Don't Touch My Headphones
"Hey, Opal," Gemma says, her head peeking into my room. I look up at her from my phone. Immediately, I notice that she has done her hair into a sleek ponytail. And she only does that when we're going out somewhere.
"Uh, hey," I reply, placing my headphones off my head so it can rest on my shoulders. "What do you want?"
Gemma steps in my room. "Mom says we're having dinner with her co-worker's family. So, you gotta get ready. We're about to leave soon."
I let out a groan, as I stand up from my bed. "Do I have to go?"
"Yes, Opal. You have to go. Why do you think mom sent me up here to tell you," she sighs. "Mom said wear something nice." And Gemma exits my room.
I roll my eyes as I head to my closet to pick an outfit. I go through a few of my clothes, and after a while, I decide on my blue wool sweater and skinny jeans. I jog downstairs to find my mom and sister waiting for me at the front door.
"Finally. Come on, I told them we'd meet them at 6," my mom says, as she opens the door and heads outside. Both me and my sister follow. I make my way to mom's car. I try to open the door, but then I realize it's locked.
"Mom, the car is still locked. Can you open it?" I ask her.
"Opal, we're not taking the car. Their house is very close. We could just walk there," my mom says.
Oh, I thought as I let go of the handle. I jog over to my mom and sister as they make their way across the street. I watch my mom lead the way, as she heads to the door step of a house just in front of ours.
But the thing is, we're in front of the house that Nathan said was his.
Hell no. I'm not going in there.
Slowly, I back away from the house, planning to make a run for it. "Opal, what are you doing? Get over here," Gemma says quietly.
I let out a sigh, as I walk back to the house.
The door clicks open, revealing a lady, about my mom's age. I quickly notice her green eyes, as she gives us a welcoming smile.
"Angela!" The lady exclaims, as she gives my mom a hug. Then, she pulls away to look at me and Gemma. "Are these your kids? They're beautiful."
"Thank you," I reply at the compliment, with a smile on my face.
"What are their names?"
"This is Gemma and Opal," my mom says.
"Oh, come inside. I just finished baking some brownies," she says, leading us inside to the living.
"Sit down," she says, gesturing to the couch. Then, she looks upward and calls out, "Nathan! Ella! Can you guys come downstairs, please?"
After a while, I hear footsteps walking down the stairs. Then, there's a few giggles. "Faster, horsey! Faster!" A little girl squeals.
"But I'm tired," a familiar voice groans. It was Nathan's.
Finally, he walks into the living room, with a little girl on his back. Just like her mom and brother, she has green eyes as well.
Lucky..
"Guys, say hello to Mrs. Rodriguez," their mom instructs them. "These are her daughters, Gemma and Opal."
"Hi!" Ella says, waving her hand, still on her brother's back.
Nathan's eyes meet mine, and he gives me a small smirk. "Mom, Opal and I already met."
"Oh, really?" My mom asks curiously.
"Yea. I'm in her class, and I gave her a ride home once," he replies, looking at my mom.
"So you already know Nathan?" My mom asks, facing me.
Unfortunately.
I nod my head. "Yep," I mumble.
"Oh, that's great! Why don't you all head upstairs? I'm still preparing the table," his mom says.
Gemma and I stand up and follow Nathan up the stairs, with Ella still on his back.
~
I scroll through my songs, as I relax on a couch. Nathan brought us to the attic, where there's a lounging area.
Ella is sitting on the carpet, playing with her toys, as her brother and my sister chat in the corner. It's really weird.
Gemma is twirling her hair around her finger and stuff. Nathan just looks awkward, scratching the back of his head.
I let out a laugh, as I realize my sister is trying to flirt with him.
Glad I can't hear them.
I close my eyes as I hum to the music being played through my headphones.
After a while, I feel someone tap my leg. I open my eyes to see Ella staring at me curiously. I pause the song.
"What are you listening to?" she asks.
"You want to hear it?" I say, smiling. She nods her head in reply. I take my headphones off and gently place them on her. Then, I play the song.
Her eyes brighten and soon, she's nodding her head to the rhythm. "I like this song," she says, smiling shyly.
"Me, too. It's called Dangerous Woman," I say.
"Hey," I hear. I look up to see Nathan, staring at me.
"Nathan, listen to this song!" Ella exclaims, holding out my headphones to her brother.
"Actually, I would like them back, Ella," I say, holding out my hand.
"Oh, okay," she says, placing them in the palm of my hand. She walks back to the carpet, and continues to play with her toys.
I look up at Nathan. "So, where's my sister?"
"She went downstairs. Not to be rude, but she's really annoying," he says awkwardly.
"Trust me, I already know. I lived with her for almost 17 years," I sigh.
"You're 17?" He asks.
"Almost. My birthday is actually next week," I explain. "You?"
"I'm already 17. I'm turning 18 in October," he replies.
I nod my head in understanding. I'm about to press play once I get my headphones on, when I hear him clear his throat.
"Did you know that your name is my birthstone?"
I look up at him, and stare into his green eyes. "You don't say?" I ask, obviously interested.
"Yep," he replies with a smile, sticking his hands in his pockets.
"Thanks for the fun fact, Einstein," I say, tapping my phone, as Dangerous Woman continues playing.
~
"Mommy, I want a brownie!"
"Ella, sit down. Finish your food first," her mom scolds.
Ella slumps back into her chair, pouting her lip as she stares at the brownies. "But I'm not hungry."
"Then, you don't need any brownies," her mom says.
Ella let's out a groan as she picks up her fork and eats her food. I stare down at my plate, trying my best not to laugh.
She's so cute.
Finally calming myself down, my gaze leaves my plate. My eyes meet green ones, seeming to dance with mischief.
With a smirk on his face, I watch as Nathan slowly tips his cup back and forth. His cup full of grape juice.
Being stupid, my mind was still trying to process what he was planning to do. Too bad it didn't figure out in time.
Suddenly, he pushes the cup towards me, as the purple juice spills over the table. And it drips onto my lap. Oh my. I stare in shock at the purple stains on my jeans.
"Nathan!" His mom scolds. Then, she turns to me, with a concerned look on her face. "I'm sorry, dear."
"I'm fine.." I mumble. I'm not fine. There's grape juice on my jeans. The bitch got juice on my jeans.
She turns back to Nathan. "Help her get clean."
As we left the table, I heard his mom quietly apologizing about Nathan to my mom.
I followed him until he led me to the bathroom door. "Thanks a lot, jerk," I mumble, opening the door. I immediately felt a hand on my back, quickly pushing me inside.
I turn around in time to see Nathan closing the door behind him. "Look, I'm sorry about your jeans, but that was the only thing I could think of," he says.
"What are you talking about?"
"I need you to do me a favor," he replies.
"Um, no thanks. Could you get out now?"
"Could you babysit my sister?"
"..why? I mean, I would love to. But why?"
He sticks his hands in his pockets and shrugs his shoulders. "Chloe is getting really annoying."
I raise an eyebrow. "And I don't care. Get out."
"Opal, please?"
"You're like a child, you know that?"
"Just say 'yes'," he says impatiently.
"Oh god. Fine. Now get out," I say, opening the door behind him and pushing him out.
~
"Bye, guys! Have a good night!" Mrs. Adams calls out behind us, as we make our way across the street. I look over my shoulder and see her standing at the door, waving 'goodbye', with a sleeping Ella in her arms.
"Bye," I call out.
"See tomorrow, Opal! Remember, be here at 5," Mrs. Adams says.
