Chapter 22: Part 21: Awkward Kissing

Apartment No.4Words: 9215

"You just need a little blush, these lights make you look washed out." Complained Mel as she kept coming at me with makeup and I tried my best to swat her away as best I could without wincing from pain.

Mason had left two hours ago and as soon as he left I was internally begging for him to come back.

"Mel, seriously stop. It's not the lights, I am washed out. I lost a solid amount of blood." Her face turned grave and she slumped in the chair beside me.

"I still can't believe you survived. When Cam and I finally made it to you, you were being wheeled into the ambulance." She stared intensely at me and I held her gaze before she looked away to stare at her handbag.

"You were so still." She whispered. "I thought I'd lost you." A saw a tear slip down her cheek and reached my arm out to her.

"Hey, you can't get rid of me that easily." I joked, pulling her the best I could towards the bed. She took her place on the end by my feet and and sat cross legged opposite me.

Not long after, Cameron came it with a bunch of roses and a 'get-well' bear.

I laughed as he shoved the bear out proudly in front of him and placed it in my lap. He kissed my cheek and sat in the chair that Mel had previously occupied.

"How are you feeling?" He asked, smiling sympathetically at me then to Mel.

"Very sore and tired, but since I've lost three days I want to stay awake." Every now and then I could feel my eyelids dropping and I tried my best to keep them open.

"Well, I did bring every season of Gossip Girl from your flat so you can fall asleep in style." I fist pumped the air then winced. Note to self 2: don't move, it hurts. Cam always knew how to make someone laugh when they're at their worst, and I had a feeling that he and Mel were pretty much forever, which was great but that did mean I wouldn't get to see her so much.

"Where was Mason?" I asked, trying not to be too suspicious but I could see Mel's smile forming out the corner of my eye.

"He was there having a shower, I just ducked in and grabbed them."

Halfway through a game of monopoly I dozed off, and I could faintly hear them leaving through my exhausted slumber. I woke up a few hours later alone and in silence other than the annoying beep beep beep of the monitor.

I hated being a nuisance but I was parched, like seriously thirsty, you could use my tongue for sandpaper... that'd be weird though.

Pressing the little nurse button on a buzzer attached to my bed to get someone's attention I laid my head back until someone came.

The door opened to a very tall and very handsome looking male nurse who actually took my breath away.

He had caramel coloured hair with natural blonde streaks that suited his strong tanned body nicely.

He smiled when he saw me.

"Hey, everything alright?" He asked, coming in and closing the door behind him. He came over and pulled my blankets tight and flat, something that all the nurses did when they came in to check on me - I didn't know if it was mandatory or if I was just a messy sleeper.

"Uh yeah, I was just wondering if I could grab something to drink, please?" I asked, when he was standing beside the monitor checking my heart rate.

"Sure thing, I'll be back in a moment." He smiled a gorgeous smile that reminded me of Mason and I felt my heart flutter. I missed Mason. Even in the few hours he'd been gone I was already wishing he was back, so much so that when the nurse walked away I literally thought it was him.. what's wrong with me? Mental note, ask if the pain meds give you hallucinations.

I totally missed Mason.

As if he read my mind, a fresh faced and clean shaven Mason walked through the door with a sports bag full of clothes and a giant kit-Kat.

"Oh thank god!" I said, reaching for the kit-Kat, and then for him. He smelled like shampoo and his musky body wash and I felt a weird urge to lick himself. What the hell is going on with me?

I pulled him by his shirt down to me so I could kiss him and he returned it gladly.

"Hello to you too." He joked, a smile plain as day on his face. I chuckled an awkward and breathy laugh.

I felt my face slip into a pout before I could stop it.

"What's wrong?" He questioned, as I dragged my fingertips along his smooth jaw.

"I liked scruffy Mason." God I sounded like a three year old, but hey, I was in hospital and I could say whatever I wanted. Internal 'hmph'.

He chuckled before rubbing his jaw where my hands had been. Leaning down to peck me again.

"I'll grow it back for you." He winked and I smiled proudly.

"How was your nap?" I asked as he put the bag on the bed and unzipped it.

