Jordan maintained his composure as he spoke, âWhen you were adopted, our parents and I took care of all the formalities. The policy allowed us to adopt you only until you were eighteen. Itâs quite a coincidence that youâve returned just as youâre reaching adulthood. Maybe itâs destiny.
âHowever, thereâs no need for concern. As siblings, Iâll ensure you receive five percent of Burnett Groupâs shares as dividends, which will secure your financial future. If you choose to work, Iâll find a suitable position for you within the company.â
At this, Stephanieâs expression grew even paler, her hands clenching nervously as she shook with the weight of the news.
Could her charmed life be unraveling?
Impossible! She could not accept it!
She was a Burnett and the rightful heiress to Burnett Group. Her spirit would not be easily dimmed.
âI donât want to go anywhere! I am a Burnett by birth, a Burnett till the end. I donât want to leave!â Stephanie implored through tears.
Xavier chimed in, defending her, Jordan, sheâs our sister. Weâve grown up together. How can we just cast her aside now? What if her biological family isnât kind to her?â
Jonathan added anxiously, âExactly. The adoption might be up, but we can renew it. Iâm sure Mom and Dad wouldnât want her to go.â
Jordan looked at Stephanie silently, contemplating
If Stephanie were truly honest and wellâbehaved, he could easily envision a peaceful future treating her as his real sister. However, that was not the case.
Setting past grievances aside, Jordan reflected on Stephanieâs short official tenure as a recognised family member. How often had she caused disturbances, both overtly and covertly? What if her luck ran out in the future?
Could she continually avoid consequences?
The Smithsâ visit this evening had illuminated a stark reality: Stephanieâs uninhibited joyâa stark contrast to her usual demeanour with the Burnettsâsuggested a lingering emotional distance. At that moment, Jordan felt a twinge of remorse.
This decision, then, was dualâpurpose: not only for Stephanieâs sake but also as a means for Jordan to rectify his past mistakes.
âLetâs await the test results before further discussion,â Jordan announced firmly. âI will explain the situation. to Mom and Dad myself. Thatâs all for now, please, go rest. With that, he left the room, his expression: unreadable, ignoring the stunned silence of his siblings.
Stephanie, drained and visibly shaken, collapsed into the nearest chair, tears staining her cheeks.
Seeing his sisterâs distress, Xavier approached soothingly, âDonât worry, Stephanie. Jordan was just upset. Heâs always been good to you; he wonât really send you away. Iâll talk to him later.â

Jonatha chimed in, hoping to ease her worry, âYeah, I think he was just trying to shock us into understanding. Heâs not cruel.â
As he spoke, even he began to feel a twinge of doubt. The serious look on their older brotherâs face earlier seemed all too real,
Stephanie could not hold back her fears any longer and burst into tears. âWhat should I do? I donât want to leave! I canât bear to be separated from all of you⦠I donât want to be abandoned
Her usual haughtiness was nowhere to be seen. Under the weight of her predicament, and still just a minor, crying was her only refuge.
Her tears triggered a wave of anxiety in Xavier and Jonathan. âPlease, Stephanie, donât cry, Xavier pleaded, trying to soothe her. âWeâre right here with you, and as long as weâre together, no one can hurt you.â
âBut will Jordan even listen to you?â Stephanie sobbed, her voice muffled by her tears.
Jonathan paused. âWellâ¦â
He knew his influence was limited; how could he expect their eldest brother to heed his advice? Stephanieâs weeping intensified.
Xavier, the eldest among them, said calmly, âWe might not be able to change his mind ourselves, but there is someone who could.â
Jonathan, unable to stand the suspense, demanded an answer. âWho? Donât leave us hanging at a time like this; tell us!â
As her tears subsided, hope flickered in Stephanieâs eyes.
âGrandpa has recently recovered from his surgery and is ready to return home, Xavier explained with
reassurance.
Jonathan clapped his hands in realisation. âExactly! Why didnât I think of that sooner? We might not have the power to change Jordanâs decision, but Grandpa certainly can. Stephanie, call him now!â
Wiping her tears, Stephanie nodded and quickly dialled the number.
Elsewhere, Leon had barely taken a few steps when his phone buzzed in his pocket, flashing a barrage of angry texts across the screen.
Answering the call, he was immediately greeted with a tirade. âYou thief, Leon! Did you steal my clothes? Those pieces were for my upcoming competition! Theyâre not yet revealed to the public!â
Leon held the phone slightly away, waiting for the other to finish, then replied calmly, âYes, I took them, but I left compensation for you.
The caller was livid. The sound of a chair crashing echoed through the speaker.
âCompensation? You left a bank card but didnât even give me the pin! Or is it just a useless piece of plastic?â
lenoring the outburst, Leon replied, âThe pin is 091652â

The line went quiet as the caller checked the account. Moments later, the voice returned, filled with astonishment. âGosh! Tens, hundreds, thousands, millions? Did you really give me that much money for a few clothes? Is this all the money youâve made?â
Leonâs brow furrowed slightly. âNot all, but nearly.â
âMan, you really donât hold back, do you? Youâve risked your life for this money! Who deserves to spend such a huge chunk of your wealth on a dress? Is it really worth it?â
Worth it?
Leon paused, his thoughts drifting to Milly.
He remembered her delight at seeing the dress and her eyes sparkling with joy. Was it worth it? To him, even if it cost his life, it certainly was.
âLeon? You still there?â
