Anna walked out of the building alone, got into the car, and said, âSorry, Ryan, the housekeeper has already picked them up. So, could you give me a ride back to the West Side?â
Surprised and irritated, Ryan asked, âThe West Side?â
Anna was putting on her seat belt. Hearing his words, she stopped. She then said, âAh, maybe I should take a cab. I donât want to bring you trouble.â
Ryan smiled, his expression immediately returning to normal. He said, âThatâs okay, I donât have anything to do anyway. Iâll drop you off right now.â
He looked naive and innocent. After seeing his expression, no one would doubt his words, let alone Anna, who trusted him.
Anna smiled along with him and said, âThank you. Itâs my fault, I went out too late. Wayneâs grandfather was worried about the two kids, so he had the housekeeper wait for them earlier. He picked up the kids when he found out I hadnât arrived.â
By the time they got to the West Side, it was already dark.
The security guard standing at the front door saw Anna. Then, he immediately stood up and greeted her by the passenger window, saying, âGood evening, young master, Miss Gabriel. Please wait a moment. The electronic system of the door is not working, so Iâll open it for you.â
Anna froze for a moment and laughed, âYoung master? Oh, no, heâs not Wayne.â
The guard was stunned, then looked closer at the man in the car. He then smiled and said, âSorry. It was so dark that I didnât see him clearly. I thought this gentleman was the young master. I was confused just now because I remembered that he was away on business. So, who is this one?â
âHeâs a friend of mine.â Anna replied.
After they entered the gate, Ryan drove into the yard. He drove for five minutes down that long driveway before pulling up to the door.
âIâll wait for you right here, Anna.â âOkay, thanks Iâll be out soon after I pick up the kids.â Anna said.
After she entered the mansion, Ryan looked out the window. His gaze became complicated as he saw the steps and the beautiful windows at the mansionâs front entrance.
A short time later, his phone rang sharply. Ryan glanced at the number, answered it, and said, âHi, mom.â
While he was on the phone, he heard someone knocking on the car window.
When Ryan looked up, he saw a young girl standing by the car window. She looked at him and then blinked her big eyes.
He opened the window and said, âHello, what can I do for you?â âAre you Ryan?â the girl asked instead of answering his question. Ryan froze for a moment, then became wary. He asked, âDo you know me?â
The girl shook her head and asked again, âAre you Ryan?â Seeing that she was a little goofy. Ryan nodded just a little.
The girl winked and said, âCome with me. My dad invited you to have dinner with us.â âWho? Your dad?â
âYeah, come on!â
Ryan had no idea what she was talking about. He got out of the car and followed the girl inside the courtyard. He looked at the girl and noticed that she was probably in her teens. She was skinny and petite and even a bit rustic. However, her beautiful blue eyes were very appealing âHey, whoâs your dad?â He couldnât help but ask.
The little girl asked again in return, âWho are you? How do you know Anna?â Ryan frowned and said, âIâm her brother.â âOh. In that case, Iâm your aunt.â Ryan immediately became somber and said, âWhat? Youâre kidding me?â This lunatic is kidding me! He thought to himself.
When the girl saw him turn and leave, she immediately grabbed his sleeve and said, âAh, where are you going? Iâve told you, weâre going to have dinner. You canât keep people waiting for you.â
Ryan rolled his eyes and tried to shake her hand off. He said, âWhat are you doing? And who on earth are you?! You little rascal!
I almost fell for it just now.â
The girl said, somewhat unhappily, âHey! Iâm the only daughter in this family. You donât believe me, do you?â
She looked around and then waved toward the maid who was tidying the garden in the distance. She said, âHi, could you please come over here?â
The maid walked over, wiped her hands on her apron, and said respectfully, âWhatâs wrong, Miss Wright?â
The girl glared at Ryan and asked, âDid you hear that? Iâve told you! Well, stop talking and keep walking, okay?â
âNo way! Mr. Wright is over seventy years old, right? How is it possible that youâre his daughter? Stop lying to me.â Ryan frowned, still not believing her.
âWhy? Why canât he have a daughter in his seventies?â âBecause...â Ryan froze, not knowing how to answer her.
If someone else had asked him that, he would have thought that person was a moron. But, this little girl looked very young, so she probably really didnât know why. Therefore, Ryan had no idea how to explain it to her âOops, stop talking! Letâs go. Chop-chop, Ryan, Iâm starving.â The girl didnât seem to want to talk nonsense with him anymore.
She grabbed his wrist and led him towards the courtyard.
The maid immediately shouted, âOops! Miss, watch your step!â
Just after reaching the dining room, the girl immediately let go of Ryanâs hand. She darted toward the table and exclaimed, âSoufflé! This is my favorite!â
Ryan stood in the doorway. When he saw Peter, he couldnât help but frown.
Anna said and brought him back to his senses, âRyan, please have a seat. Itâs already late, so Grandpa asked us to have dinner here. Do you mind?â
Ryan snapped back and said in a slightly raspy voice, âNo, I donât mind.â
Anna smiled and pulled out the chair beside her. She introduced him to Peter, âGrandpa, this is Ryan. Iâve told you about him.â
Peter nodded and said, âMatthew told me about him, too. Ah, heâs such a nice chap. Please sit down, and letâs eat together.â
Matthew and Tammy sat across the table and ate quietly. Tammy said a few words to Peter now and then and made him laugh.
Matthew could not speak and could only laugh in a low voice. Anna looked at him and felt heartbroken.
She couldnât help but ask, âGrandpa, is it true that Matthew canât talk because he has a fever?â
Peter stopped laughing and said thoughtfully, âThatâs right. He has refused to talk since he had the fever. We have no idea why.â
âOh. Then, what about the nanny? Has the nanny been fired? Do you have her number?â Peter frowned and asked, âWhy are you bringing this up?â
Anna didnât know how to answer for a moment âMatthew has spoken before. So, maybe the reason he couldnât talk was not the fever. Perhaps he can talk, but just wonât for some reason.â Ryan suddenly said.
Peterâs eyes widened, and he asked, âWhat? Matthew has spoken? When?â
Anna didnât expect Ryan to say anything about it. She froze for a moment and explained, âHe only spoken twice, once in front of Wayne and the other time in front of me. He only said the word âmommyâ, but he was very articulate.â
Peter became happy. He looked at Matthew, who was sitting in a daze and immediately had tears in his eyes. He said happily, âThatâs really good. Itâs okay, we have plenty of time. Iâll have Henry give you that nannyâs number in a minute.â
