Thomas Gavinski POV
'How's our boy doing?' Grace, along with me, we are watching Derek giving speech to his supporters at the big hall full of flashes from cameras.
'I'll likely say he would already be drowning himself with alcohol if it wasn't for the campaign.' I crossed my arms, leaning against the metal railing at the backstage.
'You better do something.' Grace, without looking at me, commanded. She is looking unusually edgy. The news of Rachel has travelled fast.
'And he is ignoring me as well.' I informed her, in a deadpan voice. Grace take a look at me, like she was startled.
'Any news about her?' Grace tilted her nose high, whenever we mentioned about Rachel, she will unconsciously raise her air of snobbery.
'Of course.'
'That's not an answer.'
I sighed. 'Honestly, Grace, tell me, which answers serve you better? Would you feel insecure about your position if I told you that she is fine?'
'Her child is safe?' Grace's tone was doubtful.
'Good, that makes the two of us a sinner. No wonder my ex-wife told me I have changed to a person she no longer knew.'
'Thomas, I'm running out of patient.'
I stare at Derek, wondering what reaction would took over him if I broke the news to him. He, is my career, getting him to the White House is the glorious thing I have done in my whole life. I peered at Grace, she is stubbornly refusing to look away from me. I pursed my lips, exhausted and clamored with the disgruntled attitude Derek is treating me with.
'Thomas?' Grace called my name again.
'She doesn't allowed any visitors at the moment, and she is not answering Derek's call. Two days,' I show the number with my fingers, 'it's driving him crazy.'
We kept our conversation to a halt when Derek ends his speech. He knows how to put up political smiles and such. Nobody would have suspect his vexation over his mistress.
Derek storms inside the backstage. Grace put no effort in making any talk with him, clearly she knows that Derek doesn't want to speak to her at all.
'Any news?' Derek stops in front of me, he doesn't give a damn about his wife as well.
'We shouldn't talk about this here.' I replied softly.
I can see his face was infatuated, he gave a stare and storm away from Grace and I.
Grace POV
The familiar face mixed with confound and rage, he reminds me of the expression he gave to me when I lost our baby.
As selfish as I can, I needed him to focus. Two more months, all we have is two months.
'I'm not in the mood for any talk, Grace.' Frustrated, Derek refused to face me when I caught up with his speed.
'Derek.'
'No.' He hastened his footsteps when the black Limo is ahead of us.
'I know about it.' I managed to get his attention with those four words.
Derek gave me a baffled face.
'Let me get inside the car.' I negotiate with him.
He said nothing, except getting inside the car. Without seeking for his verbal approval, I followed him.
As soon as the machine starts. We left the premises and Derek was sitting in an uptight position, reading his phone. The foul face within him shows that Rachel haven't respond to him. What exactly is Rachel thinking? Why is she mad at him? What happened to her baby?
Derek store his phone inside his grey blazer pocket. 'I thought you have something to tell me?'
I peered at him, 'few weeks ago, I met her at the clinic, she wasn't ready for this.'
Derek stares at me with deep frown. One thing I am pretty sure that is running around his mind, and that is abortion. I stained his thought, I let him grow the root of negative ever since I took the decision of ending our baby's life.
'What do you mean she wasn't ready?' Derek tried to seek further.
'Did she not tell you about this?' He remained silent, and I knew the answer straight away. 'She should already been two months, when I met her, she was in her six weeks.' I toned down my voices. What's hidden beneath Derek's blank expression was the anger steaming inside his mind.
'She isn't taking my calls.' Slouched, his voice sounds rather depressing. 'I can't hold on to this anymore.'
Spontaneously, I place my hand around his shoulder. I guess I started to feel sympathy for him. 'You are doing great out there...' I look at him with my face slightly lowered, like a mother caring about her child. 'You should look for her, why would you want to learn the truth from other people? She might not have a chance to speak with you at all. Hear from her, Derek.'
He pad my hand, as if he accepted my advice and appreciated it. Somehow, I felt this feeling of familiarity slowly grow back to the both of us. We couldn't be like we thought we are suppose to be, but as the years passed by, I think we became family. There is no point hurting each other.
