On Saturday morning, while Anna was still sleeping, Tammy pulled her up. âMommy, time to get up.â
Anna looked at the alarm clock drowsily and said desperately, âTam, itâs only seven oâclock. What are you doing?â
Tammy held her arm and wouldnât let go. She said firmly, âMommy, itâs the first time that you go to Uncle Wrightâs house.
Shouldnât you get dressed up? Come on. Have a shower. Put some makeup on. Get changed.â
Holding the pillow in her arms, Anna felt hopeless. Why does my daughter keep pushing me to every man she meets?
With Tammy badgering her, Anna put on a light makeup and took out a T-shirt and a pair of jeans that she usually wore on weekends from the wardrobe. Before she put them on, Tammy had taken them away.
âMommy, how can you wear these?â âWhat else can i wear?â âThis one.â Tammy pulled out a burgundy backless dress, âThis one is pretty.â
âAre you crazy?â Anna patted on her forehead angrily, âIâm not going to a night club. Besides, this is a cocktail dress. Weâre only going to your classmateâs house. Do I need to dress so formally?â
âWhat about this one?â Tammy wouldnât give up and pulled out another gray-blue dress, âThis one must be suitable.â
Anna took that dress and looked at it carefully for a while. She agreed that it was pretty, but she still hesitated, âWonât it be inconvenient to wear a dress? You two will jump up and down.â
âNo, we wonât.â Tammy raised her hand and promised, âI promise I will behave myself today.â
âYeah, like I will believe you.â
Anna was going to ignore her suggestion, but she kept pestering her and wouldnât let her wear the T-shirt and the jeans. At last, she could do nothing but to wear that blue dress.
When Anna just cooked the breakfast at nine, Wayneâs butler had arrived at their apartment to pick them up to the house.
âMr. Wright has an important meeting, so heâs not at home now. He told me to drive you and Tammy there first.â
âAlright.â Anna said. The butler was a man in his early forties. He looked stable and drove steadily.
âToo many accidents happened to Matthew during this time. Mr. Wright has been upset and changed almost all the servants. He didnât trust anyone now. Iâm quite surprised that he invited you to the house.â
âProbably because I saved Matthew once, he didnât think I would hurt him.â Anna smiled, though she couldnât believe what she said. Iâm surprised, too. Who knows what he was thinking.
Tammy sat up in the child seat and sighed like an adult when hearing them talk about Matthewâs injury. Anna noticed and asked, âWhy did you sigh? Youâre still a child.â
âIâm worried about Matthew.â Tammy twisted her eyebrows, âLook. Matthew canât talk, and he is so unlucky. I have never seen an unluckier child than him. Mommy, our teacher said Mercury retrograde made us feel unlucky. Has the Mercury affected Matthew?â
âWhat Mercury? That astrological thing is so superstitious. Which teacher told you so? I canât believe you take it seriously.â
Anna didnât know whether Matthew was unlucky, but she did feel sorry for him. Thave only known him for two months, and he has already had two severe accidents. If I hadnât warded off the chandelier, he would probably lose his life. If he had hit his head this time, he would also lose his life. Are these really accidents? She suddenly became suspicious.
Once they arrived at the house in Kingsford Neighborhood and got out of the car, a little boy rocketed out of the house and held Annaâs legs.
The maid followed the boy, âMatthew, you havenât washed your face yet.â
Anna lifted Matthew from the ground, âHavenât washed your face? Itâs alright. I can take him to wash. Where is the bathroom?â
The maid quickly pointed to a direction. She followed Anna while looking at her up and down and glancing at Tammy and said, âYou must be Ms. Gabriel. Youâre really young to have a daughter as old as Matthew.â
After walking inside, Tammy looked around with sparkles in her eyes. Matthewâs home is so big! Look at the staircase! You can walk up the stairs from three entries! There are even elevators in the house! She immediately started talking with the young maid.
Anna certainly didnât know what her daughter was thinking. She took Matthew to the bathroom to wash his face and brush his teeth. She asked, âIâve brough some snacks I made this morning. Do you want to have a bite with us?â
Matthew nodded happily.
Anna and the two kids sat at the dining table and opened the lunch box she brought. The maid saw that Anna was going to feed something to Matthew, she suddenly stopped her in panic, âPlease wait, Ms. Gabriel. Matthew is not allowed to eat food from outside.â
âWhat?â Anna asked in surprise, with a scone in her hand.
The butler glowered at the maid and rounded on her, âStop talking nonsense. Mr. Wrightâs invitation is a sign that he trusts Ms.
Gabriel. Why canât you understand? What food from outside? In Mr. Wrightâs and Matthewâs eyes, Ms. Gabrielâs food must be safer than yours.â
The maid went pale.
The butler then ordered, âOK. You can leave. You donât need to look after Matthew now. Mr. Wright has told us to make Ms.
Gabriel and Tammy feel at home. Iâll call you when necessary.â
After this, the few maids all left.
Anna was finally relieved. She gave the butler a thankful glance, âThey finally leave. I feel uncomfortable to eat under their gaze.â
The butler bowed his head apologetically, âItâs my fault that I havenât given them the order. Please take your time. You can call me or any other servant if you want.â
âOK.â After this incident, Anna finally relaxed and enjoyed her breakfast.
Matthew ate a lot this time, two scones and a banana pudding and a glass of milk. The maids were astonished by his appetite, so they started whispering to each other.
These maids were just hired after the accident, so they were not familiar with the rules in the house and didnât realize how imprudent they were to gossip about Anna.
âWhy does Matthew like Ms. Gabriel so much?â âIt is said sheâs the mother of Matthewâs classmate. That little girl there.â
âThat little girl is so adorable. She gave me some sweets just now. Does Matthew have a crush on that little girl?â
âStop it. They are still little children.â
âJust kidding! But Ms. Gabriel seems really special for Mr. Wright. The maid who worked here before said that Mr. Wright never brought women back. Even his fiancé, Miss Xavier, has only come here for a few times in the past five or six years.â
âWait. Does Mr. Wright and Ms. Gabriel...â
