs presence.
Jack swallowed hard. Since when did Mrs. Reid and Jacob get this close?
He sneaked a glance at Loganâs faceânothing showed. But in his eyes, a storm was brewing. The veins on the back of his hand bulged as he gripped with quiet restraint.
Jacob gave a polite nod. "Logan, the partyâs started. Letâs head in."
Selina would occasionally look up to say something to Jacob, and every time, heâd respond with a gentle nod and a soft smileâlike they were the real couple, a perfect match.
Logan felt like someone had wrapped a fist around his chest and squeezed. There was a needle in his throat; even breathing stung.
The guests started to notice the tension, exchanging glances.
Whatâs up with Mr. Reid...?
Inside the banquet hall, more people took notice of the woman by Jacobâs side, their faces lighting up with surprise.
"Jacob, whoâs this young lady?"
With a smile, Jacob replied, "This is the Clark familyâs eldest daughterâAunt Victoriaâs daughter."
People immediately connected the dots.
"Oh! The Clark family heiress! Jacob, this is the first time youâve brought someone to a party. Whatâs going on between you two?"
Loganâs grip on his wine glass tightened until his knuckles turned white.
Jacob smiled, voice teasing but calm. "Weâre just friends."
"You have a female friend? Thatâs new."
"I heard Mrs. Victoria arranged a childhood engagement for Miss Clark years ago. Wasnât that with the Carter family? And youâre telling us theyâre just friends?"
"Come on, Jacob, donât lie to us."
Clearly, no one believed him. Egged on by Jacobâs vague responses, they continued teasing:
"Sheâs your fiancée, right? Weâre all friends here. No need to be so secretive!"
Selina instinctively turned her head toward Logan. His eyes were deep, stormy, intense enough to make her heart skip a beat.
Jacob, still smiling, said gently, "Donât tease herânot yet."
Not yet...
The implication in those words made Selina frown. She was just about to clarify, but a few guests beat her to it:
"Miss Clark, Jacobâs been single all these years. That alone proves heâs a solid guy."
"Exactly. Weâre just waiting for the wedding! When that day comes, weâll be calling youâ"
The word sister-in-law hadnât even fully landed whenâ
CRACK.
Everyoneâs heads turned.
Loganâs wine glass had shattered in his hand. No one could tell if it was blood or red wine dripping down his sculpted forearmâbut it was red. Bright red.
His whole body radiated cold fury. The room went dead silent.
People scrambled to smooth things over. "Haha... mustâve been a cheap glass. Iâll have someone bring Mr. Reid a new one."
Logan said nothing. His gaze locked on Selina, sharp enough to pierce through her.
Selinaâs cheeks flushed. Anger flared in her chest.
What the hell are you staring at?
Yes, she had a childhood engagement with the Carter family. Where was the lie? Why was he acting like sheâd wronged him?
A waiter quickly brought over a new glass. No one dared press their luck, and the group began to quietly disperse.
Then, Selina gave a mocking laugh and said sarcastically, "Oh, so it was just a cheap glass? For a second, I thought Mr. Reid had... feelings about Mr. Carter."
The room went dead silent.
Selina, oblivious, looked around in surprise. "Did I say something wrong? Just a wild guess. Mr. Reid is way too important to care, right?"
Everyone: "..."
Jack could barely breathe: "..."
Logan gave her one long look, then abruptly turned and walked toward the lounge.
Jack cleared his throat, stepping forward to explain, "Sirâs clothes are wet. Heâs just going to change and will be right back. MadamâMiss Clark, you â"
But Selina just scoffed and walked right into the center of the crowd before he could finish.
Everyone was stunned by her boldness.
Someone asked in a low voice, "Miss Clark... are you close with Mr. Reid?"
Selina replied casually, "Oh, not close."
Not close?! Then how the hell did you just pull that off?
"Miss Clark, maybe you donât realizeâMr. Reid isnât someone people like us can casually provoke."
"Yeah, you should avoid talking to him too much. If you offend him, no one here can protect you."
"But Mr. Reid has been acting strange today. He usually never shows up to these parties. Now heâs here, looking like he came to collect a debt. None of us even did anything to him."
Selina flipped her hair, completely unfazed. "Maybe he swallowed a stick of dynamite or something."
Everyone fell silent.
This is what she calls ânot closeâ with him?
They were pretty sure Miss Clark had just walked all over Logan Reid.
After eating a few bites, Selina accidentally spilled something on her outfit. She frowned. "Iâm going to the restroom."
She had just finished cleaning her clothes and was heading back when she passed one of the loungesâand suddenly, a door swung open, a hand grabbed her wrist, and she was pulled inside.
Selina gasped, "Let goâ"
"Mrs. Reid."
The next second, she was in a familiar embrace, his voice hoarse and low, like he was holding something back. "I heard... you and I ânot closeâ?"
Hot lips brushed against the side of her neck, making her shiver.
She snapped, "Thatâs right! Weâre practically divorced. Of course weâre not closeâLogan!"
His lips trailed up her neck, and the moment he heard the word divorce, he bit downâright on her earlobe.
Selina flinched and yelled, "What, I canât even say the word now? I will say it! Youâve got Angelica anyway. Us getting divorced is the perfect outcome âLogan, youâre such a jerk!"
Loganâs warm hand settled on her waist, pulling her tighter into him.
His voice was calm, but firm, full of restraint. "Mrs. Reid. If you say âdivorceâ one more time, Iâm going to kiss you. Donât bring this on yourself."
Selina was not someone who backed down.
Instant defiance sparked in her. "I will say it. Iâve even drafted the divorce agreement, andâmmph!"
His lips landed on her eye, making her voice falter from the sudden heat.
Selina was furious. "Youâre impossible, Logan. Everyoneâs saying youâre going to marry Angelicaâof course I want to step aside firstâ"
Another kiss, this time on her cheek.
His breathing grew heavier. "I told you. Donât bring this on yourself."
Selina felt more and more wronged. What kind of logic was this?
He could be all over Angelica, but the moment she came to Jacobâs party, suddenly she was the one crossing a line?
"You think I donât have options? Plenty of men are after me. I still have choices. Personally, I think Mr. Carterâs quiteâmmph!"
Her lips were suddenly captured in a fierce kiss, and Logan held her tightly against him. Her vision blurred as everything darkenedâsight gone, her other senses sharpened.
Logan kissed her like he was consuming her wholeâtongue claiming every inch of her mouth, breath stealing all the air from her lungs.
Selinaâs body went weakâ
Knock knock knock.
Just then, a knock came at the door, followed by Jacobâs voice.
"Miss Clark, are you in there? Youâve been gone a while. Everyoneâs getting a little worried."
Selinaâs eyes flew open.
Jacobâs outside!
Her whole body trembled. She managed to regain some clarity, whispering in panic, "Noâstopâthe soundproofing... itâs awful..."
These lounges were just temporary setups. The walls might as well have been paper.
There was only a thin door between them and Jacob. If he heard or came inâthey were done.
But Logan just chuckled, low and raspy, full of something dark and satisfied.
"Let him hear."
