As he spoke, the doctor handed Anna a white handkerchief and said, âHere you go. This is a brand-new oneâ
Anna thanked him and wiped the sweat from her face with the handkerchief, explaining, âI drove a seriously injured person here, then | stopped by to help.â
Really? But | think you are very professional. Are you a medical student?â
Anna appeared to be younger than her actual age. She was dressed in a pink coat and had tied her hair in a ponytail to make it easier to move around. As a result, she looked like she was a college student.
She shook her head, recalling what had happened. âNo, Iâm not,â she said.
The doctor insisted, âNo, Iâm sure youâre a medical student! You did it professionally, and you were able to identify the patientâs injuries. So, Iâm guessing youâre a medical student or a doctor. In what hospital do you work? Well, it doesnât matter, but Iâm curious.â
Anna was irritated and said, âIâm not even a medical student! They should have sent over the injured by now, so | should go. Itâs time for you to start working,â
The doctor then jumped out of the ambulance. Heâd only taken a few steps when he returned and asked, âMay I have your phone number?â
Before Anna could say anything, she heard a man behind her say, Anna, Iâve been looking for you for a long time. Letâs go home.â
The doctor froze. When he turned around, he saw a tall man standing 318 We Need to Talk, Anna behind him. Even though the man was some distance away, he could still feel his compelling aura.
He realized that a beautiful and kind woman like Anna couldnât possibly be available anymore. He sighed in frustration as he entered the hospital.
Anna had been standing at the ambulanceâs back door. Her heart skipped a beat when she saw Wayne and immediately stood up straight. She hadnât expected Wayne to be here, so she was taken aback by his presence âWhat exactly are you doing here?â She asked, surprised.
Wayne approached her. âLetâs go home, take a shower, and have dinner,â he said without further explanation.
Anna nodded as she looked down at the blood stain on her jacket. They remained silent on the cab ride home, not even mentioning their big fight.
When Anna got home, she went straight to the bathroom. Her coat still smelled like hospital sterile water and blood, but her rose-
scented body wash had covered it up.
Anna remained in a trance as the warm water rinsed the foam from her back.
After finishing taking a shower, Anna opened the bathroom door and she smelled the delicious scent of dinner. She froze for a moment before walking out of the bedroom, towelling off her hair.
She was surprised when she saw the table piled with food.
âLetâs have dinner, Anna.â Wayne brought two bowls from the kitchen and placed a bowl of soup in front of Anna.
Anna looked at the wall clock and saw it was twelve oâclock. âAre we 318 We Need to Talk, Anna having a midnight snack?â she asked, perplexed.
âYes, we are. You must be starving now, right?â Wayne asked, handing her a fork.
âHow did you know?â Anna asked, lowering her head to sip her soup.
âMona told me.â
Anna frowned and asked, âHuh? Did she even tell you that? What else did she say to you?â
âShe also said that the deceased lady in the ward was not you.â
Anna froze and slowly raised her head.
Wayneâs eyes were red, but she didnât notice because the light was dim, and he kept his head down. He appeared tired and haggard as if he hadnât slept in a long time.
âWhat exactly is going on?â She asked, perplexed. Then she started speculating about what had happened while she was volunteering to help the injured back then.
Wayne exhaled deeply and said, âLetâs just eat, Anna. Weâll talk about that later.â
âAbout what?â conversation wouldnât be pleasant.
incomfortably, Anna asked. She had a feeling that the âLetâs go over what has happened since we first met. Then we can sort out and solve all issues of our relationship.â
Anna straightened her back and looked at him with a frown. She paused for a moment before asking nervously, âWhat if we cannot resolve these issues? Then what are we gonna do?â
And she thought, Wayne, are you going to talk to me about Matthewâs so-called âbirth motherâ? If youâre gonna tell me that you insist on letting 318 We Need to Talk, Anna Matthew spend some time with her alone despite the fact that Iâm strongly against the terrible idea, then weâll have nothing to talk about. And, if thatâs really the case, | sure will do whatever lean to take Matthew away from you. And | might even break up with you.
Then Wayne frowned and appeared dissatisfied when he heard what she said. He said, âLetâs not get into that right now. Anna, try this pie.â
He wanted to talk to her about everything, including the fact that he had already found out that Sophia turned out to be a phony.
On the other hand, Anna was still waiting to hear what he had to say.
âNo, Iâm not hungry,â she replied.
However, her stomach growled as she finished speaking, much to her embarrassment. The sound was so clear in the quiet, empty room that she awkwardly touched her hair.
âStop it, Anna,â Wayne said as he handed her a plate of macaroni and cheese.
So, Anna began to eat.
Anna quickly ate all the food on the table before looking down, rubbing her stomach, and saying, âSo, Iâm done. Go ahead, tell me what you want to talk about.â
âAnna, first of all, Iâm sorry. Youâre right. Sophia isnât Matthewâs birth mother at all. And thank goodness Iâve run a thorough background check on her in time. Otherwise, Matthew...â
Saying that, Wayne lowered his head, pursing his lips in embarrassment.
âItâs okay, Wayne. At least you listened to me and Matthew is safe and sound now. But you have to promise me that things like this wonât happen 318 We Need to Talk, Anna again,â Slightly frowning, Anna said to Wayne seriously.
âOkay, | promise you. You have my word. And secondly, youâve probably already realized that | will know everything | want to know about you without asking you, right?â Wayne said Anna furrowed her brow and seemed unhappy. She realized she had known Wayne was a condescending person who didnât seem to respect others since the first time she met him.
However, to Annaâs surprise, Wayne then said, âBut I donât want to look into things about you because | would prefer you tell me about them yourself. | want you to tell me everything about you and your past. If you donât want to discuss it, then I wonât pressure you into doing it.â
Anna froze and then stared in awe at Wayne.
âDo you understand what Iâm talking about, Anna? Nobody can tell me if youâve ever loved anyone other than me. Iâm not sure how much you care about me, and Iâm not sure why you always consider keeping a distance from me or even breaking up with me when things go wrong between us.â
Wayne had always appeared calm, but at that moment, he seemed panicked and helpless. Anna was his only weakness, the person he cared about the most. And he wanted the entire world to know how much he adored her.
After a brief pause, Wayne continued, âYouâve been wondering what | was going to say to you, and you probably thought what I was going to say would disappoint you so much that you might even consider ending our relationship. But Anna, | want you to know that Iâve never ever thought of breaking up with you even though sometimes my behavior might make you misunderstand me. Again, Iâm sorry about that.â
Hearing that, Anna was so astonished that she failed to utter a single