"Good, but I had trouble getting to sleep. I felt bad for leaving you." He said, resting his hands in the bag and looking at me with a soft and genuine smile that made my heart dance.

"Mel and Cam came over and we played monopoly, all good." I waved my hand but winced at the pain.

His lips pressed into a straight line and his brows furrowed at my reaction.

"Well, I thought you might be more comfortable in your own clothes so..." he pulled out my pyjamas and a jumper and it took all of my strength to not jump up and down in my seat and reach for them.

"Sweet! Thank you so much!" I sighed, attempting to open the Kit-Kat with one hand and failing miserably.

I ended up just throwing it angrily at my feet which earned a laugh from Mason and a glare from me.

"Have a break." He said and I rolled my eyes at the pun. He opened it perfectly and slipped a piece into my mouth.

I smiled a mouth full of Kit-Kay smile, just as the nurse returned with a jug of water and a cup.

I swallowed the chocolate quickly.

"Ah! You are a legend, thank you." I said, as he poured me a cup of water and left the jug on the table beside my bed. I unintentionally did what most girls do and watched him walk out with a lingering stare that was only inappropriate if someone else saw...

He chuckled and winked at me before leaving the room. Giving Mason not so much as a glance on the way out.

I turned to Mason and stared at the Kit-Kat bar in his hands, licking my lips. It was then that I noticed he had is arms crossed.

"What?" I asked when I looked up to see he was glaring down at me.

"What the hell was that?" He ground out, still in his stiff stance and I tried to look as innocent as possible.

"I asked for a drink and he brought me one." It was more of a question. Yeah, he was hot but if Mason was thinking I was into the nurse he was being silly. I had my own Greek god and I wasn't planning on trading my Brad Pitt Achilles anytime soon.

"No, what was the flirting?" He finally moved, even if it was to throw his hands up in the air.

"Mason, I wasn't flirting with him." I said flat and truthfully, staring him square in the eyes and not blinking. Apparently saying thank you is flirting. I'll never understand that about guys.

He bore his emerald eyes into mine and his mouth was set in a deep scowl. Then I thought of something that was highly embarrassing but surely would boost Masons ego.

Internally rolling my eyes, I reached for him but he hesitated momentarily so I gave him a look of 'really?' and he moved with a huff, sitting on the edge of the bed beside me.

"Look, I know that we have gone to hell and back but I'm not afraid to admit it anymore... I want you, you're the only one that I want and I was never happy with Lucas. Any time or space that I was in with him, I was comparing him to you. And right now, sitting in a hospital bed with broken ribs, a broken arm and a massive headache, I realise that I don't want to waste anymore time denying that I need you in my life as more than just a roommate or a friend. And I'm sick of running from everything."

He just sat there staring at me and I was worried that I had overstepped the line. Maybe he did just see me as a fling, as a short time filler. Oh god, what have I done?

Then, a smile appeared on his face and he opened his mouth to say something before biting his lip which did nothing to reduce the size of his grin.

Then he leaned forward, his hand at the back of my neck tangled in my hair and kissed me firmly.

Then came the embarrassing part. I felt around on the bed for the nurse button and pressed it two or three times.

Mason and I continued kissing and when I heard the door open I continued for a few more seconds before pulling back and looking towards the door where sexy surfer nurse was standing looking very awkward.

Mason looked confused before he turned his gaze in the direction of mine, and I noticed a smug grin pop onto his face.

"Uh, sorry. Was there, ahem, anything I could get you?" He asked, scratching the back of his neck and not looking me in the eye.

"No... I didn't press the buzzer did I?" I asked, acting dumb and confused, turning back to Mason questioningly.

"Uh yeah, you must have pressed it accidentally. Sorry." And he left leaving his words chilling in the air and I had to fight back with all my might the laugh and grin that was preparing to erupt from my body.

I shrugged at Mason and he looked at me quizzically as though he knew my plan.

"Did you do that on purpose?" He asked, his eyes squinted a little and his mouth in a cute purse.

"Why would I do that? That's just weird." I mumbled, pulling another piece of Kit-Kat from the wrapper.
