As soon as the bell rang, Yvette was swarmed by her classmates.
âYvie, weâre going to visit Madison at the hospital. Want to join us?â
Yvette shook her head, remembering her promise to wait for Adam after school. âYou guys go ahead. Iâll visit another day.â
âOkay!â Her classmates nodded and didnât press her further. âYvie, weâre heading out now!â
âMm.â
Yvette lazily grabbed her backpack and started toward the school gate. As her classmates left, Alice quickly fell in step behind her, a selfâsatisfied smirk on her face.
âYvette, you might not know yet, but the Quinn family has invested in my family! Hahaha, with their support, how can the Murray family possibly bring us down now?â
âThe Quinn family invested in the Robertson family?â Yvette mused to herself. Her eyes narrowed slightly. Noticing Yvetteâs lack of reaction, Aliceâs smugness only grew. She couldnât help but flaunt her victory. âI heard youâre engaged to Mr. Wilson, but when Victoria spoke to him, he agreed to invest in my family. âIt seems youâre not as important to him as you thought. Clearly, Victoria means more to him than you do. Itâs only a matter of time before he calls off the engagement, and youâll end up as the joke of Jubilife Cityâ
The thought made Alice practically giddy with delight.
Yvette had once humiliated her and nearly forced her into marrying that loathsome Benedict. Now, seeing Yvette face a similar fate was the sweetest revenge.
âAre you done talking?â Yvette stopped dead in her tracks and shot Alice a frosty glare. Despite her calm demeanor, an unmistakable air of intimidation surrounded her.
Aliceâs body trembled involuntarily, but she quickly masked her fear with an arrogant smirk, pressing on with her taunts.
âWhatâs the matter, Yvette? Did I hit a sore spot? Canât handle the truth? Look at yourself -youâre just a country bumpkin, far from being worthy of Mr. Wilson. Only someone as polished and sophisticated as Victoria is fit for him!â
Yvetteâs impassive expression only served to enrage Alice further. It felt like her words were bouncing off a wallâYvette wasnât reacting as Alice had hoped, making her even more furious.
Aliceâs face flushed with anger, and she lashed out, âI heard you sent your adoptive parents to prison. Youâre such a heartless ingrate!
âThat old woman must regret ever taking you in. You put her son and granddaughter behind bars. If she knew, sheâd be cursing the day she ever took in such a troublemaker!â
Before Alice could finish her sentence, she let out a shriek of terror at the sight of Yvetteâs rage.
Kayla was Aliceâs weak spot, any insult about her was unbearable.
Yvetteâs delicate face remained composed, but her air was suffused with a chilling, menacing intensity.
âYouâre looking for trouble?â Yvetteâs voice was iceâcold. âIâll be happy to obligeâ
She had intended to let Madison handle her revenge once she recovered, but with Alice actively seeking confrontation, Yvette decided to take matters into her own hands, âWhat⦠What are you doing?â Aliceâs voice trembled, her fear palpable as she tried to flee.
âTrying to run, are you?â Yvetteâs lips curled into a cold, mocking smile. Her eyes flashed with a dangerous glint as she released a flurry of silver needles from her slender fingers.
In a heartbeat, Aliceâs body went rigid, paralyzed and unresponsive, as if she had lost all control.
âWhat⦠Whatâs happening?â Aliceâs fear was evident as she struggled. âYvette, what did you do to me? Why canât I moveâ¦â
âYouâre too noisy,â Yvette said, her face impassive. The coldness around her seemed to intensify, sending a shiver down Aliceâs spine.
