Chapter 1: Chapter 1- Alone

When They Came [Editing On Hiatus]Words: 10671

Another boring day of my life. Going to school, getting treated like a nobody, understanding nothing what the teachers teach, gossiping with my only friend, come home, eat, sleep, do homework, read stories, cook and eat dinner and sleep again. Then the next day, same cycle repeated.

This is what my life is. Boring. And I am just a high school girl who is considered weird and lives alone in her house because her parents are always busy with their business trips.

Nice.

Wait- did I forget to introduce myself? My bad. Well, I am Jennifer Smith, 17 years, blue eyes, black hair, a cute chubby body, goes to Green Ville High School and... And? And nothing.

Yeah.. There's nothing really interesting about me and my lonely life. And I always believed that it'll continue to stay that way for as long as I were to live.

But little did I know, four boys would barge into my life to change everything.

*****

I was walking to school instead of taking use of any form of transportation to reach my destination as its only 15 minutes away from my house. And also a part of me liked to believe that I would loose some weight if I walk everyday.

Humming the tune of my favourite song, I was staring up at the clouds, admiring the patterns they'd created when I failed to notice a presence and bumped into someone.

Dylan.

Oh my god I had bumped into Dylan! He was the hottest guy in the school with a really short temper. He was a heartless player and almost all the girls in my school had a crush on him- including me. Heh. I'm only a teenage girl after all.

His hazel brown eyes were so dreamy, although they held a ruth coldness in those irises most of the time, his brown hair were always messed up to give him a rough look, his jawline was just perfect, his lips were so pink and plump and his muscular body made him look like a model. He was just perfect, minus the personality but whatever.

"If you're done staring at me, move?"

"W-what? Oh yes! I-I am sorry I didn't see-"

"I get it, just get aside now."

Geez, no need to be so rude. I was just apologising and it wasn't even my fault in the first place.

Standing by my locker, I was taking out some books when Ashley, my best friend, came running upto me.

"Hey Jen! Sup girl?" She beamed, as energetic as always, unlike me who would rather just sleep in all day.

"Hey, Ash." I greeted back.

"Did you just bump into Dylan?" She asked with widened eyes, excitement bubbling out of her.

It wasn't that big of a deal. I mean, I get it that he's popular and stuff but he's not a freaking celebrity.

"Yeah, I did." I shrugged.

"Woah. What did he say?"

"What do you expect?"

"Um... Told you to get out of his sight?"

"Exactly"

"Oh never mind. He's out of your league anyway. But don't get me wrong, you'll find someone.... Someday.... Hopefully." I hate to admit it but there was a sense of mockery in her voice that I chose to ignore at the moment.

"Thanks for the motivation. It really helped." I replied back in sarcasm instead.

"I know, anyways, you know Alexander? The basketball team captain? Yeah him. He asked me out and I said yes!"

She squealed in delight. I was happy for her. Unlike me, Ashley was pretty, confident and popular. Her long, wavy red hair and vibrant green eyes are adored by everyone.

"Yeah whatever. Do we have any classes together today?"

"Seriously Jennifer? Not even a bit excited for your best friend?" She asked with an uninterested look.

"You go out with a new guy every week and they are all hot. I am not even surprised at this point."

"True that. Well, I don't blame you. You can't feel excited for something that you can't have. Anyways, bye, see you later."

Her words hurt but she's right. What do I know about dating and going out with guys. No one wants to be with me as if I am a walking virus. Guys only talk to me when they want me to set them up with Ashley just like this nerdy Noah is approaching me for.

"Hey, Jennifer! Nice outfit." He smiled, showing off his teeth.

"I know."

"Um.. So, we have a test in history today. I can help-"

As soon as his words found their way to my ears, my eyes widnened and I swear my heart started to beat faster in apprehension. "What?! Test?! Why?! I didn't study for anything!"

"That's what I am here for. I can show you the answers." He grinned proudly.

Right, he doesn't know that Ashley is going out with Alexander. Fine then, all these guys use me to get to her. It won't matter if I use one for my sake, right?

So I took a hold of his arm and dragged Noah to history class and slumped down in the last seat. The history teacher, Mr. Peterson walked in with his grumpy face.

Can't this man actually smile for once? I know history is a hated subject by majority of students but he chose to teach this subject, it won't hurt to crack a smile every once in a while.

"45 minutes for 25 questions. Your time starts now."

Awesome. I knew nothing in this test. Absolutely nothing. I was totally utterly clueless.

Well, that's what happens when you don't pay attention in class, idiot.

I looked up at Noah after skimming through the questions and said, "I can set you up with Ashley if you show me the answers." I whispered lowly, not wanting to arise any attention to myself.

Noah's eyes lit up as he smiled at me.

