The frigid, resonant voice sliced through the phone, reaching Millyâs ears and making her heart skip a beat. The words she had prepared suddenly seemed to stick in her throat.
âUm⦠I â¦
âWhat was she supposed to say now?
âHeh.â A soft chuckle emanated from the other end, laced with an inexplicable indulgence. âTake your time.â
Milly blushed at his laughter.
She believed she could be ruthless and unfeeling, decisive and swift, with the wisdom of two lifetimes. But hearing his voice for just a moment left her flustered.
She coughed and forced herself to calm down. âJoy told me that you saved me when I fell into the water on set. Thank you.â
Silence followed.
After a moment, he only said, âHmm.
âDid you call just to say that?â
His tone seemed to shift, becoming subdued as if she had said something wrong.
Remembering something, she quickly added, âOh, right, thereâs something
I got
the helicopter and the truckload of gifts. Joy said they were from you too. But didnât you say youâd give them to me only after I got into Crestfallen University? Why did you send them early?â
Instead of answering directly, he asked, âDo you like it?â
Milly was taken aback and responded honestly, âI like it, but isnât it too extravagant?â
âNot at all.â
His tone was unnervingly calm, as if he were discussing something trivial.
Silence enveloped them once more.
Milly regretted calling George on Joyâs suggestion. She sensed he was angry, but she couldnât discern the reason for his displeasure.
Initially, his mood seemed fine when he answered the phone.
Could her call have disturbed him? That seemed plausible upon reflection.
âWell, if thereâs nothing else, Iâll just-â
âDid you give the sachet to Jonathan?â His deep voice interrupted her midâsentence.
Milly was taken aback. It was the second time she had heard this question today. The first was Anthony five minutes ago.

Anthonyâs intentions were clear; she could easily guess what he wanted. But why was George suddenly bringing it up?
She replied tentatively, âIt was Jonathanâs birthday gift.â
âI have my birthday in over two hundred days, and I have trouble sleeping too.â
It was almost as if he was blatantly asking for a gift.
Milly sighed, sensing a strange jealousy between these men. It seemed she was so exhausted she was imagining absurd things.
âThen can I make you a sachet too? Iâll add some cassia seeds, is that okay?â
Silence again.
Listening to the rhythmic âthump thump thumpâ from the other end as if he was knocking on something. Milly grew anxious, uncertain of what he was doing.
If he hadnât saved her life, she might have hung up already.
After a pause, his voice returned, âI donât like using the same thing as other men.â
Milly was speechless.
âOn your birthday, Iâll throw in a handmade gift thatâs way better than that sachet of his, itâs totally oneâof- aâkind worldwide. Howâs that?â
When those words slipped out, even she was taken aback.
It was exactly what sheâd said a few minutes ago to calm Anthony.
But miraculously, the icy, resentful tone softened instantly. âAlright,â
Milly said nothing.
Could it be that in this storyâs universe, those words possess some sort of enchanting power? Are they a charm that can instantly ease someoneâs anger when spoken?
Georgeâs smile lingered until he ended the call.
Beside him, the bald middleâaged man, delivering a work report, trembled uncontrollably, unsure if the CEOâs smile signalled his doorn.
He wished heâd taken his heart pills before the meeting
âUm, sir, about my project proposalâ¦
George set his phone down, reclined in his bossâs chair with a satisfied look, and parted his lips. âHmm, well put, please, go ahead.â

At that moment, the entire conference room seemed to breathe easier, spirits lifting. Everyone wiped the sweat from their brows, relieved to have dodged another close call.
But who wielded such influence to turn the stern CEO into a genial figure with just one call? What kind of benevolent being was this?
Everyone had the same questions.
The only one in the room privy to the CEOâs true intentions, Danny, breathed a sigh of relief, thankful for his quick thinking. If heâd hung up on Milly, his fate wouldâve been sealed.
After ending the call, Milly released a prolonged exhale, finally grasping the challenge of appeasing
someone.
Had she known a mere sachet could incite such chaos, sheâd never have offered it!
Suddenly, a piercing shriek disrupted the silence. Jonathan, you cur!â
Milly froze. What is this guy up to now? Did he also unearth me giving Jonathanthe sachet? Unlikely. His intellect wouldnât allow such a revelation.
Enter Oliver, his vibrant pink hair signaling his agitation. âDâmmit, dâmmit, dâmmit! Jonathan stooped to
devious tactics!â
Milly blinked in bewilderment. âWhat?â
âLook at this!â Oliver thrust his phone forward, teeth grinding with feline fury. âSee? He pulled a dirty trick
on me!
âI asked Robin to boost my social media presence by celebrating my bravery in conquering the haunted house. Instead, Jonathan went wild, flooding the feed with a shattered sachet, eclipsing my heroic deed!â