I felt almost guilty, almost.

"So, you knew?" He asked sheepishly.

"I might seem dumb but I'm not entirely empty here." I pointed at my head.

He gave me a guilty smile and let me cheat off all the answers from his paper. And just like that, our test was done.

Just as the bell rang, I stood up from my seat and was about to fly off but Noah grabbed my wrist, halting my movements.

"So, as you promised..?"

It was my turn to give him a guilty smile. "Listen, I am really sorry Noah. I just remembered that Ashley is going out with Alexander so maybe next time."

Before he could say anything, I ran out of the class to avoid any further conversation. I felt bad for using him like that but that's what he was about to do with me. Use me.

The rest of the day in school was just like everyday. Don't these teachers get tired from giving those same boring lectures to everyone because I get bored just from listening to them.

And math sucks!

After the day was finally over, I was walking back home, alone; since Ashley was going home with Alexander in his car.

While walking, in my melancholic state, I noticed how everyone around me had someone to hang out with while here I was, wandering like a lonely soul.

I stopped in front of a cafe- Cafe Cherry Bear. Despite the weird name, their coffee was the best! So I decided to go in and have some nice coffee and drown in my thoughts of self pity.

I gave my order and decided to take a seat by the window so that I could stare outside. I saw how a little kid was standing beside his mother who was busy chatting with another woman. The kid tried to say something to his mother, only to get ignored. In annoyance, he took out his anger on the ants beneath his feet as he stomped on them with a pouty face.

"Need some company?" I flinched at the sudden voice and turned my head away from the window to look at the intruder.

I shifted in my seat as once again, I was overcome by guilt when I saw that it was Noah.

"Listen Noah.. About earlier I really didn't mean to.. You know I am dumb.. I Knew nothing about that test and you offered me to help yourself so I thought I-"

"Relax, Jennifer. I am not angry. It's Okay." He assured.

"It is?"

"Yup.. We're good."

"We are?"

"Yeah, silly." He chuckled.

"Sure."

"What?"

"About your question earlier... I don't mind your company."

"Oh great." And he made himself comfortable in the seat opposite to mine. Our orders arrived and the initial awkwardness in our conversation slowly faded away and soon, the two of us were chatting as if we were best of friends.

The absurdity of how a guy was willingly hanging out with me when no one else ever as much as gave a second look at me made me doubt the realness of the situation.

What if he is just here with me so that he can get close to Ashley ? Or.. Maybe this is a prank? Or a challenge? What if he-

"Where are you lost, Jennifer?" Noah waved a hand in front of me, snapping me out of my train of thoughts.

"Uh.. Oh.. No where.. " I looked away from his face to glance around the cafe.

"You sure? Your facial expressions were changing every second and it was so funny." He started chuckling.

A warm feeling erupted in my heart when I heard the sound. His laugh made me crack a small smile at him.

"So I was thinking that maybe we both could hang out with Ashley sometime?" And just like that, the smile vanished off of my face.

I knew it. It wasn't because of me he was talking to me. It was because of Ashley.

"Uh.. Sure. Actually, I just remembered I have somewhere to be. See you later." I tried to keep the disappointment away from my voice.

I paid my bill and rushed out of there, leaving him alone. Keeping my head low for the rest of the way back home, I managed to hide my watery eyes from people. As soon as I reached my house, I threw my bag on the couch and plopped down beside it.

"Am I really that ugly?" I whispered to myself, not able to hold back the tears that slid down my face. "Why don't people actually talk to me for me?"

The loneliness was eating me up from the inside and I felt a desperate need to talk to someone. So I texted Ashley to see if she can come over.

"Sorry Jen m at Alexander's.

Can't come rn"

Of course she was with him. Even if I try to convince her to come to me, she won't. So I didn't bother and instead called the only other person who might have been willing to talk to me.

My mom. But she was another bad idea.

"Hey, mom."

"Jennifer.. If it isn't something important then we'll talk later." She said in a rushed tone.

"Uh.. I just wanted to know when you guys will be back?"

"I don't know. Listen, Jennifer, I am really busy right now. Bye."

She didn't even wait for my reply and just hung up. I couldn't help the thoughts of how there has to be something wrong with me if even my own parents don't want to be around me seeped into mind.

After I was done sulking, I took out the tub of coconut ice cream from the freezer, put on some movie and jumped on the couch.

Fine then.. No one wants to be around me then I don't need them. I am enough for myself.

I was browsing through Netflix while stuffing my face with another tub of ice cream to put on my third movie of the day when I heard the doorbell ring.

I hesitated but eventually got up to open the door to see who it was. Maybe mom and dad were here to suprise me? That is why she was in a hurry?

But when I opened the door, instead of greeting the faces of my parents I was met with two pairs of eyes.
